Aksi great (talk · contribs) – Aksi great, from Ahmedabad, Gujarat, (western) India, has been contributing to Wikipedia for 12 months now, and actively since late January. He is primarily interested in improving coverage of India related material, across all facets of Indian life.
Aksi great is best known for expanding and polishing Ahmedabad for FA status (here, and also creating and maintaining Portal:Gujarat and also helping to maintain the rotation of displayed material on Portal:India([1]). He is the current coordinator of the Weekly Indian Collaboration.
His 8 DYK articles : Ahmedabad Stock Exchange, Ela Bhatt, Mrinalini Sarabhai, Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande, Pisharoth Rama Pisharoty, A Suitable Boy, Sidi Bashir mosque and Wild Ass Wildlife Sanctuary - nature cover a diverse range of topics including culture, music, literature, religion, history, politics and physics. He also has an ongoing project to create articles for members of the Lok Sabha (Indian parliament) (User:Aksi great/Members of Lok Sabha, User:Aksi great/Indian Cabinet), as well as working on many articles about organisations, landmarks and corporations in Ahmedabad (see User:Aksi great/Miscellaneous and User:Aksi great/Ahmedabad).
He has been helping with merging to content produced by User:Ganeshbot([2]) and also is currently working on User:Akashbot, which is in the pipeline.
Aksi has a very sound understanding of the pillars of encyclopedic integrity - WP:NPOV, WP:NOR, as seen by the removing of offending content ([3], [4], [5], [6]) and WP:BLP fixing up defamatory allegations ([7]).
He is skilled at working through content improvements ( [8], [9]), at Peer Review [10] and project coordination ([11],[12]), and never edit wars or pushes POV.
He has a good knowledge of copyright, marking all of his uploads with an appropriate tag.([13]). He is also active in image policy and tagging ([14], [15]), a rare and much sought-after skill, as only a handful of admins appear to have the confidence to delete images.
Aksi has a good understanding of how to deal with linkspam ([16], [17]), copyvios ( [18], and reverts vandalism( [19]), warning the users appropriately ([20]).
He is skillful at working to help others, offering encouragement ([21]), advice ([22]), about FU policy ([23], [24])
Aksi has a good record of discussing the issues in an AfD, rather than simply "voting", which is important to ensure that articles are kept/deleted appropriately on the merits of the argument rather than straight "voting" ([25], [26], [27], [28], [29], Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Dr._Syamaprasad_Jana_Jagaran_Manch)
Aksi is very cool and civil and has shown an ability to maintain rationality and logic at all times, even under intense fire and at times deliberate provocation. Recently he intervened to calm a ferocious battle between users from the neighbouring Indian states of Karnataka (Kannada speaking) and Maharashtra (Marathi speaking) where many others were unwilling to do so. He enforced NPOV ([30], [31]), mediated on the talk page ([32], [33] ,[34], [35]), on a user page ( User_talk:Mahawiki/Archive/Archive_01#Belgaum, User_talk:Sarvagnya/Archive_1 - please see surrounding comments to see the nature of this mess, andUser_talk:Aksi_great/Archive_6#kannadi_vandalism_strickes_again.21 - the label shows the mentality of the conflict). This and this nicely convey the magnitude to the problem.
For those curious about the "harassing and admin" block by User:Philwelch - this resulted after Aksi asked Phil to refrain from using profanity. It was later overturned unanimously on AN (Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard/Archive40#Admin_harassment_block), including Phil himself. Aksi took the block calmly and in good faith, and was vindicated by many administrators.
Finally, all the housekeeping like edit summaries, userpage, signature and email are in order, so I would ask the community to promote Aksi great to administrative duties. User:Blnguyen | BLabberiNg 03:05, 17 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Co-nomination by Samir धर्म Could I add anything else to such an exceptional nomination? We've seen Aksi great's incredible contributions as an editor: he has 8 DYK's to his credit and was instrumental in bringing Ahmedabad to FA status. However, his greatest asset is his cool demeanour and his calm, levelheaded approach to conflict, which I think would benefit him greatly as an administrator. I'm certain he'll be one of our finest. - Candidate, please indicate acceptance of the nomination here: I accept. - Aksi_great (talk) 04:22, 17 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
- Questions for the candidate
Dear candidate, thank you for offering to serve Wikipedia in this capacity. Please take the time to answer a few generic questions to provide guidance for voters:
- 1. What sysop chores do you anticipate helping with? Please check out Category:Wikipedia backlog and Category:Administrative backlog, and read the page about administrators and the administrators' reading list.
