Please join us on Tuesday, May 12, 2015 from 1–4pm for a Wikipedia Women's Health Information Edit-a-thon, hosted by the OHSU Center for Women's Health in honor of National Women's Health Week. The event will be held on the OHSU Marquam Hill campus, in the Biomedical Information Communications Center, located at 3280 Southwest Sam Jackson Park Road, Portland, OR 97239.
Researchers and doctors are learning that women often express symptoms and experience treatment differently from men, as with heart disease. In addition, there are many aspects of health that are unique to women, such as pregnancy and menopause. This edit-a-thon is intended to address some of these important differences and to generally improve women’s health information in key articles and topics. Areas for improvement have been identified in cooperation with WikiProject Medicine.
Prior Wikipedia editing is not required; assistance will be available the day of the event. Attendees should bring their own laptops and power cords. RSVP by signing your username below.
Details
No Wikipedia editing experience necessary; as needed throughout the event, tutoring will be provided for Wikipedia newcomers. Female editors and editors with medical interest or experience are particularly encouraged to attend. If you are unfamiliar with Wikipedia, you might try this training module which will help explain a lot of things, including how to add your signature. Attendees should bring their own laptops and power cords.
Ideas
The following is a sampling of suggested articles to create or add upon. However, feel free to come up with your own ideas! In addition to the suggestions below, editors may consider cleaning up articles on health topics relating to women’s health. Helpful updates could be as simple as: making sure reference links are still appropriate and functional; adding new inline citations/references; adding a photo; etc. Editors may choose to focus on health articles unique to women or work on topics where expression in women presents significant diagnosis, treatment, or symptom differences (for example, heart disease or stroke).
