The image is a page from one of the diaries of Harriet Louisa Browne. Harriet was the wife of Thomas Gore-Browne a British colonial administrator, who was Governor of New Zealand from 1855-1861. Archives New Zealand holds some of the journals and diaries kept by Harriet and also Thomas Gore-Browne, which hold some enclosed papers and photographs of their time in New Zealand and other overseas posts. This particular diary is from 1855 and the page opened is dated 13 September 1855, Auckland, New Zealand. This is also around the time that Harriet and Thomas Gore-Browne first arrived in New Zealand. On this particular page Harriet talks about a visit to the Poor Knights and Bay of Islands. Within the diary’s pages are found mementos, cards and embroidery samples collected by Harriet.
