Championship standings before the race
After Max Verstappen (Red Bull Racing) was hit by Lando Norris (McLaren), following a collision caused by Valterri Bottas (Mercedes), in the Hungarian Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton took the lead of the Drivers' Championship by 8 points. Norris, Bottas and Sergio Perez all retired from the Hungarian Grand Prix, meaning they remained third, fourth and fifth, respectively.[3]
