Summary

Description
English: Howard monument Rudbaxton This extraordinary monument was erected by Joanna Howard in 1685 to commemorate members of her family (including herself) who lived in a nearby gentry mansion. It consists of five almost lifesize figures painted in bright colours, standing in three vertical recesses and all except Joanna, holding skulls. Below are explanatory inscriptions and the whole is surrounded by ornamentation with a pediment above. The colours may not be authentic but the whole thing makes a great impact, the figures having a warmth and humanity about them that is unusual to find in stone.
