Why can't this be added to the article? It puts the Stern show in context of american radio at the time. All it means is that Howard was inspired by someone else. Is that a problem? Howard certainly took the concept much farther than anyone else. Unless Lil Dice really believes that Howard "invented talk radio" when he was 5 years old. (As Howard states in Private Parts.) |

First child's birth date
Q&A |
---|
In the movie version of Private Parts, Howard's first child is born on July 27, 1985. In the article her birth year is listed as 1983. Which is correct?
Blue Oyster Cult link
Just thought this should be here, Howard is apparently related to Eric Bloom (lead singer of Blue Oyster Cult somehow and also provided a voice on their album Club Ninja. The track "When The War Comes" is the track that features his voice at the beginning. He is not credited in the album, but I was told by Eric Bloom that this is true.
- I've never heard this you'll have to find a real source (newspaper article, etc.) if you want to add it to the Article here. 14:20, 1 May 2007 (UTC)
Follow the link to Club Ninja on Wikipedia. This has no documentation besides that both Bloom and Stern claim it. Also: http://www.1celebritysearch.com/celebs/howard_stern.htm http://us.imdb.com/name/nm0001769/bio http://www.amazon.com/Club-Ninja-Blue-Oyster-Cult/dp/B000001SMX http://www.artistdirect.com/nad/store/artist/album/0,,54316,00.html http://www.music.com/release/club_ninja/1/ Yea, he definately did the voice. Unsure about the relation, though, and how exactly they would be related if it's true.

I wrote Sirius publicity and they never sent me an official headshot with permission for use, unfortunately. We really should try to get permission to use and a nice hi-res publicity shot though. Maybe someone should e-mail Fred, he respects wikipedia! LilDice 02:19, 25 July 2006 (UTC)
- I'm not sure what Fred's email is, but maybe someone can ask Mutt on SternFanNetwork. --Bark 19:36, 17 August 2006 (UTC)
- I dont have an account at SFN, but if someone with a connection over there can just get someone at Sirius to e-mail one of us an official publicity photo with copyright info and permission to use that would rock the current one is a really bad photo. LilDice 19:46, 17 August 2006 (UTC)
- Replaced with newer screen grab from HSOD. The old image was very old. LilDice 01:20, 29 August 2006 (UTC)
- I realize the quality isn't great. But it is more recent than the previous one, so please stop the reverting. LilDice 16:35, 5 September 2006 (UTC)
- If Howard doesn't like this picture then Howard can get one of his boys to upload a recent picture with a clear view of his face, and we'll use that one instead. --Bark 19:45, 14 September 2006 (UTC)
- Howard should like this one, I think. --Bark 22:29, 14 September 2006 (UTC)

- Has anyone tried the webmaster or Jason? Their addresses are at the bottom of the the rundown pages Would it be useful if several of us try to e-mail the show in the hopes that at least one of us will get a response? Also do we want to put a no free content image in the spot?[BLP_default_photo.svg](Optigan13 05:38, 13 February 2007 (UTC))
- sorry can we take that free image thing off? it kind of looks strange on an encyclopedia article68.193.87.97 02:22, 28 February 2007 (UTC)
- It looks a bit funny but it serves a purpose. If that thing gets more people to try and find a usable picture, then it's great, but if no one feels it will does us any good than by all means take it down. A flickr search for a creative commons licensed picture turns up nothing useful, but there are some good howard stern ones on there, just not cc licensed. We could contact the individuals to see if they would be willing to license one. (Optigan13 06:58, 28 February 2007 (UTC))
- Just mentioning it again since I just reverted a removal of the replace this image. It looks odd but it serves a purpose. This image problem goes back over a year now, with still no luck, so I am all for anything that draws attention to the problem. Also I somehow came across this image [1] in one of my searches. It is from lukeisback which has a special [setup]. The only problem to me is that this looks like a publicity photo, and not just one of his usual porn star pictures. - I uploaded an image that would work for this article and is copyright free. The upload title is Howard_Stern_Rally.JPG. It won't let me edit it into the article --Dizzygillespi 16:24, 3 September 2007 (UTC)

