I dont understand the reason why if there is a new version of software out the screenshot of the old version needs to be deleted. is there no way to avoid this?? In my opinion it is a very important thing to give people an (visual) experience of how software versions had changes over time. In this case i would say that the mentioned rules (WP:NFCC#8 and WP:NFCC#3) do not go into effect at this particular question.
about WP:NFCC#3:
"Minimal number of items. Multiple items of non-free content are not used if one item can convey equivalent significant information."
One alone cant "onvey equivalent significant information" because you are not able to compare the graphic of both versions. Also it is a good example for the improvement of software through microsoft and so on wikipedia is supporting their produchts.
about WP:NFCC#8:
"Contextual significance. Non-free content is used only if its presence would significantly increase readers' understanding of the article topic, and its omission would be detrimental to that understanding."
Of cause the level of understanding would decrese significantly if the picture would be removed. A picture is worth a thousand words. So you could probably compare the look of the different software versions with many words but it would not be so much understandable as with this picter.
so in my oppinion the picture sould stay at its place

Hi. I am going to be straight with you. Everything you said so far is theory-mongering. In practice, the difference between these two images is to small, the article does not say anything about this superficial difference and words alone more than sufficient to cover it. Furthermore, copyright is not concerned with how many words an image is worth; if the image license is not yours, use word that are yours. File:James Lam photo.jpg (delete | talk | history | links | logs) – uploaded by Aliceyliang ( | contribs | uploads | upload log).

A user (Guest62476) just came on the IRC channel #wikipedia-en-help and asked if they could upload a file of their boss. They were told no, unless they were given permission by the photographer. Guest62476 acknowledged. I checked the page they asked about, and they uploaded the file... It was uploaded by Aliceyliang, who I think is Guest62476 (but I'm not sure). Thanks! • Neither of which would actually aid the reader in seeing what the villain is actually like, or have the shadows which are a key part of the story. 46.64.138.247 (talk) 13:17, 4 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
[note: same contributor as above IP - adress has changed for unknown reason 46.64.138.247 (talk) 13:19, 4 February 2014 (UTC)][reply]
  • in the first one, I am saying that the best way to show an image of the actual image of the villain is to show the actual villain - not something that is completely different. in the 2nd one, I am alerting admins to the fact that my IP address has changed in order to make sure that they realise they are from the same person. 94.193.96.12 (talk) 14:27, 5 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • [and it's gone and changed again. Maybe I get a different one every day? 94.193.96.12 (talk) 14:28, 5 February 2014 (UTC)][reply]
  • I know. But WP:NFCC is not about allowing the best way. Yes, it would have certainly best if Wikipedia owned all intellectual properties in existence and gave it away as free. But it isn't the reality. When the alternative NFCC-approved replacement is good enough, forget about the best. But judging by the nature of your comment I have not grasped what this image is showing whereas the sole duty of this image, as User:Kelvin 101 said above, is to help me and the likes of me understand the subject. All the more reason to delete a copyright protected image that accomplishes nothing. Best regards, Codename Lisa (talk) 18:57, 5 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • If the image is supposed to help the reader, then what is more helpful to the reader? As I said, this image contains the two key aspects of the story - 1) the shadows of the vashta nerada, 2) the effect that it has within the story (ie - it completely destroying people). This cannot be replaced by an image that shows neither. 94.193.96.12 (talk) 12:10, 6 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Frankly speaking, I am your optimal clueless reader and all I see is a space suit standing in the middle of a room. I thought after four threads of discussion, you are perhaps gracious enough to provide some explanations that can help. But you don't even indent your messages properly; "helping the reader" or "helping" in general, is evidently not what is happening. Well, if you have nothing better to say, I hope you'll excuse me. Best regards, Codename Lisa (talk) 16:06, 6 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep - I found that the image made the (unsourced) plot section on this far more comprehensible. I think this image does enough to pass NFCC#8. Would be nice to see some souring for the plot, as it does read as largely original research. - Peripitus (Talk) 12:24, 23 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
