Wikipedia:WikiProject Oz

For more information on WikiProjects, please see Wikipedia:WikiProjects and Wikipedia:WikiProject best practices

This project is designed to organize and create better articles about the Oz franchise through the initial run of books by L. Frank Baum, Ruth Plumly Thompson, et al., and adaptations of the series including the 1939 film, The Wiz, Return to Oz, and Wicked. The project also seeks to better organize and gather information about plots, characters (created by Baum and post-Baum), and artwork related to the properties by illustrators like W. W. Denslow and John R. Neill.

Scope Goals

  1. To detail information about the Oz books, their adaptations, the fictional world of the Land of Oz, and about the real-life figures who shaped the world.
  2. To expand Wikipedia's knowledge in regards to all things Oz on the internet.
  3. To expand availability of the public domain materials present in large swathes of the franchise.

New to Oz

If you are new to the world of Oz, welcome! The world is quite vast with many books, films, and other adaptations surrounding it. Finding a way in can be tricky, so below are some suggested ways to get learn and be exposed to Ozian materials.

Key pages to get started

Attempting to find your way into Oz can be tricky with the expansive world. To get started just try reading what material is available to you! Be it Wikipedia pages on books or reading the books themselves over on Wikisource. Otherwise try some of the below pages!

  • The Wonderful Wizard of Oz | Wikisource
    • If you have never read anything related to the series this is a great entry point to see if it is of your interests!
  • The Royal Book of Oz | Wikisource
    • While this is the 15th book in the series, it is the first by Ruth Plumly Thompson who actually wrote more books than Baum. It features glimpses at many characters from the series up to that point while also giving the Scarecrow lots of focus. It also introduces new characters that Thompson would bring back in her later stories. Be warned, it does feature Asian stereotyping and caricature.
  • The Wizard of Oz | Public Domain in 2035
    • The film from MGM is an iconic piece of American film history and film culture. Many popular conceptions of Oz are usually derived from this work.