- A: I have lots of experience with reverting vandalism. So I see myself using the rollback button there and also helping out at WP:AIV. I have experience working with WP:CSD (mainly in the article space). I'd like to keep an eye on CAT:CSD and helping clear the backlog whenever I can. My first love though is editing articles. So I would really like to help out at WP:DYK. I have some experience with tagging images at CAT:NT and identifying images which would come under CAT:NL and CAT:NS. I would lend a helping hand at WP:IFD whenever I get time. I am also open to doing more things after gaining more experience with the tools - keeping an eye on Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors helping with page protections and keeping a watch on WP:AN3.
- 2. Of your articles or contributions to Wikipedia, are there any with which you are particularly pleased, and why?
- A: If I am asked to pick up one article from all the articles that I have edited, it would be Ahmedabad. Cleaning up the article, sending it to peer review, and then finally to FAC was very satisfying. I am also happy with the articles I sent to DYK. They portray the diversity of Gujarat (my home state) and India very well. I started Portal:Gujarat and would soon be starting a project to improve Gujarat related articles. Other than that, I am pleased with my work at WP:INCOTW and WP:POI.
- 3. Have you been in any conflicts over editing in the past or do you feel other users have caused you stress? How have you dealt with it and how will you deal with it in the future?
- A: I have not been in any conflicts over editing during my time at wikipedia. I avoid getting involved in edit-wars and try to mediate whenever I see an edit-war brewing. I have mediated in the dispute over Belgaum and would continue to try and prevent edit-wars in the future too. The incident involving Phil was my worst evening at wikipedia. The message you get informing you about your block is not a pleasant one. My faith in admins and wikipedia's open nature was boosted after reading the subsequent discussions on the noticeboard. Phil lost his cool for a moment and made a mistake, for which he apologised later and I considered the matter to be closed. That incident has helped me understand the power and responsibility vested upon admins by the community.
- 4. Since the candidate is from India, and the candidate has made an article about the the Ahmedabad Stock Exchange, and has knowledge of Indian Politics, Law, and Business, as mentioned from the co-nominators above, would the candidate be willing to find more information and expand Wikipedia, espescially the business aspects, exports, imports, currency valuations; of India after the candidate becomes an Admin? --Endgame1 06:57, 17 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
- A: I have stated in my answer to the first question - my first love is editing articles. I'll be writing articles as long as I am associated with wikipedia. Ahmedabad Stock Exchange was created by me as part of my Ahmedabad expansion drive. I looked around for more stuff I could add to the article and ended up with my first DYK. I am constantly on the search for things to write about. Business and money matters are not my cup of tea. Even then, if I do come across something which interests me, I will not hesitate to do some research and write an article about it. - Aksi_great (talk) 07:01, 17 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
- 5. So what you are saying is you shall only create articles which interest you, not what is asked by Wikipedia communitiy if you can help them?--Endgame1 07:04, 17 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
- A: Majority of the articles I have created till now have been about topics I am interested in. Till now no one has requested me to help create an article for them. If someone may do so in the future, I would be more than happy to work along with them and write a good article.
- 6 Please, would you help expand this stub article from research Shipping Corporation of India ? --Endgame1 07:12, 17 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
- 7 Please would you create an article from your research regarding the customs tax in India that is Import and Export? An example of other countries would be
- An interesting aspect of this article should contain whether India levys export taxes on materials shipped to western countries, and if so how much?
Endgame1 07:25, 17 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
- 8 Please would you create an article from your research on how bulk materials shipped to Canada from India? --Endgame1 07:34, 17 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
- Answers to Q 6,7,8 - Well, you have caught me when I had some things planned of my own (like helping out User:Rajithmohan with the Thiruvananthapuram article, and expanding Freedom of Religion Bill - an article I started yesterday). I'll take a look at Shipping Corp. of India and try and improve that article. The other 3 articles you request will be a bit harder and I can't honestly promise to create those article during the course of this RfA. If you begin work on those articles now, I can chip in during the next week. Another suggestion I can give is to nominate one of the articles for WP:INCOTW so that more editors can help and work can be done faster. - Aksi_great (talk) 07:58, 17 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Question from Malber (talk · contribs)
- 9. What do the policy of WP:IAR and the essay WP:SNOW mean to you and how would you apply them?
- A: Well, as the policy says, IAR means to use your good sense and do something when you are prevented from improving wikipedia even if the rules say otherwise. When a process runs for some time, and there is overwhelming consensus in favour of one thing, then SNOW comes into picture. It means that when there is close to 0% chance of a differing view arising, then it is best to not run it through the process any more.
