An article's assessment is generated from the class and importance parameters in the {{WikiProject Circus}} banner on its talk page.

The following values may be used for the class parameter:
- FA (adds articles to Category:FA-Class Circus articles)
- A (adds articles to Category:A-Class Circus articles)
- GA (adds articles to Category:GA-Class Circus articles)
- B (adds articles to Category:B-Class Circus articles)
- C (adds articles to Category:C-Class Circus articles)
- Start (adds articles to Category:Start-Class Circus articles)
- Stub (adds articles to Category:Stub-Class Circus articles)
- NA (for pages, such as templates or disambiguation pages, where assessment is unnecessary; adds pages to Category:NA-Class Circus articles)
Articles for which a valid class is not provided are listed in Category:Unassessed Circus articles. The class should be assigned according to the quality scale below.
The following values may be used for the importance parameter:
- Top (adds articles to Category:Top-importance Circus articles)
- High (adds articles to Category:High-importance Circus articles)
- Mid (adds articles to Category:Mid-importance Circus articles)
- Low (adds articles to Category:Low-importance Circus articles)
The parameter is not used if an article's class is set to NA, and may be omitted in those cases. The importance should be assigned according to the importance scale below.

Top | Circus article + international high renown (even if closed) circuses (e.g. Chinese State Circus/Moscow State Circus/Archaos/Cirque du soleil) |
High | other big/renowned circuses, current major act types (trapeze/clowns/fire/acrobatics etc), individuals that made major circuses e.g. Barnum/Ringling |
Mid | small circuses, famous performers, current minor act types (animals, bearded lady etc), minor circus types (flea circus), laws passed about circuses, large international shows/tours |
Low | specific shows/performances/small tours/acts/props/routines, media about circus, venues etc |
