Do Floridians think of their cities as settlements? Well, check out Category:Settlements in Florida that's as of today in your category hierarchy. I reverted it out for Kentucky, and I recommend all states do it as well. Kentucky uses "Subdivisions" and Massachusetts uses "Administrative divisions" (both reasonable). I have created a brand new banner template to replace the current one we have. It's a modified version of the {{WPGR}} template I've worked extensively on, which in turn is based on other projects. This new template should be able to replace {{WikiProject Florida}}, {{WikiProject Florida category}}, {{WikiProject Florida template}} and could be expanded to handle {{WikiProject Florida image}}, through the class parameter. The template I created is located here: User:Kimon/WPFL.

Love the idea of being able to assess Florida articles. If it's adopted, though, we should try getting a bot to maybe help in the assessment. Or if you could add the auto function, like {{WPBiography}} has, it'd help, 'cause I know there's lots of stubs. It should have the nested function, but I can add that if needed. • Ok, since more than a couple of weeks have passed, I assumed consensus and therefore I've created the new template {{WPFlorida}}. There's still some work to be done on the assessment scale etc. but, I expect to have that completed soon. I was thinking of creating a new page for the Heartland, the region of Florida that covers Hardee, Highlands, southern Polk and by some definitions could include the entire rural area that stretches down to Desoto, Glades and Hendry counties as well... Heh. I have left messages at Category Talk:regions of Florida and Talk:Southwest Florida on this subject over the past two days. The Heartland consists of six counties: DeSoto, Glades, Hardee, Hendry, Highlands, and Okeechobee (and possibly Polk County as well). I have a page for Florida's Heartland in work at User:Horologium/Sandbox, although it's still quite rough. One of the sticking points for me is creating a map; I have used the templates available to create one, but it is a .jpg, and I don't know how to convert it back to an .svg image. I don't want to upload a .jpg when all of the other maps are .svg files.

I checked that page in the sandbox. It's a good start, but could use some corrections and additions that I can make if I can do them in your sandbox. I don't know as much about the southern part of the Heartland without researching but I'm very familiar with Highlands County and we have a daily newspaper, a 3-times a week press and another weekly down in Lake Placid. Also, maybe a bit of discussion about the proposed Heartland Parkway?

For some reason, I wasn't "watching" this page, and I thought I was...

I provided the link to the sandbox for people to look at and to work on. I have no problem with project members going in and making corrections and expanding the article before we launch it. My biggest problems, as I noted, are the maps issue and the changes that will need to be made to the Southwest Florida page (including a new map). I have dinged the original creator of the maps (twice), but he's probably a little on the busy side. (He's one of the Wikimedia Foundation employees). I have a .jpg of the Heartland region saved on my computer, but I am a bit leery about uploading it, since all of the other maps are .svg formatted.

I left out the Heartland Parkway thing because it's just a proposal. The regional Airport proposal for DeSoto County falls under the same heading. Until the plans are set in place, let's not discuss them in the article. On a related note (see the next item), I have been busy on the Radio Stations, and have a lot of stubs for the Sebring market stations.

I have more familiarity with Highlands as well; My mother lives in Sebring, and her office is just north of the city, near Avon Park. I spent Christmas through Mid-February there, and became fairly familiar with the immediate area. I know little about the outlying counties. Horologium talk - contrib 06:47, 30 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have been doing some work on this list, because it was a whole lot of nothing before I started. I'd like some input before I start changing data that is already in the list, because if I change things without discussing them, people might get quite upset.

When I started, there was no standardization for format. Every city (of the cities that had any entries at all) had its own format, and some of them are just plain ugly. I set up a couple of the smaller cities (starting with Gainesville) into a tabular format, which lines everything up neatly, yet is still not too difficult to update if changes need to be made.

I went through a couple of the templates as well (Gainesville-Ocala, Sebring, Lakeland-Winter Haven, Daytona Beach, and Melbourne-Titusville-Cocoa) and made sure that the stations on the template are actually in the market area. Daytona and Melbourne were overrun with Orlando stations, and Lakeland had a fistful of Tampa stations. It's still a work in progress, but if nobody objects, I'd like to convert the rest of the list to the tabular format I developed. I'd also like people in the various cities to go through and weed out stations that don't belong to that market. (I saw a Boynton Beach station in the Miami list, and a Sarasota station in Tampa). If you live in a city that doesn't have anything listed, help me out. Create articles (stubs at least) on the stations in your area, and sanity-check the templates to make sure they're correct. A useful reference for stations in the middle third of the state is Central Florida Radio, which has a lot of history behind the stations. Some of their links are still broken from a rebuild, but a lot of them work.