- 10. Can you give examples of how you would apply them?
- A: I don't have specific examples of where I could use IAR, and I don't see myself using it too often. But I can say where I won't use it - I wouldn't use the IAR clause to change a long standing policy. Policies have been established by consensus of a large number of editors. If I feel a change is required, I would instead put forward my proposal. Another place where I won't do it to force my views on other people. This could happen at AfDs where there may be a majority voting to keep. I can't just IAR and decide to delete the article. I see speedy deletions and PROD as an application of SNOW. SNOW is also useful in deciding to speedy keep an article at AfD. For example, see this AfD nomination about an Indian singer. Wikipedia:Suggestions on how to ignore all rules and Wikipedia:Process is important are also nice essays. In all, if I ever use IAR or SNOW, I would take great care using them.
- 11. How important is it for an administrator to keep a sense of humor?
- A: It is very important for anyone to have a good sense of humour. But that is different from being a practical joker. An admin should never use his admin tools to play a joke, even if it can be reverted in a few seconds. Having a sense of humour is the ability to laugh at your own mistakes. At times, a person with a sense of humour plays a vital role in diffusing a tense moment.
- 12. Being from India, do you think you could remain objective and maintain a NPOV when dealing with issues relating to and editors from Pakistan?
- A: NPOV is one of the most important policies of wikipedia. I really feel I can maintain NPOV and objectivity in such a case. More below.
- 13. What steps will you take to accomplish this?
- A: First of all, the conflict between the two countries isn't that much of a big deal here at wikipedia. There aren't specific steps that I have in mind as I am confident of my neutrality in the matter. In case I see something which I don't agree with in an article, I would discuss rather than fight over it. There is also the Pakistani noticeboard where I could ask for help.
- 14. Do you think your nomination is TL;DR?
- A: Not at all. My nom is long - but that is not a bad thing. That doesn't mean that all short noms are bad. The first thing I always do when I see an RfA is to go through the nomination statement. This is just Blnguyen's way of nominating people and I am very thankful to him for having taken the pains to go through my entire contribution history and come up with the diffs. Still, I would prefer all people to sample my contributions themselves before deciding which way to !vote (or ask me more questions if in doubt over something). Above all, I don't think the length of the nomination is any reflection on the candidate. - Aksi_great (talk) 16:30, 17 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Question from TerryJ-Ho (talk · contribs)
- 15. WP is increasingly being seen as a media capable of being manipulated by persistent editors and many of the articles have systemic bias. How do you expect to control this?
- A: I don't agree with your first sentence. Perhaps you could point me to specific reports which accuse wikipedia of being what you mention. If there exists a systemic bias then I think with more and more people visiting wikipedia, it will gradually be removed. The way to go forward is to have more FAs, more projects and above all more editors.
- 16.A big problem for India articles has been the religious issues. You come from Gujarat, a state that has gone through great turmoil due to religious problems.Do you have an example where you have intervened to solve the issues between editors irrespective of your religious followings? How will you ensure that religious right wing discourses do not make into articles by providing new theories and histories?
- A: No, I haven't intervened to solve the issues between editors where my religious followings would matter. To ensure that POV is not inserted into the article, I don't have to do anything but enforce wikipedia policy of verifiability and no original research. - Aksi_great (talk) 20:40, 19 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion (for expressing views without numbering)
- the comments below were responses to this self-removed comment by Endgame1
- I completely disagree with that statement. Admin tools are janitorial tools, not "tools of honour". I think User:AaronSw got it about right in this essay (off-wiki) - there is a bunch of regular users who make all the decisions and account for about 70% of all the edits, but these end up to be janitorial and the contributors who are really most valuable are occasional passers by. Let's face it, admins are janitors, not architects, and should not be forced to be anything else; when you force someone to write articles you won't get most of the standard you see in the better articles on Wikipedia, you will get mush. Though of course it is best if people edit as much as they can, I find it a ridiculous and pointless expectation for admins to churn up featured articles.--Konst.able 08:03, 17 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
- Comment. I would like to question whether there is any rationale behind Endgame1's votes, except for trying to coerce Akash to create articles. I guess most of our editors do not like to create articles in which they have little or no interest. As Konstable points out above, that will only result in low-quality "mush" that somebody else will have to clear up. So what if he is only interested in India-related articles; his expertise in that field (as can be seen in his contributions and links provided by Blnguyen above) should be good enough. What is our primary aim? Creating an encyclopedia collaboratively. Therefore, we would need people who are knowledgeable in their respective fields, not necessarily a jack-of-all-trades. --May the Force be with you! Shreshth91 09:14, 17 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

