Old talk at /Archive1, /Archive2

You asked a very good question. Unfortunately, I don't have an easy answer and haven't had the time to really investigate it. (And probably won't have time for several weeks at least.) If no one beats me to it, I'll try to look into it when I get back. Sorry I can't be more help in the short term. Rossami (talk) 19:02, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)

You moved this to List of ages of Roman Catholic popes since 1500. That is a mouthful. The cut off date of 1500 will change when more data is added to the list (as has happened in the past). Also, the other lists involving popes do not include the extra phrase "Roman Catholic", and note that the Pope article is not a disambiguation page precisely because the Roman Catholic usage of the term is so dominant. These two aspects make the name extra long for no apparently good reason. Please tell me your policy reason for this move and why such a long name. Also do you plan to fix all the links to this article? Thanks. NoSeptember 19:58, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I would suggest dropping "Roman Catholic" since it is inconsistent with common practice of all the pope related lists and articles. I'd drop "since 1500" for now too. If someone later creates more related lists and they need to be distinguished from each other, that would be the time to add such a detail to the title. I am unaware of anyone with current plans to do so. Note that List of popes is very long covering 2000 years and I am unaware of anyone suggesting breaking into several articles. Ages of Popes has less information per pope and would be much shorter even if it extended to 2000 years. List of ages of popes seems adequate to me if you insist on identifying this article as a list. NoSeptember 20:21, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for the fix. Later, I'll go back and fix the links to avoid the redirects. NoSeptember 20:38, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I don't know what else to do with this list to make it worthy as a FLC. In fact, right now I'd probably just delete the "youngest popes" section and nothing more. NoSeptember 20:52, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Transwiki team

Hi there! Thanks for the invite, but I'm afraid I'm far too busy to start moving articles to Wiktionary. I'd be happy to do a bunch of tagging, though. Yours, Radiant_>|< 10:14, Jun 24, 2005 (UTC)

  • By the way, your feedback is appreciated on Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion/Proposal. Yours, Radiant_>|< 10:34, Jun 24, 2005 (UTC)
    • And to answer your question, the link on WP:TFD should explain that policy. It doesn't presently have speedies, except for patent nonsense and the usual stuff. Radiant_>|< 23:27, Jun 24, 2005 (UTC)
      • Wikipedia:Templates for deletion/Instructions. Please edit the header of WP:TFD to make this clearer, if you think it necessary. Radiant_>|< 23:50, Jun 24, 2005 (UTC)
        • No, it's policy alright. That subpage was created recently because the TFD header was overly long. But it's been in use in precisely this way for a long time (not to mention being roughly similar to VFD and CFD policy). Radiant_>|< 10:26, Jun 25, 2005 (UTC)

Spangineer article

Wow! Looks like I coined a new term... or maybe I'm not as creative as I like to think I am. If I am the originator, the author of the article got it wrong – "spangineer" is defined as "an engineer that speaks Spanish", not "an engineer from Spain". But hey, what can you expect from a vandal =). Thanks for pointing it out to me. --Spangineer (háblame) 10:53, Jun 24, 2005 (UTC)

Nonsense, eh? That hurts =). Still though, how many people get an article on their user name? As for the admin thing, I don't think I've made any major flub ups, and you were involved in the most heated discussion I've ever been in (over the featured lists with Michael Hardy and others). I've done a fair amount of systematic editing - stub sorting, fixing disambig pages, adding stock ticker symbols to companies, welcoming noobies, participating in the Wikisyntax project, etc., so my edit count is a bit inflated. I wouldn't think that would be a problem, since I've done lots of other stuff too. So, I guess, yeah I would accept. Thanks alot for nominating me! I'll check back later today or tomorrow to answer the questions on the nomination page. --Spangineer (háblame) 13:55, Jun 25, 2005 (UTC)

speaking of spang...

