Wikipedia:WikiProject Horticulture and Gardening

Welcome to WikiProject Horticulture and Gardening. Some Wikipedians have formed a project to better organize information in articles related to Horticulture and Gardening. This page and its subpages contain their suggestions; it is hoped that this project will help to focus the efforts of other Wikipedians. If you would like to help, please inquire on the talk page and see the to-do list there.

Scope Scope

The Horticulture and Gardening project aims to enrich and organize content for the topics of horticulture and gardening. Subjects include gardens, horticultural practices, plants, animals and pathogens that affect plants and gardens, soil, and so on. Currently, many of the category pages related to this field are in serious disarray.

Goals

  1. To organize and clean up the related categories, including gardening, horticulture, compost, organic gardening, etc.
  2. To improve pages related to this project.
  3. To add horticultural information to plant articles, including growing conditions, horticultural techniques (as wiki links), pest and disease issues, cultivars, etc.

Structure

Formats for articles covered by this project should follow those established in each category. However, some changes might be needed in some of the articles, such as adding culture, pest and disease, hardiness, etc. to plant articles.

This WikiProject Horticulture and Gardening focuses on the cultivation of following products and technologies:

  1. Fruits (Pomology)
  2. Vegetables (Olericulture)
  3. Flowers (Floriculture)
  4. Herbs and Spices
  5. Mushrooms
  6. Crops
  7. Harvest science (Handling crops after harvest)

Project tasks

  1. Clean up and better organize this page.
  2. Work on disambiguation for the genus Chrysanthemum, members and former members of which appear under many names due to recent reclassifications.
  3. Find images for Category:Wikipedia requested images of gardening
  4. Clean up and add to Category:Organic gardening. Probably a bit of trawling through the agriculture categories will be needed. Also many organic techniques are not well described, so new pages would be helpful.
  5. Pests and Diseases of Garden Plants: Linked lists of particular pests and diseases on the plant articles may be helpful. Perhaps use "Pests and Diseases of this plant" as the heading. Reciprocally, lists of plant hosts on articles about pests and diseases.
  6. Regional Lists: Regional lists of weeds, garden plants (perhaps by hardiness zones), public gardens, etc. may be useful to those who do garden research on wiki.
  7. Work to improve the horticulture stubs.
