Yeah, I deleted the images. I've blocked those three accounts. I don't think Gerald is going to give up anytime soon, so if you guys notice other socks that you're sure are his, you can tell me on my talk page and add them to the SSP report and I'll block them. There's also Category:Wikipedia_sockpuppets_of_Gerald_Gonzalez and Category:Suspected_Wikipedia_sockpuppets_of_Gerald_Gonzalez for tagging the accounts. Cheers, Sarah 00:16, 15 March 2008 (UTC)

Tina Tinio entry getting a large amount of attention

See this stats page. The reason is because this blog came into being within the last 5 days. The dirty laundry and skeletons in the closet of the so-called "Gucci Gang" (a group of "high society" people in Manila) is being exposed by a swindled Australian. Tina Tinio is supposedly a member of this "gang." --seav (talk) 16:29, 11 March 2008 (UTC)

Too bad the blogger chickened out because of death threats "kuno". That would have been our version of Gossip Girl. Starczamora (talk) 07:53, 13 March 2008 (UTC)

By the way, the Gucci Gang controversy article is up. Starczamora (talk) 09:05, 16 March 2008 (UTC)
Wow. That article you started will certainly stress the reliable sources guideline. Of the references you used, the libel legal discussion seems to be the only one that might be unquestionable. The others (except the Chikatime refs) are opinion columns, that may or may not have editorial oversight (e.g., Manila Times disclaims that the opinions of their columnists [e.g., Malu Fernandez] are their own and does not reflect that of the paper). --seav (talk) 14:28, 16 March 2008 (UTC)
As long as the opinions are stated were it came from it is safe. --Howard the Duck 15:17, 16 March 2008 (UTC)

Dealing with persistent vandals who don't read comments nor their talk pages?

The user 126.60.243.104 keeps adding unsourced content to various Philippine-related pages. I've reverted his edits a number of times and left a reason why his changes were edited, but he doesn't seem to read the history, nor the warnings on his talk page. Attempts to have this user blocked are usually left with a message that he hasn't been active over the past few hours. WPPhilippines: Articles of unclear notability

Hello,

there are currently 19 articles in the scope of this project which are tagged with notability concerns. I have listed them here. (Note: this listing is based on a database snapshot of 12 March 2008 and may be slightly outdated.)

I would encourage members of this project to have a look at these articles, and see whether independent sources can be added, whether the articles can be merged into an article of larger scope, or possibly be deleted. Any help in cleaning up this backlog is appreciated. For further information, see Wikipedia:WikiProject Notability.

If you have any questions, please leave a message on the Notability project page or on my personal talk page. (I'm not watching this page however.) Thanks! --B. Wolterding (talk) 16:24, 23 March 2008 (UTC)

Question & Suggestion

Why is it that Philippines has no List of Philippine-related topics navigational template like in Australia? Like this:

--Joseph Solis in Australia (talk) 09:35, 11 March 2008 (UTC)

Maybe we can adopt the one used at Portal:Philippines (Portal:Philippines/Topics)

Good one but it needs clean-up (too many entries in the history section) and some fixes here and there. --Efe (talk) 11:51, 11 March 2008 (UTC)
This a good one but needs to add other section and the history section must be summarized.--Joseph Solis in Australia (talk) 09:37, 12 March 2008 (UTC)

Questions about translation

(I'll be sure to post this on the Tagalog Wikipedia where it can also get attention. Wikipedians active in the other projects are invited to post this too in their respective village pumps.)

I can foresee that there will be issues on translating quite a few things between English and Philippine languages:

  • Street names, including addresses
  • Building names (ex. Eiffel Tower)
  • Country names

All three are quite contentious in ways where this basically elevates the (silent) translation debate a step higher. All three sets of proper nouns are usually in English, and in Tagalog/Filipino, despite having words that exist to describe them, they are rarely (if ever) used. For example, you would hear Ayala Avenue everywhere, but you will never hear Abenida Ayala in Tagalog or any other Philippine language. The same with the Eiffel Tower, but never the Toreng Eiffel.

With regard to country names, not all countries where there is a corresponding translation to the nationality (i.e. Danes for Danish, Suweko for Swedish, Tay for Thai) have a translation to the country itself (i.e. Dinamarka for Denmark, Suwesya for Sweden, Taylandya for Thailand [translations transliterated from the Spanish]). This is a very peculiar phenomenon upon our linguists who write our dictionaries and we should have some sort of consensus on this.

I agree that we are not all linguists, but at least we should have some consensus on this issue. Hopefully whatever comes out of this can serve as an effective guide not only to us but even to newbies and the like. --Sky Harbor 01:18, 26 March 2008 (UTC)

The language must show dynamism and shouldn't confine itself to its traditional usage, but not to the point of using Taglish. If you have come across some newly published books written in Filipino you'll be surprised to see a lot of English terms which are spelled as it is pronounced in the vernacular. These are mostly books published by the Sentro ng Wikang Filipino, however they use Filipinas instead of Pilipinas, which brings in a myriad of issues. IMHO, it will be convenient to use, what we actually use in the vernacular. --Scorpion prinz (Talk | contribs) 13:08, 29 March 2008 (UTC)
So it is more proper then, per your opinion, to say Ayala Abenyu than Abenida Ayala? --Sky Harbor 07:48, 30 March 2008 (UTC)
I'm not really comfortable about "Taglishing" words. Abenida ng Ayala would have been okay. Starczamora (talk) 07:55, 30 March 2008 (UTC)
There are certain categories of words when Tagalicized can be left in its original form as if they were in Spanish. Examples of this include notaryo publiko, agham panlipunan (from Spanish ciencia social) and possibly road names like Abenida Ayala (a prominent example of this should be Calle Anloague/Kalye Anloague in Noli Me Tangere). --Sky Harbor 08:28, 30 March 2008 (UTC)
I am more inclined for the Tagalized/Filipinized Ayala Avenue. But I guess we are already familiar with some Tagalized/Filipinized words like hayskul, andergradweyt, reyp, titser. I don't know if I could write here the portion of the book published by the Sentro ng Wikang Filipino, which gave some guidelines about the adaptation of words into the local language. But as far as it indicated, with regard to scientific terms, they retain the original spelling. --Scorpion prinz (Talk | contribs) 12:22, 30 March 2008 (UTC)
The thing about that is that these features were widely used well until the "Taglish movement". These words have long existed in Tagalog but are rarely used in contemporary usage now because so many people don't know how to use them, or are unaware that those words exist in the first place. --Sky Harbor 14:00, 30 March 2008 (UTC)

OK, so I'm not a fan of those two, but as a WP contributor I'm concerned about the edits that are being posted in their articles, since there's so much fanboyism among their supporters, and spreading their fanaticism by adding unnecessary/POV edits there wouldn't be nice. Kim's article for one, has been flagged as resembling a fan site and needs TLC... Any thoughts on this? God Bless and have a nice day... Blake Gripling (talk) 11:41, 27 March 2008 (UTC)

Probably, I can ask my ate if she still has the old newspaper clippings of these love teams. Total 331 522 2361 2376 26 5616

Since the last update in March, we have tagged about 900 articles as part of the Philippine-related articles assessment drive. There are still approximately 3,400 articles left to tag. The bulk tagging of past articles is the first phase of the Assessment department's activities. Thanks to all those who have been active in tagging articles; special mention goes to Lenticel who has tagged the majority of those 900 articles since the last update. Let's continue clear up the backlog, people! :-)

By the way, please go to this section to install a user script that greatly simplifies the tagging. Combine this script with a tabbed browser and you should be able to tag 100 articles in 15 minutes.

