Please join us for Wikipedia Day LA, a celebration of Wikipedia's 17th birthday.

This year's theme is LA on Record.

Our keynote speaker is Stratiscope's John Bwarie, who knows more about LA than anyone we've ever met. He worked for four elected city officials, and founded organizations including  City Impact Lab, the LA Heritage Alliance, and the LA History Happy Hour,  He also founded Secret City Tours to reveal the hidden side of Los Angeles, wrote the book Nobody Walks in LA, and held a communications position for the U.S. Geological Survey.  (He knows a lot about earthquakes!  It doesn't get more LA than that.)

The Mining LA Sources panel is about digging in to LA's unique resources and archives.  The panel will be moderated by Liza Posas, archivist at the Autry Center, and the staff coordinator for Los Angeles as Subject (LAAS).  The panelists include Mallory Furnier, archivist at CSUN and the chair of the LAAS executive committee, Jessica Gambling, Museum Archivist at LACMA, and Sue Luftschein, the head of the Special Collections at USC Libraries and an LAAS executive committee member.

Remember when colleges Just Said No to Wikipedia?   All of that's changed.  We are reliable!  We are respected!  We are thorough. The Wiki Ed panel will talk about working with Wikipedia in the classroom.  The panelists include Dr. Grace Gilles, Professor in the Department of Classics at UCLA,  Dr. Karyl Ketchum, Associate Professor in the Department of Women and Gender Studies at CSU Fulleron, and Sarah Mojarad, Lecturer in the Viterbi School of Engineering at USC.  It will be  moderated by Kai Alexis Smith, MSLIS.  She's the Subject Librarian for the College of Environmental Design, Ethnic and Women’s Studies and Foreign Languages at Cal Poly Pomona and the AfroCROWD LA Coordinator.  (Los Angeles academics!)

PKM -- a longtime Wikipedian -- will lead an introduction to Wikidata.  It's all about big data. (Big data is huge in Los Angeles!)

There will be flash sessions!  There will be a discussion about the newly minted Wikipedians of Los Angeles User Group!   There will be cake!  (It's coming from the celebrated Hansen's Bakery,  sugaring up LA cakefests since 1920.) Wikipedia Day LA is free, and open to everyone.
