Mario as shown in the Paper Mario Series

Mario is the primary protagonist of the series. The hero of the Mushroom Kingdom, he faces many challenges, from rescuing the lost Star Rod, to defeating a 1000-year old demon, to stopping an evil prophecy from destroying all existence. He is joined by various partners throughout the games.

Princess Peach

Princess Peach is the Princess of the Mushroom Kingdom she assists Mario in anyway she can. In the first game, she assists him by giving information of up-coming bosses and giving him items via a magical treasure chest. She eventually helps save the world from Bowser by wishing for Mario to have more strength. In the second game, she is kidnapped (yet again) by the X-Nauts after she opens a magical treasure chest taht only one with a pure heart can open. While in captivity of the X-Nauts she befriends their main computer, TEC, who is smitten by her, and assists her by allowing her to send e-mails to Mario's mailbox with helpful information about the X-Nauts' plans. At the end of the game Grodus takes her into the Palace of Shadows and she is possessed by the Shadow Queen, for only a maiden with a pure heart can be the queen's ideal vessel, fortunately Mario and his partners defeat the Shadow Queen and free Peach. In the third game, she is captured yet again by Count Bleck and forced to marry Bowser in order to cause the Chaos Heart to appear. Afterwards she escapes the Count's clutches and reunites with Mario. She is one of the Four Heroes prophecized in the Light Prognosticus and is a fully playable character, able to help Mario with her ability to glide over a long distance.

Bowser is usually the main antagonist of the Mario series. He was the primary antagonist of the first game. After realizing that the Star Spirits refused to grant his wishes, Bowser stole the Star Rod to give himself unnatural abilities and defeat Mario once and for all. He failed to do so, and after a magnificant battle on top of Peach's Castle he lost the Star Rod and his new found abilities. In the second game, he is a minor playable character, and shocked by the theft of Princess Peach (as he was trying to steal her himself). He tries to beat Mario to the Crystal Stars, without success. In the third installment, he is mentioned in the Dark Prognosticus as the monster king who, by marrying a pure-hearted princess, will cause the Chaos Heart to appear. He is also, ironically, one of the Four Heroes mentioned in the prophecy of the Light Prognosticus that will save the dimensions from destruction. Bowser becomes a fully playable character, and helps Mario by dealing lots of damage with his firey breath.

Luigi is Mario's brother and an underappreciated protagonist. He is generally looked over in favor for his brother. In the first game, he leaves Peach's party early and therefore avoids becoming captured and remains at home throughout the story. He is jealous of Mario that he goes on adventures while he has to tend to their home. While Mario is away he builds a secret room where he keeps his diary. In the second game, he is encountered several times in Rogueport, claiming that he was on his own adventure while Mario was off trying to collect the Crystal Stars. An author interviewed Luigi and wrote a book series based on his adventures. In the third game, he plays a dual role. He is at first brainwashed, turning the notorious Mr. L who attacks Mario with his "Brobot". After being restored, he comes to his senses and becomes Luigi again, as well as the fourth playable character.

Party Members

In his adventures, Mario is assisted by various different partners.

Paper Mario

Goombario

Goombario: Mario's first party member. One of Mario's biggest fans, he takes his father's advice accompanies Mario to save the Star Spirits. Outside of battle, he can tell Mario about the people he meets and the places he visit. His speciality is Headbonk.

Kooper: Mario's second party member. When Mario and co. first meet him, they must rescue his stolen shell from hordes of Fuzzies; afterwards, he joins the party to help Mario and follow in the footsteps of his childhood hero, the archaeolist Kolorado. Outside of battle, he can retreat into his shell and Mario can shoot him out short distances, allowing him to flip switches, grab items and attack enemies.

Bombette: She's Mario's third party member. She was an unwilling minion of the Koopa Bros.; when her temper got the better of her, she literally exploded on them, resulting in her being sent to the dungeon. She eagerly joined Mario to rebel against her captors. Her special move makes her explode; this move destroys cracked walls, rocks, and flips switches.

Parakarry: He is Mario's fourth party member. A Paratroopa mailman, Parakarry joins Mario's party after they help him recover the letters he's lost in Dry Dry Desert. He can carry Mario for a short amount of time, flying over gaps Mario cannot jump. He makes cameos in The Thousand-Year Door and Super Paper Mario as the brothers' mailman.

Lady Bow

Lady Bow: She is Mario's fifth party member. A member of Boo royalty; she holds the Star Spirit Skolar as part of a bargain until Mario takes down the Boo-eating Tubba Blubba and saves her subjects. She can turn Mario invisble, which stops enemies from noticing him and protects him from attacks. Lady Bow also makes an appearance in the second game in Poshley Heights with Bootler (her butler) after you beat the Shadow Queen.

Watt: She is Mario's sixth party member. A baby electric spark, she was imprisoned in a lantern by the Big Lantern Ghost of Shy Guy's Toybox, and joins Mario after he frees her. Her speciality is illuminate dark places and reveal invisible blocks.

