Important issue

A few facts:

1 We have a few hunderd municipalities in this country and all of them have an article on Wikipedia.
2 Bigger towns in this country usually have the same name as their municipality.
3 As a consequence, the city and municipality of Enschede for example share an article. The municipality however also includes towns such as Boekelo. Boekelo and other towns are given an article of their own, while the main city has to share it's article with the municipality, which is non-desirable and may be confusing.
4 It appears whether or not a bigger town has an article of it's own is based entirely on whether the name is the same as the municipality. For example the town of Drachten has it's own article, and so does it's municipality Smallingerland, even though Drachten counts for the majority of the population of the municipality (just like Enschede which shares the article).

I personally believe this is not right. Please have a look at the articles Amsterdam and Government of Amsterdam. You should also have a look at the articles on a random American city and county with the same name: Yakima, Washington and it's county Yakima County, Washington. Maybe we need to follow those examples.

Recently I was involved in a thought-provoking discussion with User:Arnoutf on what to do with the article Leeuwarden. See [1]. It seems to me we have two options: create one article article for a town with the same name as the municipality and two articles for a town with a name different from the municipality's name (Bad idea in my opinion) or make sure cities and municipalities have independent articles and make sure they coexist without redundant information. A big job that is, I know. I have some ideas on how to achieve this goal but first I would like to give you the opportunity to share your thoughts on this matter.

Regards, --Baldrick90 (talk) 22:06, 9 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I would like to amend your statement. Even with large cities/towns there is something stange going on. For example Assen (city) is about 95% of Assen municipality, while Emmen city, although by far the largest town in its municipality, is much smaller than its municipality (see the largest city of Drenthe debate on the Netherlands article). There are many large cities that take up almost all the municipality (like Assen: examples are Amsterdam, Utrecht, Rotterdam, Leeuwarden etc.) however there are also several large towns that extend well beyond the central town (like Emmen: these include Ede and Apeldoorn etc.)
That said, I see some value in your proposal, but I would approach this in a pragmatic way; as the amount of work to do this all in one go is probably staggering. I would start further discussion with a (as far as possible mutually exclusive) list of issues for each of the type of article, to prevernt redundancies. Arnoutf (talk) 22:28, 9 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Your proposal already appears to be carried out over at the Dutch Wikipedia. See for instance nl:Groningen (stad) and nl:Groningen (gemeente), nl:Ameland (gemeente) and nl:Ameland (eiland), nl:Amsterdam (gemeente) and nl:Amsterdam, nl:Apeldoorn (gemeente) and nl:Apeldoorn (stad), nl:Asten (gemeente) and nl:Asten (plaats), nl:Barneveld (gemeente) and nl:Barneveld (dorp), etcetera. I think this is a good way to go forward. AecisBrievenbus 23:29, 9 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Starting more or less from fresh, think about all these additions: (dorp - village), (gemeente - municipality), (plaats - town), etc. It would make sense to agree on one appendix, perhaps (gemeente - municipality) in the vast majority of cases. Only Ameland (eiland - island) looks okay to me, but a redirect to (or perhaps from) Ameland (gemeente - municipality) would standardize this one too. Even though I suppose one or more bots could do a lot of work, it remains a major undertaking. B222 (talk) 07:09, 10 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think it would be necessary to make this distinction. We could keep the town/city/village articles where they are (e.g. Zwolle and Eindhoven) and create municipality articles (e.g. Zwolle (municipality) and Eindhoven (municipality). Disambiguation headers could point the reader from one to the other. I don't think it's necessary to move Zwolle to Zwolle (city) and Eindhoven to Eindhoven (city). How about any of the pictures by Jacob Olie? The self portrait dates back to 1862, the picture of the Oudeschans in Amsterdam dates back to 1863. These are among the oldest pictures of Amsterdam. AecisBrievenbus 16:18, 10 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
How about some of the maps by Blaue commons:Blaeu? Arnoutf (talk) 16:42, 10 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I think the photos of Jacob Olie would pass easily if they were of higher resolution (min. 1000 pixels). Blaeu images (like this one) would pass when they are used in English Wikipedia articles. See for detailed information about all criteria: Wikipedia:Featured picture criteria. – Ilse@ 10:55, 23 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oranje boven

