Summary

Description
English: Typical flat topped Karoo koppies (or hills/mountains) due to the erosion resistant horizontal layers of dolerite (subsurface lava) which were injected between the sedimentary strata of the Karoo Supergroup about 180 million years ago as an immediate prelude to the break-up of Gondwana. The soft sedimentary rocks have since then been eroded away to form a generally flat plain, interrupted by these koppies where the underlying shales were protected by a cap of dolerite. This range of mountains is known as the Keiskieberge, near Calvinia.