Sushie: She is Mario's seventh party member. A Cheep-Cheep, Sushie is the babysitter of many Yoshi's children in Lavalava Island. She joins Mario to find the missing Yoshis. After Mario reaches a dock, he can hop on Sushie and swim on the surface of water and dive. She attacks enemies with water.

Lakilester: He is Mario's eighth and last party member. In Flower Fields, Mario and his team finds a Lakitu. He introduces himself by his nickname "Spike", then attacks. After he is defeated, his girlfriend, Lakilulu comes and asks Mario not to finish Lakilester. He thinks Mario is cool and joins the party. Mario can hop on his cloud and hover over certain surfaces, like spikes and lava. He attacks by throwing Spiny Eggs.

The Thousand-Year Door

Goombella: Mario's first sidekick in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. A Goomba, she is an aspiring archaeologist; she joins Mario to find the Crystal Stars after he saves her from Lord Crump. She attacks by Headbonking enemies, and can use her Tattle ability to find out enemies' weaknesses. Her vast knowledge gives Mario the heads-upon anything and everything, supplying him with hints on various puzzles.

Koops: A timid Koopa. Koops lives in the beautiful town of Petal Meadows, which is being besieged by the Dragon Hooktail. He joins Mario to save his town, avenge his father, and prove himself to his girlfriend, Koopie Koo. Mario can launch his shell to retrieve items and hit switches.

Madame Flurrie: A cloud spirit actress; disillusioned with the world, she retired to the secluded Boggly Woods. When the Punis of the Great Tree are in danger, she joins Mario to save them. Flurrie can breathe mighty winds to reveal hidden switches and the like; this move also disorients enemies, protecting Mario from attack.

Yoshi: A baby Yoshi that the player can name in the game. Mario rescues his egg from a hotdog vendor in the Glitz Pit, and he follows Mario after he hatches. His colors vary depending on when he is hatched. Mario can ride him to move faster and flutter across gaps.

Vivian: The youngest of the Shadow Siren sisters, Vivian is constantly put down by her oldest sister, Beldam, and blamed for anything and everything that goes wrong. Mario helps her recover her sisters' missing Superbobomb, although, seeing as how he has had his identity stolen by Doopliss, Vivian is unaware that she is actually helping her sisters' foe. When she discovers his true identity, she is at first hurt, but then joins with him, seeing as how he's been nicer to her than anybody else. Her Veil move hides Mario in the shadows, protecting him from enemies.

Bobbery: An old Bob-Bomb sailor. Bobbery retired from the seas after his wife, Scarlette, died, blaming himself for her death. When Mario shows him an old letter written on Scarlette's deathbed, he once again sets out towards Keelhaul Key. Mario can throw Bobbery; the Bob-Bomb walks forward and then explodes, detonating any obstacles in his way. He can also be detonated remotely.

Miss Mowz: The only optional partner. Miss Mowz, a Squeek mouse, runs the Lovely Howz of Badges; in actuality, she is a world-famous badge thief. When Mario completes her quest by finding the secret badge in Hooktail Castle, she joins the team. She can sniff out treasures and other hidden items.

Pixls

In Super Paper Mario, Mario is assisted by digital fairy-like beings known as Pixls.

Tippi: Tippi can reveal hidden doors, stairways, and other objects; she can also examine enemies to discover their weaknesses. Tippi was originally a human girl named Timpani, who befriended and eventually fell in love with Blumiere (Count Bleck), a man from the Tribe of Darkness. Blumiere's father did not approve of their relationship and when Blumiere refused to end his relationship with Timpani, his father cast Timpani into the dimensional void to wander in the dimensions forever. Timpani was later found and turned into a pixl by Merlon and assisted Mario, however she lost her memories as Timpani. When Mario and his friends confronted Count Bleck, Tippi began to regain her memories as Timpani and revealed her identity to Count Bleck, causing him to stray from his villainous ways. Timpani and Count Bleck affirmed their love for each other at the altar where Count Bleck had wed Bowser and Princess Peach in order to cancel out the Chaos Heart's power, seemingly sacrificing themselves in the process. After the credits, Timpani and Blumiere are seen walking off into the sunset.

Thoreau: This Pixl can help Mario and company pick up and throw objects at enemies, or at other obstacles.

Boomer: This Pixl helps Mario and company by giving him the ability to bomb things.

Slim" Slim makes Mario and company become paper thin. This ability avoids enemies, obstacles, and special holes in the floor.

Thudley: Thudley gives Mario and company the ability to ground-pound.

Carrie: Carrie the Pixl helps Mario and company avoid terrain hazards by carrying them over spikes and water.

Fleep: Fleep the Pixl flips various things using a "magical frame", and reveals hidden objects behind tears in the background.

Cudge: Cudge the Pixl enables the use of the hammer; Mario and company can hit objects with this ability.

Dottie: This Pixl shrinks Mario and company so they can go into tiny doorways, and gives Mario the ability to run on water.