Nasaan and mga drop down boxes? --Efe (talk) 08:30, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
Try clearing the browser's cache by force-reloading the page (usually Shift-F5 on most browsers). The drop-down boxes appear just below the article's title on the article's page (not the talk page!). --seav (talk) 08:50, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
Hey seav, can you remove the lists, templates, categories and portals in the unassessed section? It clutters the unassessed page and they might get bigger as more non-mainspace pages are assessed.--Lenticel (talk) 05:15, 8 April 2008 (UTC)
Let's leave it there for the meantime. I still have to ask around how to treat non-mainspace but encyclopedic pages (like portals and normal categories) with regards assessment. For now, let's tackle tagging untagged mainspace articles first. --seav (talk) 07:56, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

Formatting template "Assessed", "Unassessed" and "Total" must not fall under "quality". Who knows how to format this? --Efe (talk) 05:38, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

"Assessed" and "Unassessed" should perhaps be under (or actually next to) Activity or Action (or the like). While "Total" deserves a box of its own? - DaughterofSun (talk) 05:46, 8 April 2008 (UTC)
The statsbox format is fixed across the whole Wikipedia. I can't change it. Furthermore, the original statsbox doesn't have the importance axis so the "assessed" and "unassesses" subtotals are correct for those statsboxes. We should just treat the "unassessed" label in the box as "unqualified" (for quality assessment) and the "assessed" as "qualified". All right? :-) --seav (talk) 07:56, 8 April 2008 (UTC)
Naisip ko nga na widely used and ganyang format. Sana naisip nila... Anyway, as you've said above, lets tag untagged Phil-related arts. The script is now working. Thanks. --Efe (talk) 11:02, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

Technically, they are called "Teks" (from "Text", because each card contains a comic text). So far, I found this. Starczamora (talk) 14:39, 10 April 2008 (UTC)
I found that too and it is a good source as it is both reliable and describes the game's mechanics. However I can't spin an article with one cite alone. We need to find its origin first.--Lenticel (talk) 21:47, 10 April 2008 (UTC)
I remember back in the late 70's and early 80's I used to play with "teks" cards that featured The Longest Day in comics format. Each card would have one or two frames of the story. They came free packaged in candy boxes, usually bubblegum. Also in the 80's, I recall Bazooka bubblegum had free "teks" cards with comics of their mascot, Bazooka Man, if I recall his name correctly. Later the same bubblegum brand came out with Michael Jackson trading cards, but these were larger, about the same size as today's baseball cards. The closest equivalent of these cards today I think are Trading cards. — • Kurt Guirnela •Feedback 03:58, 11 April 2008 (UTC)
Suggestion: Perhaps, this can be added to Traditional Filipino games, in the meantime...? So that it will already be "documented" here. - DaughterofSun (talk) 03:34, 15 April 2008 (UTC)
In the provinces, I remember kids playing with small versions of X-Men era trading cards using what seemed to be similar rules (I was forbidden from playing teks as a child myself, so I'm not actually sure what the rules are), so when trading cards came along I thought that was the official name for what we had, all the time, referred to as teks. Hmmm....Alternativity (talk) 04:55, 15 April 2008 (UTC)

I find this article weird. It states that there are only 27,000 native speakers of English in the Philippines and this is based on Bro. Andrew Gonzalez' oft-cited language paper which in turn cites the 1995 Census. There seems to be a confusion regarding the terms native language, first language, second language in the context of a significantly bilingual Filipino population. --seav (talk) 05:45, 18 April 2008 (UTC)

I think that number is correct. I'd imagine those 27,000 might be Americans born here. --Howard the Duck 07:39, 18 April 2008 (UTC)
Well, I consider myself a native speaker of English. I started learning English before I even started schooling. I imagine that a lot of other people that grew up in urban areas are the same. I don't know how the census questionnaire goes and I suspect that they only consider just one "local" language (e.g., Tagalog) to be the native language and didn't consider the possiblity of true bilingualism. --seav (talk) 08:17, 18 April 2008 (UTC)
It depends on what the people answer on the census. --Howard the Duck 10:15, 18 April 2008 (UTC)
I was around when the 2000 census was taken, I was the one interviewed. With regard to the language they'd emphasize on the household language. --Scorpion prinz (Talk | contribs) 12:47, 19 April 2008 (UTC)

Its official English name Malacañan lacks the g for the benefit of American officials who had difficulty pronouncing it. Added this, I swear I read it somewhere in grade school. Source appreciated. Uthanc (talk) 10:04, 27 March 2008 (UTC)

The Malacanang logo everytime there is a press conference omits the letter "G". --Howard the Duck 10:20, 27 March 2008 (UTC)
I think the bit about the "American officials who had difficulty pronouncing it" is the one that needs sourcing, not the minus G part. --seav (talk) 03:11, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
Just removed "American officials had difficulty pronouncing -ng". Wish I could find a source... Uthanc (talk) 04:04, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
Americans rename the Malacañang to Malacañan because Americans especially English-speaking Americans can't pronounce the ng in nasal way and English language, the language of the Americans doesn't have a digraph of ng.--Joseph Solis in Australia (talk) 06:51, 29 March 2008 (UTC)
Isn't the ng in Malacañang the velar nasal? If so, isn't this the same sound as the final sound in the English verb suffix -ing? If so, then they shouldn't have any problem pronouncing it. --seav (talk) 06:55, 31 March 2008 (UTC)
Yes, it is the velar nasal. --Sky Harbor 15:10, 31 March 2008 (UTC)

I found a source (Ambeth Ocampo) confirming that the "g" was omitted because Americans could not pronounce it, and also other details about the etymology. I'll be integrating it into the article. Anyo Niminus (talk) 23:33, 20 April 2008 (UTC)

Bataan pronunciation

At the top of the Bataan Death March article there's a note on pronunciation. It says Tagalog speakers say "Bata-An", and in English it's "Baaa-Tan" or "Bat-tan". Is this accurate? TheCoffee (talk) 19:34, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

I think it is. Oliver North pronounced it as "Baaa-tan". --Howard the Duck 05:56, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
I've heard it pronounced "Ba-taaan" by non-tagalog-speaking english-speakers. Click the speaker symbols here, here, and here for differing pronunciations. -- Boracay Bill (talk) 01:33, 13 April 2008 (UTC)

Question... why is the alternative pronunciation necessary at all? Last I checked, the Filipino pronunciation of Filipino words was considered standard. I don't recall any Philippine policy that says there can be a standard foreign pronunciation of a Filipino word...Alternativity (talk) 17:50, 20 April 2008 (UTC)

Philippine policy does not apply here. See WP:MOS#Foreign terms. www.dictionary.com returns three hits for Bataan, so I'd say that the Common usage in English guideline there would apply. -- Boracay Bill (talk) 23:39, 20 April 2008 (UTC)