Thanks (belatedly) for supporting my RFA nearly a month ago. Unfortunately a sad event occurred at that time in my family, and I have not been able to participate in Wikipedia as much as I would like. I hope to get back to active contribution soon. Thanks again! FreplySpang (talk) 01:49, 25 Jun 2005 (UTC)

For God's sake! The amount of vandalism you're getting is astonishing. Everyking 02:43, 26 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Holy crap?! Before today my user page had only ever been vandalized once. I'm not a confrontational person at all, I swear! I have a feeling (actually I'm sure) this is a reincarnation of the User:Richardr443 vandal. Just look at all those reverts by kindly RCers... --Dmcdevit 03:54, 26 Jun 2005 (UTC)

New data available

Hello, I wrote a custom program to provide the data similar to what was available before. I left a message on the project talk page but for quick reference the link is Wikipedia talk:Most wanted stubs/20050623-triddle. Thanks for letting me know how I could help you, that was a very fun challenge. Triddle 06:45, Jun 26, 2005 (UTC)

Hi again, I tried to clean it up but I was not able to do much. I put a new list of 250 in there, minus the Puerto Rico articles and another set of articles that looked like it was of similar nature. Triddle 21:50, Jun 26, 2005 (UTC)

I expanded the intro a little - I was wondering what else you think an intro should include. Thanks. Guettarda 16:40, 26 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Vote for me for admin

Please vote for me as an admin. Wikipedia:Requests_for_adminship/Woohookitty is the vote. Thanks. --Woohookitty 29 June 2005 03:51 (UTC)

Don't worry. I asked all of 3 people. :) --Woohookitty 29 June 2005 04:29 (UTC)
I'm sorry to hear that Richard is giving you trouble. Isn't he amazing? I don't get people like that. And it's not like this was a borderline case in terms of that article he fought so hard for. Well hopefully he'll leave me alone, but thanks for the heads up. I was actually a bit afraid that he was going to try to sabotage my admin candidacy, which is why I've held off on that for awhile. --Woohookitty 30 June 2005 01:33 (UTC)

The Scarlet Letter

Haha. I thought about sending you a note about that, just in case it might influence your comments in my RfA nom =). Dull and boring? Phew, I don't think so. I mean, it's no action thriller, but the depth of that book is incredible—the only book I've read that portrays the pain of guilt better is Crime and Punishment. And the reminder for me as a Christian against legalism/judging others is helpful as well. I agree with you, Dickens is great too; A Tale of Two Cities and Oliver Twist are right up there in my favorite books list. Walden for me was a bit unrealistic... I've heard that Thoreau regularly went home to do his laundry and stuff, for example. That kind of destroys the "experience nature/simple living" theme for me. And it doesn't help that I don't agree with most of his conclusions. But that's politics, and I try to avoid those getting into those on wikipedia =). --Spangineer (háblame) June 29, 2005 21:03 (UTC)

Nope, I haven't read The Pickwick Papers, so I'll have to add that to the ever growing list of books I have to read. Now that I think about it, I'm not sure that I've read Huck Finn in its entirety... the problem is that when I was younger I read a ton of very abridged versions of classic books, so I know how all the stories go, but that makes it difficult to remember if I ever read the real thing. I should read it again, in any case, and then The Scarlet Letter, and compare =). I'll admit, it's been a few years since I read The Scarlet Letter, so maybe my view of the book is somewhat romanticized. Sounds like I should quit Wikipedia for awhile so I have more time to read! And here you are, giving me even more responsibilities with this admin thing ;). --Spangineer (háblame) June 30, 2005 15:35 (UTC)

McBot

Someone just threw the big Decapitalization switch at Wiktionary. All of a sudden, lots of articles are at the wrong title, and at the very least need redirects. The skills of the 'bot writers are probably needed. Uncle G June 29, 2005 21:56 (UTC)

Re:History of Greece Opening

  • The first section was somewhat confusing, and I assumed that it was the main reason why the article was chosen for Collaboration of the Week. It'd probably be easier to create an entirely new lead section than salvage the old lead section from what it looked like.

If you'd like to revert, no hard feelings here. My goal's to help out, and i'm fairly new apparently in the grand scheme of the editing strata. --Karmafist 30 June 2005 17:31 (UTC)

  • I understand. I'll write it or someone else will eventually, every little bit helps. Just ask a sculptor, sometimes subtraction can be addition.

