Dr. Keith Dudemeister, played by Travis Schuldt, is a fictional character in the American sitcom Scrubs.
He is an intern at Sacred Heart Hospital (where the show takes place). On his first day ("My Intern's Eyes"), he was very timid, with only one item on the to-do list he carried around: "Find courage to talk." In the first episode with Keith, he is never actually seen, but the camera shows his point-of-view multiple times throughout the episode, in which he only talks one time, at the very end. With series protagonist J.D.'s encouragement, he quickly grew more confident with his abilities. However, for reasons that are not entirely clear, J.D. soon came to dislike Keith. It could perhaps be attributed to Keith's good looks and rapid progress as an intern. When the two happened to be standing in the middle of the ICU without shirts, J.D. asked sarcastically, "You think you're better than me, with your rock-hard abs and your dynamite areolas?" J.D.'s distaste for Keith was further exacerbated when Elliot made him (Keith) her "booty call." In one instance he gave all his other interns nicknames, in reference to Keith's unusual last name. This situation spawned the gag that may have been the sole purpose for Keith's rarely-referenced choice of surname in the series:
Keith: How come I don't get a nickname?
J.D.: Not everyones last name lends itself to a nickname, Keith.
Keith: My last name is "Dudemeister"!
J.D.: And what am I supposed to with that, okay? I'm not a magician! [1]
J.D. tried to get Keith fired, but the plan backfired and resulted in the dismissal of J.D.'s favorite intern, Cabbage. Even Dr. Perry Cox admitted that Keith was such a great intern. Ultimately, when Keith and Elliot's relationship became romantic as well as sexual, J.D. decided that since his friend (Elliot) liked him (Keith), he had to like him too. A year after Keith started dating Elliot, he and J.D. were on good terms. At one point, J.D. suggested that if Elliot had never come to Sacred Heart, the absence of sexual tension between himself and Elliot would probably have allowed him and Keith to become best friends.
Keith is in his second year at Sacred Heart, so he is now a resident. His last name was confirmed by Elliot to be pronounced DOO-duh-MY-stah, German for "Master of Dudes," though the word "Dude" does not exist in the German language.
Keith has a sister, Denise, whom he made out with in the 6th grade, according to "My Bright Idea."
Keith proposed to Elliot at the end of "My Turf War," and she said yes in the following episode ("My Cold Shower").