Concerns about the Batangas provincial flag

I question the fair use tag on this flag since it's not a logo anyway. Here's my point (from Wikipedia:Non-free content)

1. Cover art: Cover art from various items, for identification only in the context of critical commentary of that item (not for identification without critical commentary). [Does not qualify]
2. Team and corporate logos: For identification. [Does not qualify]
3. Stamps and currency: For identification of the stamp or currency, not its subject. [Does not qualify]
4. Other promotional material: Posters, programs, billboards, ads. For critical commentary. [Does not qualify]
5. Film and television screen shots: For critical commentary and discussion of the cinema and television. [Does not qualify]
6. Screenshots from software products: For critical commentary. [Does not qualify]
7. Paintings and other works of visual art: For critical commentary, including images illustrative of a particular technique or school. [Does not qualify]
8. Images with iconic status or historical importance: As subjects of commentary. [Could be, but disputed]

Please do something about this. -iaNLOPEZ1115 · TaLKBaCK · Vandalize it 13:58, 20 April 2008 (UTC)

Official release. Final results of the latest Census of Population (POPCEN 2007) conducted by the National Statistics Office (NSO) placed the Philippine population at 88,574,614 persons as of August 1, 2007. Said results down to barangay level were made official with the signing by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo of Proclamation No. 1489 on April 16, 2008. --Exec8 (talk) 20:10, 16 April 2008 (UTC)

Wait! Wait! Wait! Wait! Let's try to go about this systematically. We need to have a worklist and we should not ditch the 2000 census (it's valuable info for historical purposes). Let's create a Tambayan task force for this. --seav (talk) 22:14, 16 April 2008 (UTC)
Seav, I am now already changed the population of Cebu based on the latest data from NSO. municipality by municipality and city by city in Cebu province alone.--Joseph Solis in Australia (talk) 08:48, 18 April 2008 (UTC)
Can't we have something like the following paragraph so that the 2000 Census info is not deleted and provides more information?
"Based on the August 2007 census, Mandaue City has a total population of 318,575 people. This figure is up by 58,847 from 259,728 persons recorded in the May 2000 census, giving an annual growth rate of 2.96%2.86% during the 7-year period--significantly higher than the national average of 2.04%. If this growth rate were maintained, Mandaue would double its population in 24 years."
Now that's encyclopedic information. We can couple that with Scorpion prinz' table below to provide a very nice demographics section in the articles. --seav (talk) 10:17, 18 April 2008 (UTC)
There is a mistake in this example. The growth rate should be 2.86% and not 2,96%. (318,575/259,728 ^(1/7.25)). Magalhães (talk) 11:02, 25 April 2008 (UTC)
Ah, you're right. I discounted the fact that the census reference dates are on different months. I double-checked with the NSO and they use the same 7.25 year divisor to compute 2.04% growth. --seav (talk) 11:32, 25 April 2008 (UTC)
Did you know that combining the population of Metro Manila, Laguna, Rizal, Cavite and Bulacan or Mega Manila is 21,994,694 beating the population of Australia of 21,660,000? --Exec8 (talk) 02:51, 17 April 2008 (UTC)

Good thing you brought that up. I have been slowly cleaning up and verifying all the articles included in the Battles of the Philippine-American War list. I can for certain say that there is no such battle as the Battle of San Fabian; Wheaton simply landed in San Fabian - the major engagement would happen when they proceeded to San Jacinto. I therefore redirected accordingly. I have verified the Bud Dajo battles; they did happen (most of the material comes from bakbakan.com and their electronic version of the book, Jungle Patrol). I'll continue checking those articles out. — • Kurt Guirnela •Feedback 02:11, 26 April 2008 (UTC)

Noted. Will do so as soon as everything is on the up-and-up. =) — • Kurt Guirnela •Feedback 12:56, 26 April 2008 (UTC)
Ok, here's the skinny on these suspicious articles. Whoever created them definitely read this online article: 'Like a mad tiger': fighting Islamic warriors in the Philippines 100 years ago: exactly a century ago, America began a war against one of its fiercest foes—the Moros of the southern Philippines - United States troops battle against Islamic Moros from 1902 to 1913. Every obscure campaign and skirmish is mentioned in passing here. What Kennethjaensss did was to create a new article every time he saw the word "battle". There are very few online references to the Battle of the Malalag River and the Battle of Siranaya, but they seem to be valid encounters (but of course the Moros were not led by Gregorio del Pilar, for pete's sake... and Aguinaldo had a navy? lolz!) So is the Battle of Taraca; I plugged a few refs in that article. The Bud Dajo and Bud Bagsak battles are valid too. The Hassan Uprising has many Google hits, but not much detail. The only article I would vote to nominate for Afd is Wood's March Around Lake Lanao; its not a formal campaign, and it's even enclosed in quotes in that article link given above, indicating it's just the author's artistic license coming into play and not a named campaign. — • Kurt Guirnela •Feedback 13:32, 27 April 2008 (UTC)
I stubified Siranaya and Malalag River and will afd Wood's march.--Lenticel (talk) 23:30, 27 April 2008 (UTC)

I have plans to rename the article Filipino Gangs as the article focus's on gangs not from the Philippines, but any gang of Filipino ethnicity. Any objections, please reply. I intend to do it soon, but i want your opinions.

Their is a possibility of splitting the article into 2 separate articles. Filipino-American Gangs and also maintain Gangs in the Philippines. This is because of the large amount if Fil-Am gangs in the U.S, i feel it deserves a separate article. But this could just be a waste, could simply "Filipino Gangs" be better? any ideas? please reply. The article is bland and needs a cleanup, so that is also intended after the rename. thanks Lovebus 13:38, 27 April 2008 (UTC)

Cebuano interwiki

Cebuano speakers call their language Sinugbuanon instead of Cebuano right? I just noticed that the interwiki for Cebuano displays Cebuano instead of the native name of the language which shoul be Sinugbuanon. I think the interwikis at the left should label ceb link as Sinugbuanon since it's the native name, just as es links displays as Espanol at the interwiki sidebar, right? -- Felipe Aira 11:40, 28 April 2008 (UTC)

Cebuano speakers most commonly call their language Cebuano. I think "Sinugboanon" is also correct but archaic, and if "Sinugboanon" was used in it's place many native Cebuano speakers might not as easily recognize it. I may be wrong about this though. TheCoffee (talk) 17:19, 28 April 2008 (UTC)

Virtual meeting

For comments regarding the Tambayan virtual meeting.--Lenticel (talk) 02:51, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

From what is said in the original discussion, I think there should be no number (Manila 4) since, if ever that it gets to become routine, next thing we would know is that we got something like Meetup 100 or something like that. What we should be discussing here in order to get that working are:
  1. Software - YM or WLM or something else?
  2. Video or text (chat) - Would the virtual meetups be video conferences or a simple text chat? Although video would mean headaches for people with slow connexions.
  3. Time/schedule - This should be a time when most people would most likely be online, should not be during the day, the time when people would most likely be at work or at school, and most preferably a Saturday or a Sunday.
Do you have any opinions about these people? -- Felipe Aira 11:49, 21 April 2008 (UTC)
  1. Software - YM is good as it is easy to download, software friendly and is available on computer shops
  2. Video or Text - Text, not all cafes or computer owners have web cams
  3. Time - Weekend Afternoon or between 6 to 9 pm. Saturday is preferable.--Lenticel (talk) 14:34, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