Barry: A shield Pixl; if used at the right time, Barry counter-attacks all enemy attacks and projectiles.

Piccolo: This Pixl's songs can trigger in-game specialties, and cures Mario and company of status problems.

Dashell: This Pixl lets Mario and company move at a higher speed than normal.

Tiptron: Replaces Tippi after she disappears with Count Bleck. Can be bought from Francis for 999 Coins. [1] Tiptron believes herself to be the true Tippi, even though she is merely a robot designed to be like her.

The Star Spirits

  • Eldstar: The revered elder of Star Haven. His move, Refresh, restores Mario's health and flower points.
  • Mamar: The kindhearted, maternal Star Spirit. She can use her move, Lullaby, to put enemies to sleep.
  • Skolar: The studious Star Spirit. He attacks with Star Storm.
  • Muskular: The young, muscular Star Spirit that is full of energy. He attacks with Chill Out.

  • Kalmar: A warm-hearted Star Spirit, he dislikes fighting and arguing. His move, Up and Away, turns enemies into stars.

Other Important Characters

File:Kammy Koopa.jpg
Kammy Koopa

Kammy Koopa is an old female Magikoopa, and head advisor to Bowser. In the first game, she assists Bowser in the theft of the Star Rod, and creates a machine to increase Bowser's power tenfold. In the second game, she merely helps Bowser find the Crystal Stars so he can kidnap Peach.

Twink: A young star kid. In Paper Mario, he helps Peach sneak out of her room to deliver advice and information to Mario, along with giving him the ability to perform special battle moves. In the final confrontation, he contributes his power to the Star Beam.

The X-Nauts: The X-Nauts are a group of Extraterrestrial beings that seek to conquer the world. They are lead by Sir Grodus and their headquarters is stationed on the moon.

  • Sir Grodus: The leader of the X-Nauts, the invading aliens who seek to conquer the world; he uses a potent mixture of magic and technology to achieve his dark desires. Grodus kidnaps Peach from Rogueport and sends his minions to steal the Crystal Stars from Mario. He ultimately offers Peach was a host for the Shadow Queen, but the newly reborn demon simply blasts him to pieces with her dark magic. It is later revealed that he survived as his disembodied head.
  • Lord Crump: One of the higher-ranking X-Nauts. Crump is an evil but buffoonish figure, often bungling his missions through sheer stupidity and incompetence. He is one of the few characters that breaks the fourth wall. Although he is defeated on the Moon Base by Mario, he survives and regroups with Sir Grodus (or rather, his disembodied head).
  • TEC: A highly-advanced computer created by the X-Nauts. At first, TEC is blindly devoted to Sir Grodus, but begins to doubt his alliances after developing feelings for Peach. During her captivity, TEC allows her to escape her room and enter his terminal; in exchange for teaching him about the X-Nauts true motives, as well as love and emotion, TEC sends her messages to Mario. Grodus eventually discovers his treachery and has him shut down, although TEC uses the last remaining vestiges of his power to teleport Mario to Rogueport and destroy the base. In the end, it is revealed he somehow survived the blast, supposedly through the bond he shared with Peach.

Shadow Queen Possessing Peach

The Shadow Queen was an ancient demon who conquered the world years ago. She commanded many monstrous forces, including the three dragon siblings: Hooktail, Gloomtail and Bonetail, and created the Pit of 100 Trials as a dungeon for those she punished. She also created the Crystal Stars to increase her power and to command the power of the heavens, but was later sealed by their power thanks to the endeavors of four brave heroes. Locked in her Palace of Shadows behind the Thousand-Year Door, the only way to call the Shadow Queen back to the world was through the use of the Crystal Stars and a new physical form. Grodus offered her Peach for this purpose, but Peach broke free of her influence; the power of people's wishes through the Crystal Stars weakened her, allowing Mario to triumph.

File:Count Bleck.jpg
Count Bleck

Count Bleck: The presumed main antagonist of Super Paper Mario. He, through Bowser and Peach, tried to use the Chaos Heart to devour everything in existence. He was later revealed to be Blumiere, the former lover of Tippi's old embodiment, Timpani. He later releazes the error of his ways and destroys the Chaos Heart by marrying Timpani.

  • Nastasia: Count Bleck's loyal assistant. She brainwashes people into obeying Count Bleck, and does successfully with Luigi, turning him into Mr. L. She is shown as having romantic feelings for Count Bleck, but knows she will never be loved by him the way she loves him.
  • O'Chunks: A former general who lost his world and army after being stabbed in the back by his advisor. O'Chunks is a powerful but lack-witted warrior who, despite being alligned with Count Bleck, follows a code of honor and follows Bleck loyally.
  • Dimentio: The true antagonist of Super Paper Mario. He has the ability to travel throughout, and send others to other dimensions. At first he is seen as playful, but is then revealed to be a completely evil, and psychotic being. He can also create his own dimension, which makes his powers 256 times stronger. He always has a smile on his face, even while doing his evil deeds (a true gesture of insanity).