I've been looking at the Regions of Florida section, and there are a few areas that I think should be adjusted. I'd like to see if we can come up with some sort of consensus before I start making wholesale changes.

North Central Florida: the narrative includes Hamilton and Baker counties, both of which are not highlighted on the map. I'd like to move Baker County to First Coast, and create a new map for North Central Florida, adding Hamilton County to the map.

First Coast: The article already specifically mentions Baker County as part of the region, but the map doesn't have Baker County highlighted.

Central Florida: Remove the reference to Marion County. It's not highlighted on the map, and it is on the North Central Florida map, which is a much better fit. All of the Gainesville media refer to "Gainesville/Ocala/Lake City", which ties Marion to that region rather than to Central Florida. Include more information about Polk and Sumter Counties in the article; they are mentioned only is the intro as "sometimes" part of the region, and ignored after that. Lakeland and The Villages are both fairly sizable cities/CDPs that don't have any mention in a Florida regions article.

Suncoast: I think the region extends too far south; almost all of the references I found limit the Suncoast to Pinellas County, and the neighboring counties to the north, south and east. There might be a little overlap for Pasco and Hernando counties (which are also part of the Nature Coast), but Collier, Lee, and Charlotte Counties should definitely not be included in the Suncoast. They are clearly part of Southwest Florida. Sarasota and Manatee counties could be split either way, although my inclination would be to include them in the Suncoast, and remove them from the SW Florida section. If we include Pasco and Hernando, we can make the Tampa Bay Area a subregion of the Suncoast, like the Orlando Area is a subregion of Central Florida, and the Emerald Coast is a subregion of the Florida Panhandle. I'd also like to alter the map to include entire counties, rather than just the coastal strip.

Southwest Florida: I'd like to strip a lot of counties from this region, sending Sarasota and Manatee Counties to the Suncoast, and Desoto, Hendry, and Glades counties to the Florida Heartland. Collier, Lee and Charlotte Counties form a single media area (radio and TV), and they are fairly distinct from the other counties surrounding them.

Gold Coast: I'd like to make this a subregion of South Florida, since it is simply the coastal region from Palm Beach to Miami.

South Florida: I'd like to add the Florida Keys, if not all of Monroe County, to this region, since they are tied fairly closely to Miami and Dade county.

Treasure Coast: I'd like to move Okeechobee County from this region to the Florida Heartland (which already includes it), since most of the references I have seen for the Treasure Coast are limited to Martin, St. Lucie, and Indian River counties. The Florida Heartland page did not exist when Okeechobee County was tossed into the Treasure Coast, and think that it was just a case of looking for a home that drew Okeechobee into it. On a cultural basis, Okeechobee is certainly closer to the Heartland than to the Treasure Coast.

I am trying to ensure that all of Florida is included in one region, and I am trying to remove as much overlap as possible. There are several counties that could be assigned to more than one region (Jefferson, Pasco/Hernando, Sarasota/Manatee, DeSoto/Glades/Hendry, and Okeechobee) and one or two that don't fit very well into any region at all (Sumter, Monroe), but my proposals limit the overlap as much as possible, move two regions into subregions, and make a home for every county in the state. As with the Florida Heartland, I need help from someone who can make .svg maps of the regions, but if I can get maps, I'll take on the writing tasks, which are fairly minimal. This WikiProject doesn't seem to be terribly active, but perhaps a not-too-difficult but fairly important project will energize the group.

I was looking at the list of the biggest cities (in the Florida template) and discovered that there are quite a few of the cities in the 50,000-100,000 range that have no infobox. (16 cities in all, plus 8 unincorporated areas). I've been adding infoboxes to Florida cities that I have edited, but perhaps we could have a task force set up to knock out the rest. The condition of some of the "important cities" articles is embarrassing (take a look at Palm Bay, Florida as an example; that needs a total rewrite), but adding infoboxes is something that is not too difficult and should be a basic requirement of an article before it passes stub stage. These cities need infoboxes:

Use the {{Infobox Settlement}} template, rather than the deprecated city infobox template.

There are dozens of smaller cities that don't have infoboxes either, but they're not quite as urgent. I've added infoboxes to DeLand, Gainesville (which was by far the largest city without one) and Sebring over the weekend, and will probably tackle some of the four in Broward County.