How are we to communicate to each other? Since we would most likely be putting our on ym adresses at one Wikipedia: page to know who can belong to the conference. That page if created could be a tool for spamming. We need an advice from someone who has some experience about this. -- Felipe Aira 14:39, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

Has this been done by other notice boards or chapters, or are we the very first? -- Felipe Aira 02:32, 22 April 2008 (UTC)

Perhaps we are the first. --Sky Harbor 12:30, 23 April 2008 (UTC)

Since we have a lot of time to prepare, it's like a week from now. I think we should be preparing a list now of whom to expect, so as those who are interested in coming can also add their adresses to their contacts list. And yet we still don't have a secure way to share our own e-mail adresses, without having been susceptible to spammers. -- Felipe Aira 13:30, 23 April 2008 (UTC)

Now how can we solve that, I think I've found the solution. Go create a yahoo address, if you don't got one. And join the PhilWiki (link above); your acount needs approval though. Check out the files list (that's in the left sidebar), and go edit the file created by me. List your ym address there; don't worry I'ved put a simple instruction at the file. And voila! And oh, don't worry, nobody can read that file except for PhilWiki members, which are Wikipedia Tambays. I certainly hope that that helps! -- Felipe Aira 13:30, 23 April 2008 (UTC)
I think you should have made a database directory instead so that we don't have to constantly upload the text directory. --Sky Harbor 00:26, 24 April 2008 (UTC)

Objectives and Agenda

The virtual meetup will happen on May 3, 2008 at 8:00 PM Philippine Time. This will accomodate our regional partners like in Cebu and Northern Luzon and overseas like in Australia and the United States. Our objective is to get a bigger audience and allow some participants who are either in a busy schedule or wish to keep their identity safe. One of the things we would like to discuss are:

  • Status of the organization
    • Whether to push forward as a formal Philippine organization or status quo
  • LGU project
    • Population (barangay breakdown, growth) through census.gov.ph
    • GPS location
    • Seal (flags less priority)
    • Free image of a landmark
    • Local chief executive through lcp.org.ph, lmp.org.ph, lpp.gov.ph
    • Size (land)
    • Regional and provincial maps with links
  • Rules on Philippine-related images (pictures, seals and logos) and the use of the fair-use tag.
  • Philippine Language Project (Wiktionary.org)
    • Tagalog, Cebuano, Ilocano, Bicol
  • Philippine Book Project (wikibooks.org)
    • Initial target to OFWs and high school students
  • Philippine Law Project (wikisource.org)
    • Laws, implementing rules and regulations, executive orders and ordinances
  • Philippine Article Assessment Project
    • Notability, Stub, Class A,B articles, featured articles

So prepare your Yahoo Messenger. I am looking forward to get a live interaction with you and to push for better understanding and cooperation. --Exec8 (talk) 13:42, 26 April 2008 (UTC)

Well these are just suggested topics to discuss. For me, the most likely topics that will push through are the LGU project and organizational structure issues. I personally like to go with the YM especially its been 5-6 years since I last use the IRC. --Exec8 (talk) 22:31, 28 April 2008 (UTC)
I, for one, don't quite know the ins and outs of IRC, so unless it has some unusually redeeming feature, I'd probably vote (although "voting is evil." hehe) for YM. :-D Alternativity (talk) 19:59, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

Informing the Philippine-language projects

I wonder who will take the cudgels of informing all the Philippine-language projects about the virtual meetup. Since it is virtual, it should be that we will get more than 6-8 people (the current average size of a physical meetup) involved. --Sky Harbor 21:41, 27 April 2008 (UTC)

I'll inform Tagalog, and try also Cebuano with the little knowledge I know about that language. -- Felipe Aira 03:39, 28 April 2008 (UTC)
Perhaps it would be better if it's in sitenotice. -- Felipe Aira 03:39, 28 April 2008 (UTC)

Ready or nat, something should be done about these, at least the name. I've looked and there seem to be no reliable or acceptable sources that say his real name is "Reynaldo" except blogs and his official(?) site. I guess it is, though we tend to use unconventional spellings/combinations (Jhun, Jennylyn). Does coverage by local media (Inquirer, GMA) make him notable enough for inclusion? Uthanc (talk) 20:21, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

Hmmmm.... the PDI cite in the article calls him Renaldo. The GMA cite calls him Reynaldo. -- Boracay Bill (talk) 00:03, 30 April 2008 (UTC)

Standstill discussions at Tagalog

Hey Tambayan people, the Tagalog Wikipedia really needs your comments on stadstill discussions back there that has not yet closed for many months now.

  1. Four Two RfA's. (tl:Wikipedia:Nominasyon para sa Tagapangasiwa ng Wikipedia Tagalog)

Should (or may) Fil-Americans be included in the scope of WikiProject: Tambayan Philippines? I noticed that Fil-Am singer Jasmine Trias is, while actor Rob Schneider, NFL quarterback Roman Gabriel or Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra are not. --Anyo Niminus (talk) 00:15, 30 April 2008 (UTC)

I beleive we should. They are still "one of us".--Lenticel (talk) 02:25, 30 April 2008 (UTC)
Indeed they should! I concur, sirs. Alternativity (talk) 09:49, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
But most of them are of generally lower importance (with respect to Assessment) than pure Filipinos. If their Filipino roots are simply incidental to their being or if their ancestry is less than 1/2 then I don't think we need to really tag them. I guess Enrique Iglesias and his siblings need to be tagged? :-) --seav (talk) 09:58, 5 May 2008 (UTC)

New Articles of Incorporation

Alright...per the now-concluded meetup, the ALL-NEW, SEC-COMPLIANT Articles of Incorporation of Wikimedia Philippines is now available. You may preview the document here. A Tagalog translation is also available, and hopefully others can translate it into the other Philippine languages. --Sky Harbor 20:51, 4 May 2008 (UTC)

Do we need to re-approve it? --Jojit (talk) 01:53, 6 May 2008 (UTC)
Yes, it needs to be re-approved. It is a completely different document from the previous AoI. --Sky Harbor 02:05, 6 May 2008 (UTC)

Cebu Meet-up and Participation in the Open Source Summit

I moved the discussion to Wikipedia talk:Meetup/Cebu 1. --Jojit (talk) 12:01, 6 May 2008 (UTC)

Here's a surprise!

