Summary

Description
English: Cannabinoids are natural chemicals found in the brain that form a connection with CB-1 receptors. When marijuana is used THC connects with the CB-1 receptors rather than the cannabinoid. Neurotransmitters, including dopamine flood into the synaptic cleft causing Ca+ to be pumped into the postsynaptic neuron at higher levels than observed in healthy natural stimuli. The higher amount of neurotransmitters gives the “high” often associated with cannabis. THC, acting through cannabinoid receptors, activates the brain’s reward system, which includes regions that give the response to healthy pleasurable behaviors such as sex and eating. THC also disrupts functioning of the cerebellum and basal ganglia, brain areas that regulate balance, posture, coordination, and reaction time. The first diagram shows what should happen and the second diagram shows what happens when THC is introduced.
