A monument to the 1916 rising, Sarsfield bridge, Limerick. This monument replaces one blown up by the IRA in 1930's. That statue was of limerick man who fought in the Crimean War and went missing in action. A few years after his father built a statue to his memory he reportedly turned up in Afghanistan working as a scout for the Russians. The story inspired Kipling's "The Man Who Was". [1] Down at the docks near the Radisson hotel there are some Russian Cannons which were captured in Crimea and brought to limerick as ballast for ships. This was common practice at the time.