Page organization
After re-organizing the placement of some of the page contents, I just want to express my hope that you find it an improvement. My first reading of the article left me dissatisfied with having two personal-life paragraphs in two places within the Terrestrial radio career section, and then I realized that those paragraphs were also embedded among other paragraphs that were not specifically about Stern's radio career. In that edit, I moved text intact, without changing any of it--except to avoid duplication on the subject of Stern's engagement, because the engagement had already been mentioned in the Personal life section.
Other changes that I'd like to see, but will leave for another time--or for other people, whichever comes first--include: elimination of duplicate wikilinks within the article (e.g. the year 2006 and the name Beth Ostrosky); and removal of one sentence about Ostrosky ("Ostrosky frequently appears in the men's magazine FHM, and hosts Filter on the G4 network"), because she has already been identified sufficiently and that kind of detail is best kept current in the separate article about her. --Rich Janis 02:29, 18 March 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks! I appreciate it. LilDice 03:26, 18 March 2007 (UTC)
External Links
I'm not sure where some eds are coming from completely trimming the fan site section, the 2 fan sites listed are quite relevant. One gives extensive transcripts from the show and the other is the quasi-official message board for the Stern show, certainly well within WP:EL. LilDice 23:59, 3 April 2007 (UTC)
- I concur these links are highly relevant. Mvemkr 00:07, 4 April 2007 (UTC)
- When does the 3RR take effect? Mvemkr 01:54, 4 April 2007 (UTC)
- The marksfriggin should be the only fansite listed as it provides show rundowns (though so does howardstern.com, so maybe marksfriggin is not needed). Sternfannetwork or any other bulletin board most definitely does not meet the criteria for external links. WP:EL and WP:NOT#LINK are pretty clear on this (See WP:EL, Links normally to be avoided, #10). —Ocatecir Talk 04:30, 4 April 2007 (UTC)
- marksfriggin offers unbiased transcripts and a longer archive. The guy who writes marksfriggin actually quit doing it on an official basis because he refused to be censored, so it's definitely relevant. Now as far as sternfannetwork, it does contain some encyclopedic content such as a photo gallery and is the defacto 'official' forums/fansite since the owner of the site is employed by the Stern radio stations on Sirius and hosts a show. Most articles contain a link to at least one fan-site, the only reason this was even up for debate was that a vandal from a rival forum has been here trying to remove it. Birthplace
Template:QAWasn't Howard born in Roosevelt, Long Island, New York, and not New York City, New York? I'm unable to edit the page
- Kind of. I think he was born in Queens and grew up in Roosevelt Island. But anyway, Roosevelt Island is in Long Island, which is part of New York City. NYC is more than just Manhattan, it includes five boroughs. Same with Queens. --Bill.matthews 23:57, 10 April 2007 (UTC)
PARTS of Long Island are part of New York City. Queens County (the borough of Queens) and Kings County (the borough of Brooklyn) are both on Long Island and part of NYC. However, Nassau and Suffolk counties are on Long Island but completely separate from the city. Roosevelt is in Nassau County. Nevertheless, Stern was born in Jackson Heights, a neighborhood in Queens, so it would be accurate to say he was BORN in New York City; just not that he was raised there. NYCityRat 06:25, 11 May 2007 (UTC)
- Bill is confusing Roosevelt Island, which is a small island in New York City (it lies between Queens and Manhattan, crossed by the Queensboro Bridge), with Roosevelt, a town on Long Island. Howard grew up in the latter. CitiCat 02:18, 14 June 2007 (UTC)
Firing by WWDC
Seems very odd if not suspicious that the incident with Air Florida Flight 90 and his firing only a few months later are not mentioned in the article. RoyBatty42 18:46, 11 April 2007 (UTC)
- Suspicious? I'm not aware of any connection between the two, if you can find something that references that then go ahead and add it, but I don't think there are any sinister motives. LilDice 19:11, 11 April 2007 (UTC)
- I just checked out the article for The Howard Stern Show and they do mention the Air Florida incident there. This article is a biography rather than about show specific incidents. LilDice 19:14, 11 April 2007 (UTC)

