Tim Banks is a Canadian businessman, real estate developer, and community advocate based in Prince Edward Island, Canada.[5] He is the CEO of APM Group, a construction and development firm operating in Atlantic Canada. Banks has been involved in numerous construction and development projects across Canada. Tim Banks has made his mark on history through controversy.[6] [7] [8]

Early Life

Born in Summerside, Prince Edward Island, Tim faced several challenges during his early years, including the sudden death of his father and undiagnosed dyslexia, which contributed to difficulties in reading but strong skills in mathematics. After the passing of his father, he left school in grade 9 to take over the family business, a garage and service station in Summerside.[9]

Education

Later completed his high school equivalency (GED) at age 18. In 1974, Banks graduated from Holland College in Charlottetown with a diploma in Construction Technology. Banks was later named as a Holland College Distinguished Alumni.[1][10]

Career

APM MacLean

Tim Banks is the owner and CEO of APM MacLean, one of the largest all-in-one construction companies. [11]

Blackbush

In 2017, Tim Banks started to develop Blackbush Resort, an 80 acre property, on the North Shore of Prince Edward Island.[12] Banks finished construction and opened the resort in 2024. [13]

Philanthropy

Environmentalism

Banks has participated in various philanthropic efforts and community initiatives. He served on the Nature Conservancy of Canada's campaign committee for the "Force for Nature" along side J.D. Irving and John Risley who all helped fundraise 32 Million and protect over 64,000 acres of land throughout Atlantic Canada.[14] Banks' contributions helped the Nature Conservancy of Canada establish the Governors Island Nature Reserve.[15][16] In 2009, Tim served as a Director for the Nature Conservancy of Canada.[17] Banks has received recognition for his donations to the Nature Conservancy.[18] In 2015, as a board member of the Nature Conservancy of Canada, Banks along side Canadian Senator and fellow board member, Diane Griffin, worked on a committee to protect land at Bonshaw Hills, Prince Edward Island, during a controversial highway development project.[19][20][21] Banks was the subject of a video campaign for the Nature Conservancy of Prince Edward Island, that has since been made private. [22] Tim Banks was an advocate and supported the protection of the Upton Farm Lands.[23][24]

Education and Opportunity

Banks has often shared his vision for a thriving, inclusive PEI. He has a career-long track record of creating skills and employment opportunities for youth. Tim Banks donated over half a hectare of land for the development of an inclusive non-profit Centre that assists Islanders with intellectual disabilities.[25] Banks has spent time volunteering to raise money for P.E.I. Literacy.[26] Banks donated $100 Thousand to jumpstart the fundraising for the Boys and Girls Club of Summerside.[27][28][29][30] Banks co-chaired a financing campaign that helped raise $6 Million for the University of Prince Edward Island's School of Business. [31][32]UPEI, which is PEI's most esteemed university has an award for top business students given in the name of Tim Banks Entreprenial Spirit Award.[33] Tim Banks and wife Carrie McNabb have been recognized for their personal donations to UPEI.[34]

Social & Affordable Housing Initiatives

In 2023, Banks has partnered with the Government of Prince Edward Island to build 111 social housing units.[35]

Art & Culture

Banks has been involved in numerous restoration and renovations projects of Charlottetown architecture that holds both cultural and historic significance. These projects including the Kay's Brothers Building, Welsh and Owen Building and the Confederation Centre of the Arts.[36][37][38] Banks faced 4.2 million dollar lawsuit regarding the development of the Welsh and Owen Building.[39]

Accolades

Atlantic Business magazine named Tim Banks a Top 50 CEO in Atlantic Atlantic five time and in 2008 he was inducted into their Business Hall of Fame.[4] [40][41] In 2012, Banks became a recipient of the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal.[2] In 2015, he was inducted into the Junior Achievement PEI Business Hall of Fame.[42][43] [44]

Controversies

As a prominent developer, Banks has been involved in debates over land use and development policies in PEI. He has advocated for reducing regulatory barriers to business and development projects in the province.[45]

Tim has been the face of many newsworthy legal disputes, including right of ways, environmental issues and development permits.[46][47] Most recently, Banks' lawsuit has brought on discussion of legislation reform regarding Anti-SLAPP laws.[48][49][50][51][52][53]

Greenwich

For over two decades Tim Banks, has been battling with the National Parks of Canada over the development of land Banks owns.[54][55] In 2002, he was the subject of national debate between Peter MacKay and Hon. Gerry Byrne, in the House of Commons of Canada.[56] As recently as 2024, Banks has been in discussion with the National Parks to sell them the land.[57][58]

Point Deroche

In 2023, Banks purchased a controversial property in Point Deroche,[59] on the North Shore of Prince Edward Island.[60][61] Banks has been in discussion with the provincial government to donate 40 acres of the property to become protected wetlands.[62]