Transwikilog

Hello, I'm interested. Can you send me the URLS to the bot you use and where the data comes from? I'll take a look and see if there is anything I can do. Triddle July 2, 2005 16:59 (UTC)

Actually I'm going to help you out as the first case for my new WikiProject. Please add your response (for right now) to Wikipedia:WikiProject_help_desk#Open_projects. Triddle July 2, 2005 17:48 (UTC)

Surnames

Some Wiktionarians want to delete surnames from Wiktionary. I'm opposing, on the grounds that this is a long-standing arrangement between Wiktionary and Wikipedia, where Wiktionary handles the lexicography and Wikipedia handles the people and places. Please come to Wiktionary:Wiktionary:Requests for deletion#Surnames and contribute to the discussion. Uncle G 2005-07-03 13:44:28 (UTC)

My RfA

Well, it's official. Thanks for the nomination; I'll do my best to be responsible with my new powers. Oh, and by the way, so far I'm loving Huck Finn. Maybe before long we'll be in a bit more agreement over which is the best U.S. book ever =). See you around! --Spangineer (háblame) July 4, 2005 03:45 (UTC)

VFD/PC

Hi there! Yes, it's intended as guideline (as you say, that's the whole point), and was already in Category:Wikipedia guidelines. I've added the {{guideline}} to clarify this. Regarding transwikiing, I'll chip in whenever I have time. I'm afraid that's erratic at best. How about asking for help on the VP? Yours, Radiant_>|< July 4, 2005 11:46 (UTC)

image loading problems

Hi - Another issue that occasionally shows up is general slowness. If a page has lots of images and the site is really slow, the image loads can time out and the browser ends up displaying a generic "broken image" image. Perhaps perversely, clearing your browser's cache can sometimes cause this problem. -- Rick Block (talk) July 4, 2005 20:04 (UTC)

Dragon's Flight pointed out a serious omission to this proposal: that the image description page of WikiCommons should include the content of the one on Wikipedia. I have reworded the proposal to include that. Because the wording changed, I have hidden your vote; please read the new version and reinstate your vote if you still support (or move it to oppose, or delete it, as you see fit). Deletion after transwiki

It is just like having your own personal genie

Just point me at 'em and I will do the deletions for you. —Theo (Talk) 5 July 2005 11:03 (UTC)

I had rather hoped to say "Conlon gon" but the joke is ruined by my decision to expand Conlon rather than delete it. Once an article is transwikied you can just flag it for speedy deletion if you think that appropriate. I go to that category fairly frequently. Just as I try to transwiki something every day. —Theo (Talk) 5 July 2005 20:06 (UTC)

As far as I could see all those images remain copyright until 2027. They are now deleted. I suspect that the text may also be copyright, but I cannot be sure. —Theo (Talk) 5 July 2005 21:59 (UTC)

Wikisweet

Sorry for having fallen off the face of the earth. I will try to get a new WikiSweet to you in a few days. Kevin Rector (talk) July 7, 2005 04:17 (UTC)

One other thing, you might want to ask around on Wiktionary, they might not even want the Wikipedia articles, the list seems to mostly just be piling up. If they don't want the articles then that would save you a lot of work. Kevin Rector (talk) July 7, 2005 04:19 (UTC)

Regarding Image:Peacock.jpg, I added a public release, thanks. --MPerel ( talk | contrib) 7 July 2005 16:39 (UTC)

Community portal

The link I inserted is not controversial. It is a voluntary community association-- just like everything else listed under that section. You are free to join or not to join. You are free to set up and join an association representing Wikipedians of other affiliations. Please restore the link. Cognition 9 July 2005 08:34 (UTC)

On a technical note, I did not violate the 3RR since the forth edit was an attempted compromise, not a revert. Anyhow, I dispute the notion that it is controversial. By virtue of the fact that similar voluntary community associations are listed in that very section, the listing of drug free Wikipedias is firmly within the established precedent on that page. Good night to you too.Cognition 9 July 2005 08:56 (UTC)