Here's a surprise I've prepared for everyone here in the Tambayan. I've requested Kasuga if a Wikipe-tan in baro't saya can be made. The result is at the left. I never told you about this because I've intended this request as a surprise for everyone here. So I know you don't expect this. Thank Kasuga for this image. - 上村七美 (Nanami-chan) | talkback | contribs 08:04, 6 May 2008 (UTC)

Can we put this on the main Tambay page?-Lenticel (talk) 08:19, 6 May 2008 (UTC)
Sure! Why not? It is an honor. - 上村七美 (Nanami-chan) | talkback | contribs 08:25, 6 May 2008 (UTC)
Nice huh. --Efe (talk) 08:27, 6 May 2008 (UTC)
How about the Tambay Roster page section. I will not do it myself since I might mess it up. Better call someone who works with templates.--Lenticel (talk) 08:30, 6 May 2008 (UTC)

When it comes to the main page, it's your call. - 上村七美 (Nanami-chan) | talkback | contribs 08:34, 6 May 2008 (UTC)

I've asked ViperSnake151 to help affix Wikipetan to the tambay roster.--Lenticel (talk) 09:02, 6 May 2008 (UTC)
Looks like he placed the image at the main header than the Tambay roster. That's OK because I think it's better at the main header as a welcome mat. - 上村七美 (Nanami-chan) | talkback | contribs 11:54, 6 May 2008 (UTC)

  • Topics : Suggested topics stated above.

See Yah! --Exec8 (talk) 21:53, 1 May 2008 (UTC)

On a side note, I've always found dates confusing, because I usually use YYYYMMDD to help me keep my files' dates more organized (I use notepad a lot). The result is that I usually have trouble distinguishing an MMDDYYYY from a DDMMYYYY. Is there some international standard date format custom that I should know about that will relieve my confusion? To make this more "on topic"... may I also suggest using the Month's given name rather than it's number whenever we announce meetings? Hehe. It would be really helpful, I think, for those of us who are dating system confused. Alternativity (talk) 20:05, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

Day-month is more common in Europe while month-day is more common in the United States. In the Philippines, both are quite commonplace, although month-day is more prevalent in English usage (in Filipino usage, the preferred format is supposed to be day-month, but many people commonly use month-day). --Sky Harbor 00:30, 3 May 2008 (UTC)
YYYYMMDD is actually an ISO standard format. I personally use YYYY-MM-DD (also part of that ISO standard) when I want a compact date format. --seav (talk) 02:00, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

People it's already 20:00 (that's 8:00). Let's get it started. -- Felipe Aira 11:52, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

Dugaya ui. Muoli na lang ko ani sa balay ron wala pa makastart. Mga pinoy gyud. =) --Efe (talk) 11:59, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

I'm already online. But three Wikipedians are on "I'm on SMS" status in YM. --seav (talk) 12:17, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

Kaawaan natin sila. Hope they can get online. I did not wake up super-early for this. --Sky Harbor 12:26, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

Result

I would like to thank the participants in the said YM chat conference. There were many wikipedians joined that forum and it was beyond my expectation. The participant list and the actual result a summary of the said discussion will be posted later by SkyHarbor. It has been agreed upon that the YM chat will continue every other Saturday at 8:00 PM (20:00) Philippine Time/ 12:00 UTC(GMT). Therefore the 2nd conference will be done on May 17, 2008. Physical meetups will be suspended until further notice or until a consensus was made in this forum or on the YM conference. Cebu will be an exception. The first meetup will be discussed in the meetup page and/or the Cebuano wiki discussion page. --Exec8 (talk) 07:42, 4 May 2008 (UTC)

I think there's a chance we could be part of the presentors or booths or something similar... what do you think? I know the organizers... We could present a formal letter... something which shows that we have some significance... like the no of Philippine related articles, number of wiki projects started, etc...--Nino Gonzales (talk) 09:54, 4 May 2008 (UTC)
Wait a minute...I said I wouldn't post the transcripts. I wasn't here for the entire duration! --Sky Harbor 14:58, 4 May 2008 (UTC)
Er... I do recall Sky saying that. I don't think we agreed on this. Who WAS there for the whole duration, anyway? Alternativity (talk) 09:48, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
I think none of us has the complete transcripts since I just found out that the default configuration of the Yahoo! Messenger is to be recording the chats/messages however it would also be deleting them after one has signed out. Don't worry I'll record the transcripts next time since I changed the settings of my YM now. -- Felipe Aira 09:54, 5 May 2008 (UTC)

Result of the First PhilWiki Chat

  • Wikimedia Philippines - removed the one million peso provision in the Articles of Incorporation.
    • CORRECTION: This provision was changed (per discussion of the Corporation Code) so that whatever money we raise shall be the authorized capital of WMPH until amended. --Sky Harbor 01:11, 6 May 2008 (UTC)
  • Tagalog Wikipedia front page changed to Felipe Aira and AnakngAraw's design.
  • LGU project will be revived to focus initially on Population (Data, Growth and Density)
  • No clear agreement on rules on image uploads (especially in Tagalog Wikipedia).
  • Whether Tagalog should follow standards set up by the KWF; no consensus.I added this one since it is clear that we spent some time, a significant portion of time, just talking about this Filipino-Pilipino-Tagalog never-ending debate. -- Felipe Aira 04:56, 6 May 2008 (UTC)
  • Other suggested topics were not discussed.
  • YM chat will continue on a regular basis every other Saturday at 8:00 PM (20:00) Philippine Time/ 12:00 UTC(GMT). Therefore the 2nd conference will be done on May 17, 2008.
  • Manila Physical meetups will be suspended until further notice or until a consensus was made in this forum or on the YM conference.

The person with the "mae" in his username is Efe. MAE is his initials. --seav (talk) 08:56, 6 May 2008 (UTC)
Wooh! Thanks kuya for clarifying. I really thought that they're referring to me. Yeah guys. MAE stands for Mark Anthony Efe. To those who do not know behind my username here in WP yet, especially to Lenticel, Efe is my surname. --Efe (talk) 09:10, 6 May 2008 (UTC)
"Jojit" is a masculine name, maybe your thinking of "Jojie"? Exec8 had also been mistakenly identified as a female before, I think by Lenticel. --Jojit (talk) 11:46, 6 May 2008 (UTC)

Infobox as in just like the one on the upper right "Previous" and "Next" for PhilWiki Chat. --Exec8 (talk) 12:34, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

Region numbering

Apparently, Metro Manila, the CAR and the ARMM are regions that are numbered by the DILG, and Caraga is not in its proper numbering place:

  • Metro Manila: Region XIII
  • CAR: Region XIV
  • ARMM: Region XV
  • Caraga: Region XVI

Should we proceed with re-numbering the regions? --Sky Harbor 20:45, 6 May 2008 (UTC)

Not yet (I think). It's too confusing, since most of the people are already confused with the regional numbering of certain Mindanao regions. Let's wait and see (for now). -iaNLOPEZ1115 · TaLKBaCK · Vandalize it 00:28, 7 May 2008 (UTC)
We're following the National Statistical Coordination Board's Philippine Standard Geographic Code. Caraga is Region XIII and NCR, ARMM, and CAR have no numbers. --seav (talk) 01:54, 7 May 2008 (UTC)
Well, I find it odd that the DILG would have their own numbering system, the NSCB has their own system, and perhaps there are also other region numbering systems. Which one is considered more canonical? --Sky Harbor 12:08, 7 May 2008 (UTC)
NSCB has the authority in terms of statistical standards that all government agencies should follow [2][3], therefore PSGC is official and more canonical. --Jojit (talk) 09:27, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
Dangnabbit, this government is a mess. Can't even have consistent nomenclature. !($&#(&$!) Sorry, I know it's not very productive, but I'm turning red with frustration...Alternativity (talk) 18:14, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

Benjamin "Kokoy" Romualdez

Does anyone one were I can find biographical data of Benjamin "Kokoy" Romualdez, the brother of Imelda Marcos? He was an influential man during the Marcos period, but I can't seem to find simple things like date and place of birth. I found that he was the governor of Leyte and ambassador to the US, Saudi-Arabia and China, but no information on when this exactly was. I did however find a lot of information about court cases against him for acquiring wealth during the Marcos period. Magalhães (talk) 07:26, 7 May 2008 (UTC)

September, 24 1936 according to this site no idea if this is reliable though.--Lenticel (talk) 09:21, 7 May 2008 (UTC)
I also found that site, but I don't think it is correct, because have read in the Book "Imelda Marcos, The steelbutterfly of the Philippines", that their mother died shortly after having here sixth child in 1937 or 1938, and it also stated that Benjamin was the second child after Imelda. This would be biological impossible ;) Magalhães (talk) 11:42, 7 May 2008 (UTC)

Lance...

