Con Kennedy (Born in March 1971) is an Irish graphic designer, researcher, and educator at Technological University Dublin School of Art and Design[1], specialising in visual communication design and entrepreneurship in the creative sectors.

His public work includes design advocacy at the Institute of Designers in Ireland and DesignWeek[2]. He is also the co-founder and design editor of the design journal Iterations| Design Research and Practice Review[3].

Early Life and Education

Kennedy was born in Oliver Bond House, in the Liberties area of Dublin city centre[4]. He was educated at St. Audoen’s National School on Cook Street and, later, at the Liberties Vocational School (now Liberties College of Further Education) on Bull Alley Street, adjacent to St. Patrick’s Street and St. Patrick’s Cathedral and Park. Kennedy subsequently enrolled at the Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) College of Marketing and Design (COMAD) in Mountjoy Square, where he was conferred with a BA (Hons) in Visual Communication Design in 1995[5].

Kennedy returned to DIT in 2008, where he was conferred with a Master of Arts Degree in Professional Design Practice in the following year. He returned a third time to Technological University Dublin (formerly DIT), where, in 2023, he was conferred a Doctor of Philosophy from the TU Dublin School of Entrepreneurship and Marketing for his research on business models for graphic design enterprises[6][7].

Research and Career

Kennedy began his professional career as a graphic designer in 1995[8]. He worked as a senior designer for several prominent design companies, focusing on brand identity, corporate literature, and packaging design. In 2006, he formed his own design company[9] and later became an adjunct lecturer in visual communication design at the Dublin Institute of Technology. He later took up a part-time role at IT Carlow (now SETU), where, in 2015, he developed the first Master of Arts in Interaction Design in Ireland. In 2018, Kennedy took up a permanent post as a lecturer in Visual Communication Design at his alma mater.

Kennedy is a TU Dublin Academic Council member and has served as a visiting design professor at the Gengdan Institute[10] at the Beijing University of Technology.

Kennedy has played a pivotal role as a researcher in design entrepreneurship. He contributed to the 2016 Irish Government’s Policy Framework for Design in Enterprise in Ireland[11][12]. He was also a consultant for the Expert Group on Future Skills Needs[13] Winning by Design[14] report. In 2011, his master’s research on continuing professional development[15] was highlighted by Pivot Dublin[16] as elevating Dublin City’s design standards as part of the bid to become the World Design Capital.

Kennedy’s primary research focus is on design entrepreneurship[17] and business models[18]. He has spoken at various conferences and authored several research papers[19][20][21][22].

Awards and Honours

Kennedy’s graphic design work has been recognised internationally and featured in prestigious publications such as Creative Review (UK)[23], Graphic Design USA,  Page Magazine (Germany)[24]Logo Lounge Design Trends, Logo Lounge Master Library Volume 3[25], and Logolicious[26]. He has also contributed to David Airey’s book, Work for Money, Design For Love[27].

Kennedy has won several design awards, including two Institute of Designers in Ireland awards in 2012[28] for Design Education and in 2015 for a Special Contribution to Design[29]. Kennedy has been also featured in the irish media[30][31].
