Production
Development
In December 2014, an information leaked that Sony Pictures had made a deal with Nintendo to create an animated film based on the Mario franchise,[3] but the project never went into production.
In November 2017, the Wall Street Journal reported that Nintendo would be teaming up with Universal Pictures and Illumination to make an animated Mario film.[4][5][6] However, in January 2018, Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima stated that a deal has not been finalized, but that an announcement will come soon. Kimishima hopes that if the deal is successful, a 2020 release date would be possible.[7] By the end of the month, Nintendo announced that the movie will be made with Shigeru Miyamoto and Chris Meledandri co-producing.[8]
According to Miyamoto, he knew that the process of making a film was far different from that of making a video game, and wanted a film expert to lead the effort. In Nintendo's work with Universal Parks & Resorts to create Mario-based attractions, Miyamoto had met Meledandri, and they had several discussions. Miyamoto found Meledandri's creative process similar to his own, and felt he would be the proper lead for a Mario film. They had started more earnest discussions of the film as early as 2016, knowing that if they felt it wasn't working that they could easily walk away. However, by the time of the official announcement, Miyamoto said that they have good discussions over the screenplay and feels good progress to a proper film.[9] Meledandri stated that the film was a "priority" for Illumination and that it will most likely come out in 2022. He added that Miyamoto will be "front in center" with creating the movie.[10] Miyamoto choose to develop the movie because he wanted to "combine [Nintendo's] long-beloved software with that of video assets, and utilize them together for extended periods" so "the amount of people who would contact [their] IP would widen, and increase the amount of people engaging with [their] IP. Then, [they would] be able to further increase the spread of [their] media via video".[11]
On February 1, 2019, Nintendo's president, Shuntaro Furukawa revealed that development for the film has begun.[12] On January 31, 2019, Nintendo revealed that the film's right will be owned by them instead of Universal Pictures so "the movie can be leveraged for business opportunities".[13]
In August 2021, during a podcast, Sebastian Maniscalco announced that he has been cast in the film as the voice of Spike, Mario and Luigi's boss from the game Wrecking Crew.[14]
Animation
The film will be animated by Illumination Mac Guff in Paris. Due to Illumination's animators being used to work remotely from their headquarters in Santa Monica and the Mac Guff studio in Paris, the film's production was relatively unaffected by the COVID-19 pandemic.[15]
Release
The film is set to be released sometime in 2022 by Universal Pictures.[12][16]
