The Amsterdam Marathon is an annual marathon race over the classic distance of 42.195km held in Amsterdam, the Netherlands since 1975. It has taken place in October since the 24th edition in 1999, and has attracted many top athletes from around the world since the late 1990s, when the organizers chose a new, flatter course. It is one of the top ten marathons in the world.[1] The event is the second largest marathon in the Netherlands, after the Rotterdam Marathon.

History

A camera motorcycle is filming Haile Gebrselassie during his winning race in 2005.

The first marathon in Amsterdam was held on August 5, 1928, during the 1928 Summer Olympics. It was won by Boughera El Ouafi in 2:32:57.[2]

After the Olympics there were no marathons in Amsterdam until 1975. Since that year the marathon was held annually, with the exception of 1978.[2]

In 2005, Haile Gebrselassie finished in 2:06:20, which is the best time ever in Amsterdam.[2]

Route

The route starts and finishes in the Olympic Stadium. The course is flat, with a maximum elevation of 33ft at the 23rd mile.[3]
