The Wiki World's Fair is a New York City wiki-celebration with its flagship event to be held all-day on Saturday August 13, 2022 at the Queens Museum, in the context of the 1939/1964 fairgrounds at Flushing Meadows–Corona Park. There will also be smaller sessions for much of August 12-14 (Friday, Saturday, Sunday) as hybrid local gatherings for the global online conference Wikimania 2022. The series is a sequel to the Wiki World's Fair Governors Island of a decade ago.

Befitting the globally-minded theme, the event is to include a Translat-a-thon (in the proud Queens wiki tradition), and an exploration of topics at the intersection of culture and technology.

All attendees are subject to Wikimedia NYC's Code of Conduct. In addition, to participate in person you should be vaccinated and also be sure to respect others' personal space, and we may limit overall attendance size if appropriate. The Queens Museum encourages the wearing of masks when indoors, and especially be mindful of those in your proximity.

Note: Museum tickets are not required. When you arrive at the Queens Museum, just say you are coming for the Wiki event, and register at the front desk.

Agenda

WMNYC visitors at Dendur, Friday

Livestream times relevant to NYC (tentative). The flagship in-person session will be on Saturday at and around the Queens Museum, some others may have more informal events, e.g, at Bohemian Citizens' Benevolent Society beer garden in Astoria.

For completists and those comfortable with early mornings, we will possibly also have micro-gatherings 8-10am on Thursday (only chance to synch with the Asia-Pacific day), Saturday and Sunday.

There will also be a lazy lunch on Friday afternoon for out-of-town earlycomers who are arriving then, before the evening welcome reception.

Edit-a-thon/Translat-a-thon

Especially at the Queens Museum on Saturday, we'll focus on content improvement on Wikipedia, Wikidata, and other projects. Given the World's Fair theme, we will put a particular emphasis on building maps and on translations.

We will build on the history of the fairgrounds, and on the Queens Museum permanent collection and current museum exhibitions, including the Panorama of the City of New York and related map stuff, combined with the topics of the Stephanie Dinkins exhibition (which extends into the Panorama).

Lightning talks

Add your 3-5 minute lightning talk here! Lightning talks may cover a wide range of topics related to Wikipedia, Wikimedia, and the larger free culture movement. They don't even have to mention Wikipedia/Wikimedia, but they should reflect it in some way. Unfortunately, I am no longer able to attend due to a recent covid-19 exposure. I am staying put and avoiding contact so as not to infect anyone. I am with you in spirit, however.
I send my sincere and best wishes for a resourceful & robust Wiki World's Fair,
I am certain the New York City Pavilion "at" Wikimania will uphold the proud legacy of the building!
