FlashGet is a shareware download manager for Microsoft Windows.

Features and problems

What follows is a description of FlashGet(JetCar) 1.65

Pros

Annoyances

  • Only for Windows
  • For browsers other than Internet Explorer you need to download an extension, or set it up manually.
  • Some browsers prompt you asking what you want to do with a file download, and you must select to use FlashGet, and then another, very complicated dialogue box pops up for download information
  • Displays ads and pops-up ad windows (in Internet Explorer)

Get rid of advertisements

When you startup FlashGet, it'll contact several Cydoor servers to download latest advertisements. The advertisement files are stored in [FlashGet's directory]\ads\adcache434 and will be copied to [Your Windows directory]\System32\AdCache. You can delete these folders and files, but they will be downloaded and installed again the next time you run FlashGet.

If you see two files jc_all.htm and jc_link.htm in your FlashGet folder, use a text editor to delete its contents and then set them to read-only.

Method 1: NTFS

If you use NTFS file system, you can delete the files and set the \ads\adcache434 folder's privilege to prohibit read and write. From now on FlashGet will be unable to store anything in the \ads\adcache434 folder.

Method 2: Firewall

If you do not use NTFS but use a firewall or a personal filtering proxy such as Privoxy, you may want to ban these advertiser domains:

  • cycampaign.com
  • bns1.net
  • bns2.net
  • 2004cms.com

If FlashGet keeps downloading advertisements, ban other domains as well. Check your firewall log. The best choice is to use both methods.

You may use a serial number generator but always keep an eye on it. Some crack packages may contain spyware or other malware in them.