Political Views?
It seems from the recent statement on the air he is more of a liberal Republican. He actually admitted to watching O'Relly factor. Lorus77 22:41, 23 May 2007 (UTC)
- Um, he votes both ways. If you want to include something definitive you need to find a source, not assume someone's republican because they watch fox news. Lil' Dice (yeah, I said it!) - talk 02:47, 24 May 2007 (UTC)
- Nothing sourced, but at least once I heard him say that he sometimes listens to conservative radio and "sometimes actaully agrees with them." Also, he has been a guest on Fox News. Nothing to put in the article, but I thought it would interesting to bring up here.Lorus77 00:35, 26 May 2007 (UTC)
- He watches Fox News occasionally, but he also reads the New York times every day, watches "Real Time with Bill Maher" and reads Mahers books, despite Maher being a complete prick to him, in addition to occasionally listening to Sirius Left.Compare the candidates Howards supported in this millenium - Republicans - Rick Lazio (2000), George Pataki (2002), and Arnold (2003) Democrats - Al Gore (2000), Every Democrat running for Federal office including John Kerry (2004), Every Democrat running for Federal office including Ned Lamont (2006), Elliot Spitzer (2006). For 2008 Howards been completely Schizo about who he wants. The day after he declared his ideal candidate basically meeting every major definition of a liberal/progressive who opposes keeping troops in Iraq he said he supported Giuliani. Before and after that he's praised Hillary Clinton (not in any kind of way indicating he'd want her for a fall guy against Giuliani, but genuine interest in thinking she'd be a good president). Anyway his major political agendas over the last several years continue to be decidedly left of center, supporting Gay marriage, a womans right to chose, increased environmental regulations, and the immediate withdrawel of troops in Iraq. The only reason he doesn't feel the way most people who support those things feel about Giuliani is his personal relationship with Rudy. Howard is no "liberal Republican". - Note, an anon user left 2 remarks that have since been removed, the remarks can been seen in the edit history or by clicking here or here. As for my thought on this subject, he for a long time, even out side of the govonors race, identified him self as being a liberterian, but even at that not all of his views, those at the time, would be lock step with that of the liberterian cause. The fox news thing is basicaly a non issue, as i peronaly know plenty of people who are hardly conservatives that watch fox news and their talking heads. Howard has, in my opinion, moved more to the left since baisicaly the rise of the religious-right/neo-cons in the leadership of the republican party, say late 90's on, but i still would be hard press to put in into the say liberal fold as a Franken. --Boothy443 | trácht ar 00:19, 29 May 2007 (UTC)
Too many internal links
I propose to trim down some of the superfluous internal links in this article, in accordance with WP:CONTEXT and WP:BTW which basically state that words not every word needs to be linked. Any objections?--M. Frederick 16:15, 13 June 2007 (UTC)
- Just don't pull any citations/footnotes. If it feels a little heavy on internal links trim them, I've stared at this article enough times that they blend in. The only ones I could see as being redundant are the radios stations he worked at and the cities they were in, which does seem a little redundant. The station links alone would be fine. Optigan13 04:10, 14 June 2007 (UTC)
- I won't mess with any footnotes; those are well-placed. I was just thinking words like divorced, publishing, gun, moron, scholarship, racial, or white need not be linked. These articles are not relevant to helping readers understand Stern, and often their links discuss these words in a different context than that which is used in the Stern article.--M. Frederick 12:43, 14 June 2007 (UTC)
- Go ahead that seems fine. I was just saying any over-linking wasn't jumping out at me. Optigan13 00:43, 15 June 2007 (UTC)
- Oh, and while your at it please take a look at the see also links to review if they should be changed.Optigan13 00:37, 17 June 2007 (UTC)

