Description
English: Soldiers and civilians were tied in groups of fifty and executed by the Japanese Army, angered by house-to-house fighting inside Nanking. The bodies above have been dead some time. Notice telephone pole and wires lying across the men in foreground. Japanese soldiers in background are using the carts for systematic looting of shops, chiefly for food. Unusual in a well-disciplined army like Japan’s, the organized looting of Nanking would indicate that the Japanese Army commissariat needs food more than prestige.
