Jacques Faul is a South African sports administrator involved in cricket management and governance. He has served as the acting CEO of Cricket South Africa (CSA) and CEO of the Titans cricket franchise.
Early life and education
Jacques Faul was raised in Klerksdorp, South Africa. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) from North-West University, where his research focused on stakeholder management strategies during mega-events. He also earned a Master of Business Administration from the Management College of Southern Africa, with his thesis exploring the impact of multinational competitions on domestic stadium sponsorship in cricket: A critical review of base camp city stakeholder management during a mega-sport event.[1]
Faul also holds a Master of Laws from De Montfort University, specialising in sports law, and an Executive Certificate in Major Event Management from the University of Technology Sydney. He has also completed certifications in Labour Law and Sports Law from the University of Johannesburg and NWU.[2]
Career in cricket administration
North West Cricket Union
Faul began his career as the Marketing and Events Manager at the North West Cricket Union, later advancing to CEO. During his tenure, he prioritised financial stability and grassroots cricket development, ensuring sustainable growth for the union.[3]
Titans Cricket
In 2013, Faul was appointed CEO of Titans Cricket, one of South Africa's leading cricket franchises. Under his leadership, the team won multiple domestic championships. Faul implemented strategies to enhance sponsorship acquisition, player development, and operational efficiency, solidifying the Titans’ reputation as a top-performing team.[4]
Cricket South Africa
Faul first served as acting CEO of Cricket South Africa in 2012, following a financial mismanagement scandal involving the previous CEO. His priorities included restoring organisational stability and addressing governance issues.[5] He returned as acting CEO in 2019 during another crisis at CSA. He took steps to rebuild stakeholder confidence, address governance challenges, and improve financial management. Despite his efforts, Faul stepped down in 2020, citing ongoing governance issues.[6]
Academic contributions
Faul is a Professor of Practice and member of the advisory board at North-West University Business School.[7] He co-developed the Mastery in Global Event Leadership Short Learning Programme,[8] designed to equip participants with skills in managing mega and major events. Faul frequently lectures on topics such as sports law, stakeholder management, and crisis communication.[9]
Publications
In 2024, Faul published *Crisis Management in Sport*, a book providing practical strategies for navigating organisational crises. The book is frequently referenced in sports management literature.[10]
Advocacy and social initiatives
Faul has been involved in initiatives to promote diversity and inclusivity in cricket. He publicly supported the Black Lives Matter movement and acknowledged CSA’s challenges in transformation during the Social Justice and Nation Building hearings.[11]