Sexism
I never listened to Howard Stern until a couple weeks ago, and what got me interested is my family and some of my friends have said on many occasions that Stern is this sort of extreme sexist, misogynist, chauvinist, jerk, and I just wanted to see if they were just being uptight or if he really is this guy who truly thinks of women as objects and only exist for sex and masturbation. I've also seen this sort of description of him in parodies on MadTV and the like. I haven't listened to any new shows (only early, 90s stuff on the net), but so far I haven't heard anything that would be considered sexist or misogynistic. Is this just a completely false (or exaggerated) stereotype of Stern? Or am I just not catching the right shows?--71.158.216.141 05:22, 19 June 2007 (UTC)

I uploaded them but I wasn't sure if the fair use rationale would hold, and was going to ask the next time this article goes to peer review if they were valid.Optigan13 03:06, 25 June 2007 (UTC)
Howard Sterns Half Italian Claim
Template:QAWhy is the fact that Howard Stern always claimed to be half Italian and speak Yiddish on air keeps on getting deleted and marked as vandlism? Here are some proofs: http://www.howardshrine.com/2005/12/howard-stern-interview-in-steppin-out.html http://www.amiannoying.com/(S(5pxaw055sev334e3ymaah245))/view.aspx?ID=300 http://www.faqs.org/faqs/howard-stern/faq/ and from his official site: http://www.howardstern.com/rundown.hs?d=1141189200 http://www.celebopedia.com/howard-stern/
Can an Admin please edit the page or revert the original version containing the following please.
Although both his parents are Jewish, Stern has long claimed on his show to be half Jewish. (the other half being Italian). This claim is apparently a running gag, as Stern sometimes mutters Yiddish phrases on the air which he claims to be Italian phrases. Stern's Hebrew name is Tzvi; his paternal grandparents, Froim and Anna (Gallar) Stern and maternal grandparents, Sol and Esther (Reich) Schiffman,[1] were Austro-Hungarian Jews who immigrated to America at about the same time.