Does anyone know what will happen to "Oranje boven, oranje boven, leve de koningin" when Beatrix abdicates and Willem-Alexander is crowned king? Was there a pre-1890 version of this song? Naming convention for article about a Dutch place

Hello, I am a member of WP:Disambiguation. I came across a red link to village named Halle, in Gelderland. Given that there are several places named Halle, what would be the most preferred name of the article about this Halle? For quite some time, its link from the dismambiguation page (Halle) has been Halle, Netherlands. Today someone changed it to Halle, Kingdom of the Netherlands. Which one is the recommended way for articles such as this one? And, is this place even notable enough to eventually have an article? I will watch this page for answers. Thank you! --Tesscass (talk) 18:57, 11 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I would select Halle, Netherlands as hardly any one will type in "Kingdom of", either editors or readers. Also it would have had the same name before Netherlands was a kingdom. An alternate would be Halle, Gelderland. It certainly is notable enough from my quick internet search. Graeme Bartlett (talk) 22:31, 11 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The notability guidelines don't apply to cities, towns and villages. Or rather, they are by definition notable enough for Wikipedia. Perhaps so little can be said about a specific village that it might be better to incorporate it into another article, but that is another issue. As far as the naming is concerned, since this is the only Halle in the Netherlands, I think Halle, Netherlands is enough, with Halle, Gelderland as a redirect. Newsletter

I think I proposed it earlier, but would having a monthly newsletter help in building this WikiProject? AecisBrievenbus 23:15, 16 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It could improve enthusiasm and focus efforts and make us aware of achievements, however who will write it? Graeme Bartlett (talk) 12:16, 17 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

In a monthly newsletter should be news about this project. What news items were you thinking about? Maybe we can start a Collaboration of the Month on one article at a time? Starting one month in advance the users that are planning to contribute can vote for articles. – Ilse@ 17:52, 1 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello wikiproject members,

User:Guido den Broeder wishes to add information to the Vereniging Basisinkomen page, but since he is the treasurer he has a conflict of interest. I am unable to read the sources that he wishes to use to assert the edit is worth making. Could someone on the wikiproject review please? Draft Guidelines for Lists of companies by country - Feedback Requested

Within WikiProject Companies I am trying to establish guidelines for all Lists of companies by country, the implementation of which would hopefully ensure a minimum quality standard and level of consistency across all of these related but currently disparate articles. The ultimate goal is the improvement of these articles to Featured List status. As a WikiProject that currently has one of these lists within your scope, I would really appreciate your feedback! You can find the draft guidelines here. Thanks for your help as we look to build consensus and improve Wikipedia! - Richc80 (talk) 13:36, 26 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

C- class

Recently an additional class has become available for assessment. The C-class. (see Wikipedia talk:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Assessment).
This class would cover the gap, perceived by many between start class and B class articles.
Addition to projects is voluntary.
What would this mean for us.

  • B-class requirements are becoming stricter; ie more emphasis on accuracy, comprehensiveness, references and style.
  • All current B and start class articles need to be re-evaluated as the C-class will contain several of those. (but we can take out time for that I think as there is no pressing urgency).

So do we want to add this additional level in our project:(Arnoutf (talk) 09:16, 22 June 2008 (UTC))[reply]

Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

  • The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
  • The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
  • A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. This scheme should allow the team to start producing offline selections for your project and the wider community within the next year. Thanks for using the Wikipedia 1.0 scheme! Wikipedia 0.7 articles have been selected for Netherlands

Wikipedia 0.7 is a collection of English Wikipedia articles due to be released on DVD, and available for free download, later this year. The Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team has made an automated selection of articles for Version 0.7.

We would like to ask you to review the articles selected from this project. These were chosen from the articles with this project's talk page tag, based on the rated importance and quality. If there are any specific articles that should be removed, please let us know at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.7. You can also nominate additional articles for release, following the procedure at Wikipedia:Release Version Nominations.

