Kabul, the capital city of Afghanistan, fell to Taliban forces on 15 August 2021 in the culmination of a military offensive that began in May 2021 against the Afghan government. The capture took place hours after President Ashraf Ghani fled the country and abandoned the city’s presidential palace. Most of the provincial capitals of Afghanistan had fallen one after the other in the midst of a U.S. troop withdrawal that was to be completed by the end of August. |

Tense negotiations are ongoing between a Taliban delegation and Afghan officials, although it appears unlikely that they will end in anything less than an unconditional surrender by the government. A peaceful transfer of power has been requested by the Taliban, and the government has declared its willingness to abide. However, the government has requested that power be transferred to a transitional government, while the Taliban insists upon a complete transfer of power, despite the government's concerns. NATO forces still maintained a presence in Kabul as well. |

The Taliban and allied militant groups began a widespread offensive on 1 May 2021, simultaneous with the withdrawal of most U.S. troops from Afghanistan. Following its rapid defeat across the country, the Afghan National Army was left in chaos, and only two units remained operational by mid-August: The 201st Corps and 111th Division, both based in Kabul. The capital city itself was left encircled after Taliban forces had captured Mihtarlam, Sharana, Gardez, Asadabad, and other cities as well as districts in the east. In the days preceding the fall, the projection for the situation of Kabul rapidly worsened. U.S. officials brought a forecast in early August that Kabul could hold out for several months, but the week of the fall brought more grim forecasting; five days before the Taliban reached Kabul, expectations degraded and analysis suggested the capital would last "30 to 90 days", and within two days, officials were suggesting the city would fall within the week. |

After the fall of Herat on 12 August, the U.S. and U.K. governments announced the deployment of 3,000 and 600 of their troops respectively to the Kabul airport, in order to secure the airlifting of their nationals, embassy staff and the Afghan civilians who worked with the coalition forces out of the country. Officialsof which side? said that the first deployment would transpire in the next 24 to 48 hours and that it would be completed by the end of the month.cn |

Notability
This fails WP:GNG and WP:CRYSTAL.
In all probabilities, it will be a (not anti-climatic) surrender with some kind of transitional government. TrangaBellam (talk) 09:27, 15 August 2021 (UTC)
- So if it's just some peaceful surrender, how come the source you removed referred to 'heavy assaults' and a citywide blackout?
- Even if it is an anti-climatic surrender, it's still a major point in the conflict and should probably have an article of its own. The Fall of Saigon took all of one day, yet it still has an article dedicated to it and it has more than enough sources to back it up. NHCLS (talk) 09:34, 15 August 2021 (UTC)
- In that case, it will still not be a battle and a title like Fall of Kabul (2021) will be more appropriate. But currently even that title is not appropriate, per WP:CRYSTAL. 176.62.32.5 (talk) 09:37, 15 August 2021 (UTC)
- According to WP:CRYSTAL: "All articles about anticipated events must be verifiable, and the subject matter must be of sufficiently wide interest that it would merit an article if the event had already occurred." I think there's a good argument that the Battle/Fall of Kabul (you're probably right about needing to rename it "Fall") meets both criteria - there are verifiable sources about what's occurring and it's definitely of sufficiently wide interest for its own article. NHCLS (talk) 09:40, 15 August 2021 (UTC)
- A battle using lots of explosives would be anticlimatic - and the massive arrival of US aircraft for the evacuation could also be argued as anticlimatic, with a high carbon footprint. A nearly bloodless surrender, which seems likely since Ghani has already flown out of Afghanistan and left the other politicians to negotiate the power transfer, could rather be seen as pro-climatic. Boud (talk) 14:57, 15 August 2021 (UTC)

