Remembering

It's possible that the last time I was on-campus at Columbia (Barnard, more specifically) was for another Wiki event. It was a long time ago, I don't remember the exact year, but I do remember that it was the first time I met David Goodman. While I'm looking forward to seeing all my wiki-friends again (and meeting new ones), it will be with a certain amount of sadness knowing that David won't be there. Sold out?

I just noticed the same thing today. I had clicked the "sign up" button back in December and when I came back today to put in a Lighting Talk, I noticed that Eventbrite tickets were "required". When I clicked on the Eventbrite link, I also got waitlisted. Hopefully the organizers can sort this out (get a larger room?), otherwise a fair number of people who thought they signed up may not be able to get in. Nowa (talk) 13:29, 8 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Thriley @Nowa - If you are a dedicated Wikimedian, do not be deterred. Please sign up for the waitlist and we will move you to the attendee list. Waitlist is currently functioning. But...
What exactly is this venue? I mean: What is the capacity of this venue? I can't remember a time when we had an event that was "Sold Out."
What was the threshold that triggered the Sold Out notice?
I say: the more attendees the better the event.
Remember, so as not to forget: Be Bold.
If this is a test to limit attendance while that sorta sounds interesting, that is not a good idea. Not in keeping with our mission of being more inclusive, welcoming new members, increasing attendance and participation.
The more I think about this event being "Sold Out" the less happy I get.
"Sold Out" keeps people away. "Sold Out" is a waste of energy.

Waitlist? We don't want a waitlist. We want Attendees.

The fact that someone might attempt to sign up to attend our free event on Eventbrite and not receive a confirmed ticket makes me ill.

The fact that someone might express an interest in attending our event and be told. "Sorry we're full, but maybe you'll get lucky and a seat will open" strikes me as antithetical to everything I know about wikipedia and free knowledge.

Below is the first paragraph of our Code of Conduct. Getting waitlisted is certainly not hassle-free. I sure hope no one finds getting waitlisted a form of harassment, but I can see how some might.

Wikimedia NYC is dedicated to providing a harassment-free experience for everyone, regardless of age, ability, gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, physical appearance, race, ethnicity, religion (or lack thereof), preferred intellectual property license, and technical ability or technology choices. We do not tolerate harassment of participants or volunteers in any form. Sexual language and imagery is not appropriate for any event unless it relates to the focus of the event (i.e. history of gender in images, HIV awareness). This includes talks, workshops, parties, Wikipedia talk pages, social networks and other online media. Additionally, any disparaging or harassing remarks made about other attendees while at the same event may result in expulsion from the event. Anyone violating these rules may be sanctioned or expelled from the event at the discretion of the organizers. If you have questions about the code of conduct or behavior, please ask a volunteer.

Indeed it's a bad thing when more people can't sign up due to lack of capacity. When planning started, it seemed optimistic to think the same number would come as did in the years shortly before the plague. So, the venue is suitable to a hundred easily or two without much difficulty. This was expected to be more than adequate. But then, more than four hundred hit Eventbrite. There is some reason to expect that over half of those won't show up, which would allow those who are waitlisted to come in, but there's no way of really knowing until day of. Other Eventbites have come out the same way. There was a limit of, say thirty, so I signed for the waitlist. When I arrived, five were on site already, and at start time only twenty more had arrived including a few more of the waitlisted and one how hadn't signed at all. So no problem. That's the difficulty with free events; not having paid, people sign up for too many of them and only later decide which one to attend or even whether. And no, sometimes I didn't get in, and no, either way, I didn't complain that someone was harassing me. Jim.henderson (talk) 22:59, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