- COuld you please elaborate? I feel that the candidate's answer to that question is very reasonable. RyanGerbil10(Упражнение В!) 04:18, 19 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
- If someone has to ask if your nomination is too long, you really don't want to write a long answer when a yes or a no would have done. Is there any point in answering 14 questions anyway? For me it just shows an insecurity and pandering towards the audience, when I first started voting on RFA, all you needed were 3 form questions and a no big deal clause. - Hahnchen 15:38, 19 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
- How can the candidate help it if he is asked many questions? It's not like he wrote them, other people asked him these questions and expected responses, which he gave. Proper communication is essential to being an administrator. I fail to see the reasoning behind this oppose vote at all. RyanGerbil10(Упражнение В!) 16:12, 19 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
- Not answering them would have shown some guts, that's all. If I had been asked TL;DR? I'd have either ignored it or replied with one word. Then again, these are probably the rogue qualities in me that value action over words. - Hahnchen 16:24, 19 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
- An utterly ridiculous reason for an oppose, and I'm certain the closing bureaucrat will take this with the mountain of salt it deserves -- Samir धर्म 23:50, 19 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

- Well Samir, I'm sorry if you find my reasoning ridiculous or offensive in any way, I just don't find an overwhelming desire to please a great feature of an admin. I'm sure the closing bureaucrats will treat this oppose like they did to the opposes on the Carnildo RFA. You know what the bureaucrats did? They violated consensus to do the right thing, something I think that today's RFA candidates wouldn't do. - Hahnchen 00:37, 20 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
- So what you are saying is you have absolutely no justification for opposing, you're doing it for the heck of it? If you're not here to criticize or praise Akash, why are you here?Bakaman Bakatalk 00:56, 20 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
- Hanchen, don't try to drag irrelevent debates about Carnildo's RfA into here, it has had enough debate elsewhere. And you do realise that we're just giving Aksi a couple of extra buttons not eternal immortality and leadership of the Wiki?--Konst.ableTalk 06:35, 20 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
- I absolutely love Bhadani's comment below. And you do realise that we're just giving Aksi a couple of extra buttons, that's exactly what I do realise, that adminship is no big deal as I mentioned above. I don't see the point in admins jumping through hoops such as 16 or so questions just to get a rollback and improved move buttons. I bet some RFA candidates would actually answer a question on Wikipedia's colour scheme if I asked them. Those are not the decisive kinds of admins that I want. - Hahnchen 23:52, 20 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
- I think every one is entitled to have his/her vision of wikipedia, it may be myopic or futuristic. Hahnch has every right to have his vision and guts! I find nothing wrong in his attitude from his point of view!! --Bhadani 14:53, 20 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
- Ok, honestly, as the guy who probally has 2 of the top 10 longest RFA pages ever (I think my RFA was 28 questions or so, and TawkerbotTorA was 10 pages of QUESTIONS) it's sufficient to say that page length is a non factor -- Tawker 03:51, 21 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
- COuld you please elaborate? I feel that the candidate's answer to that question is very reasonable. RyanGerbil10(Упражнение В!) 04:18, 19 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Neutral
- Neutral Nothing that justifies an oppose, but neutral because adminship is not a badge of honour. Cynical 09:41, 17 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
NuetralPer Cynical, I can't see anything that justifies an oppose... but there is something about adminship being a "badge of honor" which it is not. I see nothing honorable about weilding a mop. —— Eagle (ask me for help) 12:06, 17 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]- Unless it represents a likelihood that someone will violate policy and cause damage, voting because you do not agree with his views or statements is not helpful for the project. - Taxman Talk 13:22, 17 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
- Errm... where did he say adminship is a "badge of honor"? Perhaps you guys are thinking of this comment by User:Endgame1 [36], who's behavior is a bit bizarre. 75.105.178.150 19:13, 17 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
- I don't see what the big deal is here. Judging a user because your view of admin tools doesn't relate to his view is not really justified. Aksi feels that being an admin is a honor that has been bestowed upon him by the Wikipedia community. I don't see where one can go wrong with this statement. I don't think you can associate a negative connotation with "tools of honour". He can use those tools to block vandals and delete pages, which would benefit Wikipedia as a whole. - Mmm, Let me think this over, my response may not have been as well thought out as I thought.—— Eagle (ask me for help) 02:33, 18 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
