J. Michael Tatum is an American voice actor, ADR director and script writer who provides voices for a number of English versions of Japanese anime series and video games.
Biography
In 2005, Tatum ran into Funimation ADR director Christopher Bevins, who cast him as Rikichi in Samurai 7. Tatum has been cast in several notable roles, including Kyoya Ootori in Ouran High School Host Club, Sebastian Michaelis in Black Butler, Tomoe in Kamisama Kiss, France in Hetalia: Axis Powers, Erwin Smith in Attack on Titan, Okabe Rintaro in Steins;Gate, Eneru in One Piece, Tenya Iida in My Hero Academia and Rei Ryuugazaki in Free! – Eternal Summer.
From January 2010 to January 2014, he hosted That Anime Show podcasts with friend and co-worker Terri Doty and ADR Engineer Stephen Hoff.[2]
At the Florida Supercon 2015 panel, when he was asked what was his inspiration to go into voice acting, Tatum said that when he was young he had a speech impediment and his speech coach had him get involved in theater. As he was reciting and memorizing scripts, they noticed that his stuttering started to gradually disappear. He then got into drama and theater acting, and that voice acting is great in that it enables him to play more characters than on camera.[3]
In 2017, Tatum was cast for the English voice of Hideki Akasaka in Shin Godzilla.
Since October 2018, he and Jamie Marchi co-host the ghost story podcast Ghoul Intentions.[4]
Personal life
Tatum is openly gay.[3] During a panel at Ichibancon 2014, he had said that he came out to his family during his college years, with his father having already known about his sexuality for some time. On October 16, 2018, he became engaged to his long-time partner and fellow voice actor Brandon McInnis in Paris. He resides in Los Angeles, California.[1]

Isaac and Miria's lighthearted subplot effectively takes some of the edge off the dark moments, but the show never flip flops from serious to silly like Linebarrels of Iron. It transitions smoothly to humor and back again. J. Michael Tatum and Caitlin Glass do a great job capturing Isaac and Miria for the dub.

Funimation has done a nice job with the dub. Weirdly, though, Brina Palencia and J. Michael Tatum very carefully annunciate every word in the show. I couldn't tell if they were aping the super-articulate speech of the Japanese actors or what. It's not bad, it's just a little odd. The dub script is quite loyal to the subs.

Just as I write this, I'm sitting smack in the middle of a room with almost nine hundred Black Butler fans, most of whom are currently going nutso and bum-rushing the stage because the show's English language dub actor, J. Michael Tatum, is putting shoes on a lady dressed as the heroine. Earlier, I witnessed what had to be at least five hundred people sing along to "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" in perfect unison. It's hard not to smile at that kind of spectacle, but not THAT hard.

I was particularly impressed with William T. Spear's voice in the dub. J. Michael Tatum as Sebastian sounds cute enough, but I thought Sebastian sounded cuter in Japanese (sorry, Tatum; you were sexier in other dubs).

J. Michael Tatum does a nice job in the dub as Eneru, in all his megalomaniacal madness. I keep missing the dub commentary tracks because they're not listed in the Extras menu, which is usually where one expects to find them. There are never any other extras in these sets, but the content of the show usually makes up for it
- ^ Finnegan, Erin (February 21, 2011). "Shelf Life - Spring Awakening". Anime News Network. Retrieved June 2, 2016.
In the commentary track, J. Michael Tatum talks about how Eneru was his first major role, and jokes about using the Eneru voice at a drive-through. This particular commentary provides some insight into the careers of voice actors and the production, which is fairly interesting

I am frequently surprised while watching bad anime to hear dub actors who manage to deliver a convincing emotional performance. Perhaps they are able to suss out the characters' motivations in a way that I cannot. J. Michael Tatum in particular delivers a good manly crying scene as Gorneo.

The dub didn't knock my socks off, but I enjoyed J. Michael Tatum as a deep voiced politician and Stephanie Young as his sultry sister

J. Michael Tatum sounds like he was born to play Kaji. I found this dub far more tolerable than previous Eva dubs I've tried to watch, although I can't get over John Swasey as Gendou; his voice just isn't deep enough.

Wabisuke, the black sheep of the family and a shades-of-gray villain, has been working on a shady project for the U.S. Defense Department. He's also the only iPhone user in the film (everyone else uses Japanese-looking phones). Wabisuke's complicated relationship with his family could be symbolic of Japan's relationship with the U.S. J. Michael Tatum has just the right sound as Wabisuke in the dub.
