Welcome

Welcome to the Sexology and Sexuality project. We are a pretty quiet crew, but work together from time to time. I hope that you find an area of interest you care for, and choose to contribute. Also, that after your class is complete that you choose to continue to participate.

May I suggest, perhaps that finding articles in the specific area of the chapters you are studying, and evaluating them from the context that your professor and the book describe them could be useful to you? In our area, sexuality, many articles have comments and opinions based on their understanding, sometimes common understanding, or regional understanding of a topic. But, not as many of these comments are well sourced, cited or referenced as they could be. If you were to choose to focus on the area of current discussion in your class, and then search out and find references supporting statements in the article (or if they are incorrect, correct them and provide a reference) you would be benefiting yourself and Wikipedia at the same time.

Note for instance, in the [[Strap-on dildo{Strap-on]] article, it is lengthy, informative, with many pictures, and it all makes sense, yet there are no references for anything provided.

I find the following as good places to find references.

  • Google books[1]
  • Google scholar[2]
  • Amazon.com[3]
  • Google News Archive Service[4]
  • Google, general search[5]

A general google search is often the least helpful, as a search for "Strap-on" would give you a huge number of references (2,940,000) most of which were pornography pay sites.

While Google Scholar would return 7,320 references, most of which would be academic, and no pornography site. (However, perhaps a number of unrelated used of that term).

To provide a good reference in an article, you give the text, and follow it by using a REF tag.

Note in the sexual objectification article: "However, some feminists and psychologists have argued that this kind of sexual objectification can lead to negative psychological effects include depression, hopelessness, and can give women negative self-images due to the belief that their intellegence and competence is not being adequately acknowledged. [1][2]."

  2. ^ Fredrickson, B.L. "Objectification Theory: Toward understanding women's lived experiences and mental health risks". Psychology of Women Quarterly. 21: 172–206. {{cite journal}}: Unknown parameter |coauthors= ignored (|author= suggested) (help)

Which is provided in this format at the point of reference:

<ref>{{cite book | last=Hewstone | first =Miles | authorlink = | coauthors = Marilynn B. Brewer | title =Self and Social Identity | publisher =Blackwell Publishing Professional | date = 2004-01-01 | location = | pages =167 | url =http://books.google.com/books?vid=ISBN1405110694&id=aGhvm-QH1yEC&pg=RA1-PA136&lpg=RA1-PA136&ots=ai3jNO8_Ks&dq=Fredrickson+and+Roberts&sig=-Ii-Dd49gSgcbZT3O0s4_bzDju8 | doi = | id = ISBN 978-1-4051-1069-3 ISBN 1-4051-1069-4 }}</ref>

See where it is a <ref> tag followed by the {{cite ... }} tag, followed by a closing <ref>.

The various formats of several types of citation tags (depending on the medi) is at Wikipedia:Template_messages/Sources_of_articles#Citations_of_generic_sources Copy the appropriate one within the ref tags, and fill in the blanks. Usually you can look up an ISBN at Amazon.

Good luck to you! Please ask if you need any assistance.