A list of selected articles with cleanup tags, sorted by project, is available. The list is automatically updated each hour when it is loaded. Please try to fix any urgent problems in the selected articles. A team of copyeditors has agreed to help with copyediting requests, although you should try to fix simple issues on your own if possible.

We would also appreciate your help in identifying the version of each article that you think we should use, to help avoid vandalism or POV issues. These versions can be recorded at this project's subpage of User:SelectionBot/0.7. We are planning to release the selection for the holiday season, so we ask you to select the revisions before October 20. At that time, we will use an automatic process to identify which version of each article to release, if no version has been manually selected. Thanks! Image needs replacement

Hello all...

An image used in the Amersfoort article, specifically Image:Amersfoortse Kei.jpg, has a little bit of a licensing issue. The image was uploaded back when the rules around image uploading were less restrictive. It is presumed that the uploader was willing to license the picture under the GFDL license but was not clear in that regard. As such, the image, while not at risk of deletion, is likely not clearly licensed to allow for free use in any future use of this article. If anyone has an image that can replace this, or can go take one and upload it, it would be best.

Priority articles within this project's scope

Wikipedia:Core topics - 1,000

Wikipedia:Vital_articles/Expanded

m:List of articles every Wikipedia should have

Ilse@ 13:29, 2 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

replaced Redlinked Dutch Masters with Dutch Golden Age painting)

I think this is a good way for our improvement drive. However we have to come to deal with the (by now) multiple priority lists.
In my view the expanded Vital Article list is not very reliable (look e.g, at the Olympics section that features about 90% US athletes), nor stable. It is currently undergoing non-reviewed rapid expansion from about 2,000 to its newly formed aim of 10,000. So I would be very hesitant to take that list as guiding. I think the 1000 article Wikipedia:Vital articles is more essential (and it does not fully copy Core topics.....). Arnoutf (talk) 15:05, 2 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps we should add a qualifier to the template. I will have to think about that. Arnoutf (talk) 15:06, 2 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
None of the articles on the expanded list are among the 1,000 vital articles, so in my opinion Wikipedia:Vital articles is not very useful for this particular project. Perhaps a realistic subgoal for the articles above is improving them to B-class quality. – Ilse@ 15:21, 2 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yup you are right. Yet the expanded list is not very satisficing to me as it is not (yet) well monitored and with a quick reading seems to present an American view of the world (both Gouda and Edam cheese but not Amsterdam, Polders or the Rhine rivers (which are in the 3rd list you quote).
Nevertheless I think these kind of priorities should be a standing improvement drive motivation. My approach would be to take the "Core-topic and List of articles every Wikipedia should have" articles and focus on these first. (also because they are the fewest) Arnoutf (talk) 16:20, 2 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I think that one article per month (Collaboration of the month) with a set goal (e.g. from C-class to B-class) is more useful than the current Article Improvement Drive with one article of each assessment class. If others agree, we should change the inactive Template:WPNetherlands Improvement. – Ilse@ 17:33, 2 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Agree, seemed like a good idea at the time but is not working in practice. I think we should use the table above as priority list for improvement candidates. Arnoutf (talk) 19:35, 2 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

New Netherland

Recently I done alot of work on New Netherland, which is considered to be in the scope of the Netherlands project. Random and unwieldy, I believe it is begnning to take form, be better referenced, and cover the scope of story the provinical colony. There's more to do, but could use some tips as where to go, plus some general copyedting and clean-up. ThanksDjflem (talk) 10:31, 9 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The area of Oost Gelre

Anyone who knows the correct area of Oost Gelre? The Dutch and English versions of Wikipedia say it's 83.34 km², the German version says 110,19 km². According to www.oostgelre.nl ([2]) the German version seems to be right Inteloutside2 (talk) 13:24, 4 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sourcing of Dutch chart positions in the Sweet discography

I struggle with finding a source for the Dutch chart position for the British 1970's glam-rock band Sweet. The usual resource http://www.dutchcharts.nl/ apparently does not have data that old. Maybe somebody from this project can help? Please reply over at Talk:Sweet discography#Source for Dutch chart positions. Thanks in advance for any help. – IbLeo (talk) 12:49, 5 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
