Biography

Born in São Paulo[7] in 1976, Toco started playing guitar when he was a young boy. He took his first steps in the music scene working for a TV program called “Ensaio” dedicated to the Brazilian music, while he was studying Science of Communication at FAAP University [8] in São Paulo. Thanks to Fernando Faro, the director of this show [9], Toco was introduced to famous artists like Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso and many others.

In ’99 Toco left the TV program and started to follow some musical productions.[10] Later that year he decided to move to Italy where he met artists like Adi Souza, who worked as vocalist with Vinicius de Moraes, Rosalia de Souza, the best well-known Brazilian artist in Italy and Stefano Tirone aka S-Tone Inc., with whom he produced his first album “Instalaçao Do Samba”.[11] This definitely started the collaboration with the Milanese label Schema Records.

Recorded in Milan, embellished with the typical European sound, this first album achieved noteworthy success both in Europe and Japan and it acted as a springboard for the second effort by the Brazilian artist: “Outro Lugar”.[12]

"Outro Lugar" was initially recorded in Rio de Janeiro, with significant contributions from Roberto Menescal who played the guitar on every track, inspired some of the sound and captained the Brazilian band, which contained esteemed musicians. Particularly double-bass player Adriano Giffoni, pianist Adriano Souza who played also in Rosalia De Souza’s album “Brasil Precisa Balançar”, which incidentally happened to also be produced by Roberto Menescal.[13] The recording was then refined in Milan by S-Tone Inc. and released under the label Schema Records in 2007. All these elements helped shape the album's intended sound: a sound inspired from the past yet aimed at creating a modern, fresh vibe through thorough attention. Lightly touched by electronics, filled with grooves which perfectly blend into acoustic instruments.[14]

Notable Uses in Media

The strings from Toco's song "Outro Lugar" were sampled on PinkPantheress' track "Nineteen" in her 2021 debut album To Hell With It [15]

Toco's song "Guarapiranga" was featured on the soundtrack of Silver Linings Playbook, a 2012 film which awarded Jennifer Lawrence an Academy Award prize as best actress in a leading role in 2013.[16][17]