NHCLS (talk) 09:40, 15 August 2021 (UTC)
- NHCLS, the only source to mention of "city-wide blackout" and "heavy assaults" is a private security firm who has no repute for journalism (of any kind) and is yet to be cited by any MSM across the entire Afghan Conflict. TrangaBellam (talk) 19:35, 15 August 2021 (UTC)
- In that case, it will still not be a battle and a title like Fall of Kabul (2021) will be more appropriate. But currently even that title is not appropriate, per WP:CRYSTAL. 176.62.32.5 (talk) 09:37, 15 August 2021 (UTC)
Requested move 15 August 2021
- The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
The result of the move request was: Preliminary WP:SNOW consensus for Fall of Kabul (2021), which is a much stronger consensus than that for the current title. Editors also noted the current title is misleading and there is an immediate concern with Wikipedia spreading the idea of a fictional battle. Discussions may continue to find more suitable titles. - Agree, not yet, only when it finalizes. But perhaps a title like Surrender of Kabul would be even more appropriate (when it happens in few hours or days). 176.62.32.5 (talk) 10:29, 15 August 2021 (UTC)
- Given that page exists maybe effectively merge this one into that one following confirmation of handover? Apache287 (talk) 10:34, 15 August 2021 (UTC)
- We should not rename it until the city has actually fallen. Applodion (talk) 10:43, 15 August 2021 (UTC)
- Yes we should call it a battle of Kabul. Its more NPOV and before an actual fall its verey premature to call it a fall F.Alexsandr (talk) 11:18, 15 August 2021 (UTC)
- I would say wait for the coming events so we can see. Negotiations could break down and it’d be a battle with no resistance which would make the name appropriate, or we could merge this article to the Surrender of Kabul as Apache287 said. ArabMan719 (talk) 10:45, 15 August 2021 (UTC)
- Support.
Not yet. We have time. Let first see how the next 24 hours unfold. We could still see an uprising or any unexpected event which History has in its sleeve. Yug (talk) 11:28, 15 August 2021 (UTC) PS: no, i don't expect an uprising, but as everyone I don't know what will happen so I recommend to wait few more hours. Also, the AFP is now reporting on negotiation, no fight, and possible peaceful transition. I added the source. As far as I can tell, the gov is still mostly in charge in Kabul, there is only some Taliban in the inner city, and disputed control around it. Yug (talk) 11:59, 15 August 2021 (UTC)Battle is clearly innacurate, fall is lightly too early. Yug (talk) 14:49, 15 August 2021 (UTC) - It seems to me that it would be appropriate to rename this article as proposed, having Fall of Kabul (2001) and Fall of Saigon as examples of what should be done. Maybe its not necessary to rename it right now, but generally speaking, it should be renamed somewhere along the way, when its clarified whether the Taliban took the city in a real battle or not. —Sundostund (talk) 12:16, 15 August 2021 (UTC)
- Negotiation ongoing, not yet fallen. Can rename it "Siege" as of now, but not more. Battle seems observably inaccurate tho since there is no report of meaningful clashes. Yug (talk) 12:38, 15 August 2021 (UTC)
- We should not rename it until the city has actually fallen. No advertisement of violence.Curious km (talk) 13:40, 15 August 2021 (UTC)
- It's not confirmed to fall yet, so maybe later. Wait for news sources to refer to the incident as a "fall" (which, considering I'm getting almost nothing regarding fighting in the city, they probably will). Juxlos (talk) 13:48, 15 August 2021 (UTC)
- The title should be Siege of Kabul until the city's downfall is confirmed. Calling the events "Battle of Kabul" or "Fall of Kabul" is inappropriate.--Fontaine347 (talk) 13:55, 15 August 2021 (UTC)
- Is it really a siege, though? From what I've seen, the biggest obstacle the Taliban's encountered in taking over the city is traffic jams caused by evacuees. Juxlos (talk) 14:15, 15 August 2021 (UTC)
- Town is surounded by larger forces. No need to fight or build a wall or close the gates. It's de facto a siege. There is no escape but surrender or lead a last stand. Yug (talk) 14:36, 15 August 2021 (UTC)
- Support - Ashraf Ghani has apparently fled the country and the Taliban are moving in to take up policing functions. I think we can pretty clearly say this is the Fall of Kabul now NHCLS (talk) 14:22, 15 August 2021 (UTC)
- President has fleed, he is then no more in charge. Who is ? Without formal-public agreement we don't know yet, we must assume some central government representative is still negociating. Yug (talk) 14:38, 15 August 2021 (UTC)
- Support: Ghani has fled; the government has fallen (effectively). The page should say so. — Javert2113 (Siarad.|¤) 14:35, 15 August 2021 (UTC)
- Support - I support calling it the "Fall of Kabul (2021)" or "Fall of Kabul". There appears to be no big siege or major street fighting, or any resistance by Afghan government security forces at all, therefore I would not call it a "battle" or a traditional siege at this point. According to sources, Ghani has fled. RopeTricks (talk) 14:39, 15 August 2021 (UTC)
- Support as it appears to increasingly be the WP:COMMMONNAME. I can't see it being described as a battle very much, and the use of that word is misleading for the reasons RopeTricks mentioned. — Czello 14:42, 15 August 2021 (UTC)
- Support per WP:COMMMONNAME, relative lack of violence thus far all things considered.Abovfold (talk) 14:59, 15 August 2021 (UTC)
- Support as a descriptive name matched by most of the reliable sources. War crimes as the Taliban enter Kabul are, by definition, not "battle". Boud (talk) 15:03, 15 August 2021 (UTC)
- Comment - this could be closable under WP:SNOW fairly soon if this consensus continues. Wikipedia will look silly if we create a fictional battle while a power transfer is taking place. Boud (talk) 15:10, 15 August 2021 (UTC)
- Support renaming to Fall of Kabul, because that is what is happening on the ground. President Ghani has fled. --Inspector Semenych (talk) 15:16, 15 August 2021 (UTC)
- Support Barely any resistance - ANA many have deserted or fled - President has too. Eastfarthingan (talk) 15:19, 15 August 2021 (UTC)
C class
Hi! I'm a relatively new editor and while I do agree this is a C-class article I'm wondering if there would be some kind of wait until the referencing and content sections of the B-criteria could be properly assessed. Like how would that process go? Especially since I doubt there will be academic articles until some weeks in the future.A. C. Santacruz (talk) 17:18, 15 August 2021 (UTC)
- It can be assessed at any time - realistically for this article, wait a few more days until events have settled down and editors have had time to update. Juxlos (talk) 00:55, 16 August 2021 (UTC)
Translated bold names for the lead
It may be wise of us to see if there are Dari or Arabic names for the events that are unfolding. -Indy beetle (talk) 18:17, 15 August 2021 (UTC)
- So far it looks like Arabic and Farsi Wikipedia are both currently going with "Fall", at least according to Google Translate. --eduardog3000 (talk) 18:49, 15 August 2021 (UTC)
- There isn't a proper name for this in English yet, so thinking about other languages is rather premature. Surtsicna (talk) 22:36, 15 August 2021 (UTC)