Ginoo... just a warning guys, before you take a look at this... it's a (tagalog) gay boy's unabashed journal... --Nino Gonzales (talk) 08:31, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

yah. He's tagalog. Binasa ko nga eh. Maganda. Haha. --Efe (talk) 08:35, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
It is, but of course, as Wikipedians, we treat such stuff as unencyclopedic - in other words, vandalism... That journal of his should be posted elsewhere, not here... Blake Gripling (talk) 08:59, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
Anyway, the article is currently notable, edited mostly by fans, and that edit was reverted outrighly. No worries. And besides, its an IP. --Efe (talk) 09:02, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

The content is not even that appropriate for most blogs (LJ would disapprove of this for sure, Blogger has the "report inappropriate content" feature). This would be better on an i.ph blog. --Sky Harbor 16:08, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

Discussion of finances

We need to discuss the following in preparation for the incorporation of WMPH:

  • Which bank to open with
  • How much money we need
  • Other business

The pertinent discussion is here. --Sky Harbor 20:59, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

I prefer BDO over Landbank. Putting stuff on a gov't bank isn't a very good idea.--Lenticel (talk) 14:54, 9 May 2008 (UTC)

I'd like BDO because they are open on weekends, but Landbank has a lower minimum balance requirement than the other banks. That's with consideration that it is the fourth-largest bank in the Philippines. Then again, I maintain my accounts with BDO. --Sky Harbor 15:14, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
I don't think we'd have a problem with a GOCC, just as long as we can easily open a corporate checking account. --Scorpion prinz (Talk | contribs) 18:23, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
I wish. Haha. Anyway, for everyone, here's a comparison of some of the banks that we can open with (and their minimum balance requirements, of course):
  • Landbank: P20,000 (lowest)
  • Banco de Oro: P25,000 (open on weekends)
  • Allied Bank: P25,000
  • Security Bank: P25,000
  • Metrobank: P35,000
  • UCPB: P40,000
  • RCBC: P50,000 (highest)
  • BPI: P50,000 (highest)
Also, how will we accept donations? And by the way, I hope your pledges are still valid. --Sky Harbor 16:30, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
My pledge still stands.. --Scorpion prinz (Talk | contribs) 17:55, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

Eastwood City Population

Does anyone have statistics on the population of Eastwood City?

1) What is the composition (i.e. residents, employees, corporate, tourists, young, old)? 2) What is the projected population at completion?

Or can anyone point me to the right direction?

Thanks.

Curilan (talk) 14:35, 11 May 2008 (UTC)

My best bet is you either ask Megaworld or you check which barangays make up Eastwood City, then combine their populations together. Or ask QC City Hall. --Sky Harbor 15:20, 11 May 2008 (UTC)
Eastwood City is within Barangay Bagumbayan, Quezon City. It's not a political unit (referring to Eastwood City), hence it will be difficult to estimate its population. --Scorpion prinz (Talk | contribs) 01:54, 12 May 2008 (UTC)
Then I stand by my point: ask Megaworld. --Sky Harbor 02:14, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

WMPH: Moving forward (a pseudo-manifesto)

If campaigning isn't enough to stoke interest in Wikimedia Philippines, a pseudo-manifesto should do it. A copy is available here. Likewise, I will provide a Tagalog translation, and people are free to translate it into other Philippine languages. --Sky Harbor 20:16, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

  • Cebu Meetup
  • Wikimedia Philippines
    • Articles of Incorporation is already posted in this meta site. For additional inputs visit this link.
    • Bank account - still deciding to what to choose. Type of account: Interest-bearing Current Account
      • Landbank: based on this site. It has an advantage as does not require a certificate from the SEC and they accept groups using the term "CORPORATION IN THE PROCESS OF INCORPORATION", as well as it has a more spread-out branch network that can cater to potential members in more outlying provincial areas (in some areas, Landbank is the only major bank). However, it has a smaller branch network (300+ branches), is subject to the same schedule as a regular bank (Monday-Friday, 9:00 am-3:00 pm PST) and, as we all know, it's a GOCC.
      • Banco de Oro has an advantage in terms of having a larger branch network (695 and counting), availability (weekends and after work hours) and deposit safety (can deposit money in SM malls). However, it does not have branches outside major cities in areas outside Metro Manila, and we will need to verify if this bank offers the same term "corporation in the process of incorporation". If not, SEC registration needs to be accomplished first.
      • Need to raise amount to deposit. As discussed in the AoI forum, If Landbank is selected P20,000 needs to be deposited. If its Banco de Oro, its P25,000.
    • Corporate Name.
    • Roadmap of creating an organization is shown on this site. But we will stop at step 6 and go for DSWD registration as step 7 and BIR taxpayer registration for step 8.
    • The principal office of WMPH will be based in the City of Manila.
  • Public Domain and Fair Use Issue
    • It has been found that uploading images from Philippine government websites, though its a work of the government which is public domain, can be questioned due to lack of the "Terms of Use" policy link. To add more confusion an overwhelming majority of all National government and LGU websites use a tag "Copyright 2008" or "All Rights Reserved 2008". It is highly recommended for websites to include this website link to avoid plagiarism by some outlets like book publishers, print, TV media companies. If they wish to open the site for public domain, they should drop the "Copyright" or "All Rights Reserved" tag and display "Public Domain" and will be free-for-all use. But if they wish to add restrictions over public domain, they should provide a "Terms of Use" link. A detailed discussion on U.S. public domain is posted on http://www.cendi.gov/publications/04-4website_policy.html
    • Due to an absence of an executive order or a law that will define the "Terms of Use" policy, this community will never use the "Philippine Public Domain" tag for images, documents, and multimedia sourced from government websites and fair use tag plus a fair use rationale and source link will be placed on the summary line. "Philippine Public Domain" will only be applicable for independent website who digitized any philippine publication printed before 1958.
    • Efforts are underway to look for ways to lobby lawmakers and/or government executives to look into the public domain provision in the Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines.
  • LGU Project
    • No discussion in particular due to absence of resource users like seav (no response in chat) and scorpion_prinz (offline)

Hello folks,

The Philippine Wikipedia Community will be holding its 1st Meet-up in Cebu City (the fourth one in the Philippines) on June 23-24, 2008. This coincides with the first Philippine Open Source Summit, also to be held in Cebu. The Philippine Wikipedia Community is an Implementing Partner of the Open Source Summit. We invite you to join us in this event. If you are in the IT or IT-enabled services industry, this would be a great opportunity to meet people from the 4th best outsourcing city in the world. This is also a good excuse to visit our beautiful beaches :)

If you're interested in joining the Wikipedia meet-up, please join our discussion. You can register for the Open Source Summit here. If you would like some assistance with local accomodations, you may email User:Bentong Isles.

