Broughton is the name of a suburb and new district of the "new city" of Milton Keynes, England near Junction 14 of the M1. Extensive construction of housing has recently taken place in this area. The suburb is named after the historic village (now civil parish) which predates Milton Keynes itself.
Location
The name is Old English and meant village by the brook. In former times, the Northampton to London turnpike came through the village (to join Watling Street (A5) near Woburn). The current main route, the M1 motorway, is very near and Junction 14 is barely half a mile away. The MK Grid Roads H6 and H5 meet at Broughton, at Northfield Roundabout. The V11 Road passes to the West. The section of the old turnpike, once the A50 is now part of the A5130. The route through centre of the old village, named 'London Road', was bypassed in the early 1970s, the newer route running between it and the another MK district, Brook Furlong.
Facilities
The facilities in the area include a charming "Hungry Horse" chain public house and the Milton Keynes Coach Park. It is also within easy walking distance of the Milton Keynes park & ride service, to the shopping centre. The Kingston Shopping Centre, which includes one of the UK's largest Tesco stores, a McDonalds and a Dominos Pizza outlet borders the new estate.
Google Controversy
After a standoff between residents and one of Google's camera cars, residents claimed that Broughton was an affluent area, and that Google's streetview photographs of the village would encourage burglary.[2]
Civil parish
Broughton Parish has a joint parish council with Milton Keynes (Middleton) parish.
Canal Development
The planned new canal between Milton Keynes and Bedford will run through Broughton Brook[3]
