Coagula (real name Kate Godwin, birth name Clark Godwin) is a former member of Doom Patrol. Kate is a male-to-female transsexual, and was one of the first transsexual characters in comics. She remains one of the only transsexual super-heroines. She was created by science fiction writer Rachel Pollack. Pollack named the character after Chelsea Godwin and transsexual writer Kate Bornstein.
Character History
Kate gained her powers while working as a prostitute. One of her customers is Rebis, a radioactive hermaphrodite; after Kate has sex with him/her, she discovers she can coagulate liquids and dissolve solids at will. She first tried out for the Justice League, but was rejected by them. She met the Doom Patrol while battling a villain called the Codpiece, who had devices such as a gun, a drill, and a spring-loaded boxing glove built into a special codpiece he designed and built. Coagula dissolved the device.[1][2]
Early on Kate is identified as a lesbian,[citation needed] but as the series progressed it became clear she was bisexual. She began a romance with Robotman.
The name Coagula comes from the alchemical term "Solve et Coagula", meaning "dissolve and coagulate".[3]
A while after the Doom Patrol split, Kate and Cliff took fellow teammate Dorothy Spinner on a camping trip with the intention of telling her she was adopted. But after hearing this Dorothy suffered a mental breakdown which caused a psychic explosion, killing Kate and supposedly killing Cliff while Dorothy was put into a coma. There are plans for Rachel Pollack to bring the character of Coagula back in the near future. Her fans are excited about this.