Poor Marketing of Private Parts Movie
I've spoken with many admirers of Howard Stern's Private Parts film, regarding it as an excellent story with a suprisingly strong performance from Stern himself but stating that the marketing and advertising warded potential viewers away. The front cover of the DVD gives the impression of watching a pornography parody, tacky adult film or lude blue-comedy story when in actual fact it was not. Most people in the UK have not heard his radio station and the general consensus is that the marketing of the film undermined the quality of the story. It might be worth noting this, if relevant figures or qualified citations can support it. Bobbyfletch85 14:22, 5 July 2007 (UTC)
- Poor distribution and marketing is probably better suited for the film's article, but as you said it needs citations to be added. Having an alternate cover is already mentioned in that article. More important would be to note his popularity outside of North America. Optigan13 06:13, 9 July 2007 (UTC)
TV Shows Section
There's barely any discussion of the different TV shows. The TV shows should get a section after the different radio sections, and before the "Other Media" section (which doesn't talk about the TV shows).—The preceding unsigned comment was added by 147.9.157.153 (talk • contribs).
IPA(pronunciation) tag
I put the pronunciation on the article since I'm not certain if I know how to pronounce Howard's Hebrew name of Tzvi correctly, and I don't think I'm the only one. If i'm mis-using the tag, or there is some other reason to remove the tag, please explain why. Optigan13 04:33, 1 August 2007 (UTC)
- That's not really what the tag is for, no. It's for if an article says something like "...Tzvi (pronounced 'tsvee')", without using the IPA (which the Wikipedia manual of style dictates should be used). For the record, "Tzvi" in Hebrew is [ʦvi] ("tsvee"), if you wish to add it to the article. --Miskwito 00:49, 2 September 2007 (UTC)
Single source biographies
Seems to me that the sources for this article are all amazingly one sided. Which is the main problem with wikipedia, as most people see it. The "author" should do real research, instead of relying on the subject himself for all the documentation. There are several factual mistakes in this article, all due to single source information.71.81.91.225 13:26, 17 October 2007 (UTC)
- If you see anything you feel is inaccurate feel free to place the {{Dubious}}. It is easy to complain about problems, it is much more difficult to correct them. - Optigan13 05:38, 18 October 2007 (UTC)
Sorry... when I've tried to "correct" things, Lil Dice freaks out and removes them. Lil Dice has actually said that the only place to find the "true" is in Howard's books. The story of American Radio going back and forth between "content" and "personality" focus, and Howard's legitimate place as a trendsetter during the latest "personality" epoch is really quite facsinating, and it's a lot more complicated and richly detailed than this article would indicate. It would be nice to have an actual academic, or someone working in the radio industry construct the Howard Page, rather than an obsessed fan. But, c'est la vie... it's only Wikipedia. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.81.91.225 (talk) 00:20, 14 November 2007 (UTC)
- Sorry to be so snarky there but when you put up a comment that looks basically like a this article sucks, Wikipedia sucks kind of general snipe that people put up it isn't really helpful. We're aware of the problems of Wikipedia a lot of it is still a work in progress, some of it just plain crap. Also when the only contributions from the IP you are on appear to be comments on this talk page, it is tough to see where there has been a problem in the past. If you register and perform your contributions under a single login it will be easier to show proof that you are doing more than just complaining. As far as working with myself or any other editors, I would recommend following the Wikipedia:BOLD, revert, discuss cycle method. If you have something specific then make the edit, and if someone reverts it take it to talk page. - Optigan13 01:19, 14 November 2007 (UTC)
PS: citing Private Parts and Miss America over and over doesn't change the "single source biography" comment. There is no such thing as "Judith Regan: Miss America." Howard Stern wrote both books, Ratso Sloman worked as the organizer, and Judith Regan was the editor for Harper Collins. Regan was given ReganBooks as her own imprimateur, under which the book was published. These attributions are incorrectly written.
And this may be personal preference, but using Chaunce Hayden, a former guest of the show, and his pennysaver "magazine" as a source for anything is like a fifth grade kid using the Classics Illustrated comic book version for a book report. Get real, chief.
Here is the paragraph Lil Dice deleted. The reason given, "I don't think an unauthorized biography is a legitimate source." Gee. Then I guess something like David McCullogh's "Truman" isn't a "legitimate source," since it was "unauthorized." (Truman being dead, he's not in the position to authorize anything.)
-- According to Paul D. Colford, a former writer for Long Island Newsday, Howard Stern listened to tapes of Steve and Garry sent from Chicago by a friend of the chief engineer at WCCC Hartford. Colford claims Stern eventually developed his on-air style as a result of these tapes. Later, Stern was hired to replace Dahl at WWWW Detroit when Dahl moved to Chicago.

(As Howard states in Private Parts.)

How is it not a single controversy is mentioned?
In an article of the life of, arguably, the most controversial radio personality in the last 30 years and there's not one mention of the monumental fights he had with FCC? Not a single mention of the fines (some even breaking records for largest FCC fines)? Why isn't the NPOV of this article being challenged? Putting this stuff in the "The Howard Stern Show" article only serves to isolate him from the controversy and I don't believe is fair to the readers. This makes him look like some guy that got overheard at lunch, not the media pioneer he was. Padillah (talk) 13:31, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

Howard Stern looks like Kenny G!
This needs inserted somewhere in the article. Howard Stern and Kenny G look like they were seperated at birth! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.162.58.225 (talk) 07:40, 14 January 2008 (UTC)
