In 1885 gold was discovered on the Witwatersrand; here are the early stages (ca. 1887) of mining the largest gold reef ever discovered anywhere in the world. Today the mine shafts extend 12,000 feet below the surface of the earth. From Leonard Thompson, A HISTGORY OF SOUTH AFRICA, rev. edn (New Haven and London: Yale University Press, 1995), plate #19.