WP:PINOY --Nino Gonzales (talk) 08:33, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

Gerald Gonzalez, again...

OK, we've warned him several times, he sock-puppeted, and now, he's harassing me at YouTube, with derogatory, anti-WP:CIVIL messages against me. I've blocked him from contacting me, but still, he's harassing me, and I've reported him at YT but the admins there didn't seem to respond. Any suggestions? Can you guys please ban him for good? God Bless and have a nice day... Blake Gripling (talk) 10:52, 7 May 2008 (UTC)

It depends on the severity of the issue. What is it about, first? Perhaps some of the Pinoy admins can act (and quickly). --Sky Harbor 12:09, 7 May 2008 (UTC)
His fanboyism of Angel Locsin, that's all. His fanboyism with the actress led him to do persistent POV pushing, using multiple usernames... Blake Gripling (talk) 00:30, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
Ehhh...this is why I wish there was a concrete policy on fanboyism (there is, but there should be one specifically for the Philippine community since fanboyism is that bad here among Filipino contributors). I'll see what I can do...the admins usually read this, so they should be able to act. I'm not an admin on the English Wikipedia, although if it were the Tagalog Wikipedia, then that's a different story ;). --Sky Harbor 00:49, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
Agreed. There are times where I get so pissed off at teeny-boppers who are so fanboyish at, let's say Kim Chiu and/or Gerald Anderson that they would do anything just to express their fannish love for their idols, one of which involves adding unnecessary, fancrufty POV edits and/or personal opinion about the article's subject - akala nila kasi, hindi porket free encyclopedia ang WP eh OK lang mag-dagdag ng kung ano ano tungkol kay Kim at Gerald - ayan, na-block tuloy... Blake Gripling (talk) 06:45, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

We're quite lucky. Look at the edits at the Jonas Borhters and Miley Cyrus articles & talkpages. They'll dwarf "our" unknown fanboys anyday. If not, we'll have to nominate another Pinoy Wikipedian in here (the English Wikipedia) just to complement TheCoffee (and keep those nasty fanboys out of editing "seryosong" articles).

Do you want to go to the Admins' Noticeboard day by day, just for nothing, or are you going to get a RfA so you can send the message that I mean fancruft-made stupidity by unknown fanboys (and fangirls) is not allowed!

Sure, I can have a big crush on Rihanna. But that alone can't make me write up fancruft on her article (or even on her article's talkpage)! We all love to "glorify" the people (or group of people) we love (whether in real life or just fiction). Or even bash them, as some Wikipedians and unknown users did to the "Crank That (Soulja Boy)" article and talkpage. but we have a duty of maintaining Wikipedia as a great source of information, not as a fan site, nor as a personal site!

I WISH THAT THEY CAN JUST READ "WHAT WIKIPEDIA IS NOT". I'd like to bash them here, but the rules here don't allow me that kinda thing.

Postscript: That part about Rihanna being my crush is complete bollocks. Napapadamay pa din siya diyan. =iaNLOPEZ1115 · TaLKBaCK · Vandalize it 09:29, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

Howard, are you talking to me about that? (Seriously, my account ain't compromised.) -iaNLOPEZ1115 · TaLKBaCK · Vandalize it 02:19, 10 May 2008 (UTC) If you're talking about another Filipino Wikipedian, then it's another story altogether.
I was referring to Blake but this is should raise concern for everybody. --Howard the Duck 04:39, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
Nope. Besides, whether it's inside or outside of Wikipedia, there are times that I get pissed off at those fanboys who are sooooooo into with Kim and Gerald or whoever that is... Blake Gripling (talk) 06:02, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
The Kimerald controversy is long-running and spans several Wikipedias (believe me, the Tagalog Wikipedia has this problem too, probably Cebuano too). Fanboyism is not that hard to revert, but it is hard to teach people what Wikipedia is and what it is not. I'd like to see a "Wiki 101" course when WMPH is incorporated as one of its first projects. --Sky Harbor 16:26, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, agreed. Just like what I said earlier, they think WP is everything and it's OK to spill your fanaticism of your fave "love team" here. This is a something that I find rawther crappy, seriously... Blake Gripling (talk) 23:29, 11 May 2008 (UTC)

Can anyone trim down the overly long "Aftermath" section? It's a lot longer than the events of the day per se, you can perhaps blame Floro for that. --Howard the Duck 16:31, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

Help Please

Hi! I was wondering if someone can help me. It seems that the referces that I cited in the article New Bilibid Prison are not showing up as a list at the bottom of the page. Is this normal? I thought it was automatic. If it's not automatic may I ask for some assistance? Thanks!!!! Monzonda c",) 23:23, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

Fixed. Also corrected header indent levels per WP:GTL#Headings_and_paragraphs. The {{cite web}}s are legal now, but could use somefleshing out. I tend to use {{citation}} for nearly everything instead of the various {{cite xxx}} templates, but that's an editor's preference item. -- Boracay Bill (talk) 00:57, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

Wikipedia Community Logo for POSS

POSS is asking for our logo, so they could put it in their website. I made a screenshot of the WMPH home page. It would be great if someone could make a version which follows the official guidelines

Here's the screenshot:

--Nino Gonzales (talk) 03:06, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

Maybe we can incorporate some elements of our flag into the logo? (Just a suggestion) --Scorpion prinz (Talk | contribs) 03:50, 22 May 2008 (UTC)
We can't incorporate any. There's an official guideline. The only thing we can change is the subtext. -- Felipe Aira 04:39, 22 May 2008 (UTC)
Nino Gonzales, Re a version which follows the official guidelines, just for grins I've made one which should be close. It's currently available here. The guidelines specify that the font is GillSans bold or, alternatively, DejaVu Sans. I don't happen to have either of those but I do have Gill Sans MT bold, so I used that. -- Boracay Bill (talk) 04:34, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

Er. I don't think we can use the WMF logo without permission. WMPH is not an approved entity yet. We are simply just a community. --seav (talk) 04:50, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

Correct. If we want to use the logo, we have to fast-track the approval of Wikimedia Philippines as a local chapter of Wikimedia Foundation. --Jojit (talk) 06:52, 22 May 2008 (UTC)
My suggestion is to simply submit a logo that bears word "Wikimedia Philippines" in the font suggested above (or on Times New Roman) or dont submit a logo at all while WMPH is not yet incorporated. It brings to my attention that the community slowly loosing interest in incorporating. There should be an ad-hoc committee who will process the papers for WMPH. But the big problem is... can it be organized? There is a very small number of wikipedians talking about WMPH setup. In that small number, each wikipedian has different commitments. Some of us have jobs, some will go back to school this June, some work at day, some work at night. Some works on a regular shift of 8-10 hours in 4-5 days, some do freelance work. Add physical location. Some of us are in Cebu while others are in Manila.--Exec8 (talk) 07:17, 22 May 2008 (UTC)
We can't use any other font. It's either Gill Sans MT or DejaVu. It's in the Guidelines. -- Felipe Aira 09:17, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

