On 19 April 2024 at 5:23 AM local time, Israel struck several sites in Iran, in response to Iran launching drones and missiles attack earlier in April, which itself was a response to an earlier Israeli attack on an Iranian consulate in Syria which killed 16 people. The strikes occurred in the city of Qahjavarestan, near the major population centre of Isfahan.[1] The city is adjacent to the Isfahan Shahid Beheshti International Airport and the 8th Shekhari Base of the Army Air Force. Additionally, at least eight flights were diverted from the region.[2] Iranian state media reported that Israeli drones over the region were shot down by the Iranian Air Defense Force.[3][4][5]
Background
On 13 April 2024, the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC), a branch of the Iranian military, in collaboration with the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Forces,[6] Lebanese group Hezbollah, and the Yemeni Houthis, launched attacks against Israel using drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles.[7] Iran stated that the operation was done in retaliation for the Israeli airstrike on an Iranian consulate annex in Damascus, used by the IRGC, two weeks earlier.[8] The operation was part of the Israel-Hamas war spillover and marked Iran's first direct attack on Israel since the start of their proxy conflict.[9]