I added the links to the VfD; glad I can help. By the way, this is exactly the kind of thing I created the WikiProject_help_desk for. Would you be willing to give me a hand on that? I am curious if the page I have created adequately explains what the project is for. This is the test: If you look at that page do you feel like it tells you to submit a problem such as this one? If not can you think of some better language? Thanks and again I'm glad I could help. Triddle 21:52, July 9, 2005 (UTC)

Some articles you transwikied and put up for vfd

This concerns Chickenshit, Cardinal Symptom, Counterpane and Commercial off-the-shelf. Per the vfd votes, Chickenshit has been redirected to Chicken, Cardinal Symptom to symptom and counterpane to bed sheet. Commercial off the shelf was deleted. I don't know how you want to reflect all of this on the transwiki page. I'm leaving it up to you. --Woohookitty 08:24, 12 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia:Deletion policy/Teletraffic Engineering

Thanks for the heads up. I was unaware that this had happened, but it is very wrong. The 'policy consensus' discussions are not a centralized vote to delete a lot of articles - rather, they are a discussion forum that has, on several occasions, been able to set a guideline for VFD. None of the pages you mention were ever seriously nominated for deletion (whatlinkshere shows no daily archive) - although judging by the quality, they could benefit from some serious cleaning up. My advice would be to remove all those tags. I believe in the central discussion, some people indicated they wanted to read through all of it and clean it up, they may be willing to help. Yours, Radiant_>|< 06:59, July 13, 2005 (UTC)

Thank you

The support is always welcome, no matter how cheap it is. :) I'm ignoring the undelete vote on Nudity in the Simpsons. If it passes, it passes. Not much I can do about it now. And I'm trying not to take it personally. --Woohookitty 08:53, 13 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

And thanks again. :) I've done that a couple of times now. I need to find a way to mark off the ones I've deleted. --Woohookitty 09:05, 14 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it's just added to the right hand side. When you become an admin, they add protect this page and delete this page. When you click on delete, another thing comes up asking for a comment on the deletion. I like to copy in the vfd vote, so it's a bit easier for me to do one at a time. --Woohookitty 21:06, 14 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
No no, that's quite alright. My favorite deletes so far were on a BOWLING ALLEY in St Louis Missouri along with 4 articles on the top bowlers at that alley. Yeah. :-D --Woohookitty 21:12, 14 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia Attribution

Venkatesh changed the article you spotted by hand, but I figured, why not change the template we already were using to add the text you suggested? See the BrickWiki History of LEGO page now. Please advise if that's not a good approach (the attribution at the TOP seems goodness to me). And thanks for your help on the category redirection question... ++Lar 21:11, 14 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Saw your change to the template away from PAGENAMEE, gotta think about that... setting parms may be beyond our (few and not versed in Wiki ways) users at this point, if we find ones where the page name isn't the same as BrickWiki's maybe we fix by hand for now? Dunno. Is there a way to use {{1}} if it exists and {{PAGENAMEE}} if it doesn't? Conditional logic, that is? ++Lar 21:56, 14 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Decided to go with the parm as you had it, we aren't going to copy a lot of pages and we'll make it work. Thanks for the improvements! ++Lar 23:47, 14 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

IFD again

Please be more careful when listing images at WP:IFD. For example, on July 6 you listed Image:Peaches and Bongo1.jpg, saying that it has no source. It has a source clearly indicated. Also, you failed to tag the actual image with {{ifd}}, and you did not notify the author. dbenbenn | talk 15:41, 15 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Whoops! I guess I didn't look to closely beyond seeing no copyright tag (which was added later). But there is no excuse for that and not tagging and all. I'll make sure it doesn't happen again. Incidentally, I wonder if I could ask you a question about image deletion. If I were to list that image again, its only crime being that it is an orphan, could it be deleted on those grounds only? I can't remember seeing many like that listed. --Dmcdevit·t 20:08, July 15, 2005 (UTC)