If we cannot use the Wikimedia logo, we can use this image (by TheCoffee) for POSS. --Jojit (talk) 08:02, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

I agree that we should use that for now. And also, I created this fully Wikimedia compliant logos in Inkscape. Variants are in different languages. -- Felipe Aira 09:39, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

Thank goodness we have logos! We're all set for WMPH with these! :D --Sky Harbor 15:30, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

I prefer English version and the Filipinas version as the alternative.--Lenticel (talk) 02:40, 23 May 2008 (UTC)
Exclude hil and krj under Wikimedia Pilipinas logo. Or include fil and bto. --Filipinayzd (talk) 20:37, 23 May 2008 (UTC)
I just did. --Filipinayzd (talk) 14:46, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
Even if Hiligaynon and Kinaray-a are Incubator languages, they are still, for all intents and purposes, considered as WMPH languages since they have active projects. This is regardless of whether or not they have their own Wikipedia because they have not pushed through with interface translation, unlike Bikol. --Sky Harbor 13:35, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

I asked emailed the communications guy of Wikimedia Foundation last week. No reply yet. If we can't use the WMPH logo, I suggest we create something which looks "Wikipedia" rather than Philippine. Take note of the context. In Wikipedia, the sun and banners logo works because we are the Philippine group. In a Filipino gathering, we have to be seen as a Wikipedia group. Any objections--legal, aesthetic, etc--if we use this? --Nino Gonzales (talk) 02:15, 27 May 2008 (UTC)

Looks good; how about incorporating the sun and banner logo in there are well? Overkill? — KvЯt GviЯnЭlБ Speak! 03:53, 27 May 2008 (UTC)

Can't we just use the Wikipedia logo? -- Felipe Aira 05:06, 27 May 2008 (UTC)

I don't think so. The Wikipedia logo is also copyrighted by Wikimedia Foundation. Suggestion Nino, you can include the Wikipe-tan mascot for Philippine collorabation or the original Wikipe-tan (to make more international) in your logo. --Jojit (talk) 06:15, 27 May 2008 (UTC)
Don't expect any agreements on logo use between the WMF and WMPH just yet. These agreements will not come into fruition until WMPH is approved. --Sky Harbor 16:25, 27 May 2008 (UTC)

Draft Guidelines for Lists of companies by country - Feedback Requested

Within WikiProject Companies I am trying to establish guidelines for all Lists of companies by country, the implementation of which would hopefully ensure a minimum quality standard and level of consistency across all of these related but currently disparate articles. The ultimate goal is the improvement of these articles to Featured List status. As a WikiProject that currently has one of these lists within your scope, I would really appreciate your feedback! You can find the draft guidelines here. Thanks for your help as we look to build consensus and improve Wikipedia! - Richc80 (talk) 13:53, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

Manila 4 Meetup

I propose

  • June 21 as date
  • 2:00 to 3:00 PM as time
  • Starbucks 4th floor(?) or ground floor Megamall as venue
  • Huddle for the Cebu 1 meetup and incorporation requirements (BDO opens on Saturday)

I don't know if they still have the 4/F Starbucks store or if it's just under renovation. But nevertheless, either June 14 or 21 sounds good to me. Maganda sana sa 14 kasi it's also payday, I can give my contribution as well ;-) --- Tito Pao (talk) 00:45, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

Basta this year okay na ata.--Lenticel (talk) 04:57, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
Yes, it should be 2008. By the way, regarding address, I have seen some AoI samples that indicate the complete address. Probably, just for privacy and presentation purposes, we would be keeping the format as posted in the meta (i.e. City or Municipality, Province) then we can state the complete address in the actual document if the SEC requires it. --Jojit (talk) 05:35, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

Resetting indent Thanks for the heads up. I'll be updating the notarial acknowledgement page on Meta with my cedula's date and place of issuance. If needed, I'll provide at least 2 photocopies of my cedula.--- Tito Pao (talk) 05:59, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

most likely june 21 since we have two weeks to fix and debate on the by-laws and one week to wait for ChapCom's comments. --Exec8 (talk) 17:34, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
Good, good, good...I can make it on June 21 then, will cancel all appointments for that date once June 21 is confirmed ^___^ --- Tito Pao (talk) 02:14, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

Conflicts of history

This has been off-radar mostly: Wikipedia has just become a vehicle on questioning the location of the first mass in the Philippines. Yes, we all know it's between Limasawa, Southern Leyte and present-day Butuan City, and we also know that the National Historical Institute ruled that the Mass was held in the former. However, given the edit history of the article and the compelling evidence on both sides, even though we are NOT the NHI, we should take a look. --Sky Harbor 08:27, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

I had seen a bit of the editing. Affected articles include:
--seav (talk) 08:39, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
Duh, I asked the "adder" of this information to cite them but he's not listening, I think. --Efe (talk) 08:54, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
According to The Philippines: A Unique Nation, There are five reasins why Masao (now part of Butuan City) was the place where the First Mass was held:
  1. Name of the place (According to Antonio Pigafetta, Magellan's expedition to a place that has three syllables - "Masao" or something close to it.)
  2. Route from Homonhon, Eastern Samar (The expedition travelled 20-25 leagues from Homonhon taking a west southwest [WSW] course. The distance between Limasawa & Homonhon was 14.6 leagues and Limasawa was blocked from homonhon by the tip of Southern Leyte.)
  3. Latitude position (Some sources locate the place at 9 degrees north latitude while others at 9.67 degrees north. Limasawa is closer to the 10 degree mark, while Masao was exactly at the 9 degree line.)
  4. Route to Cebu (The route taken by the explorers from Masao to Cebu was similar to the route used by ferries and ships in the present day. According to Pigafetta's chronicle, the distance traveled from the site of the first Mass to Cebu is 35 leagues or 140 miles [or 224 km], exactly the distance between Masao and Cebu. If they traveled from Limasawa, then they traveled only 80 miles.)
  5. Geographical features (there are five)
    1. The bonfire (Masao in Butuanon = light, residents of Masao back then celebrate a good harvest by cooking rice cakes in open fire. There were no rifefields in Limasawa.)
    2. Balanghai (There were balanghais in Masao back then (nine of them were excavated in the lastfour decades or so, none were found in Limasawa)
    3. Houses (Masao residents built hoses on stilts, Limasawans built low houses due to frequent typhoons in the area)
    4. Abundance of gold (Masao was lucky enough, since it was near the Agusan Valley [where gold is abundant and mined from the pre-Hispanic times to the present day] while Limasawa had no gold in their area.
    5. A developed settlement (Back then, what Masao was in 1521 is the equivalent of what Singapore or Hong Kong is right now. Even if I exaggerated in the previous sentence, Masao was a thriving community practising honest market transactions unlike in the Marianas. The king of Masao enjoyed great prestige in the Visayas-Mindanao region, especially in Cebu. And Masao was a major center of trade and internation commerce in Southeast Asia. Limasawa on the other hand, never attained such an importance since the begining of civilization in the Philippines.)
