English: Sea Island red peas are a cultivar of Vigna unguiculata subsp. Unguiculata. They were brought to the Sea Islands of the American south via the Trans-Atlantic slave trade. This variety of Cowpea is an endemic heirloom of the Gullah people that inhabit the islands.
