- Keep: We need to preserve the "attribution path" for this image, as required by the GFDL. —Bkell (talk) 04:12, 23 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- neutral I don't really want to bother with issues regarding licence details, but personally I can live with keep or delete. Another solution might be simply to move it to Commons (just to avoid orphaned images in WP itsself).--Kmhkmh (talk) 11:34, 23 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Note: Since is this a general issue affecting all format changes for images in WP, isn't there already a guideline how to handle such cases (or if not yet - shouldn't one be formulated)?. It doesn't really make sense to discuss this general decision for each picture individually.--Kmhkmh (talk) 11:41, 23 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- SVG was hand made (not traced) and the license was changed to PD per simple geometric shapes. So there is no attribution path that can be broken, and the reference was given credit to the author. ZooFari 14:07, 23 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Even if attribution were required, all that we need to do is ensure that such attribution is on the SVG image page. There's no requirement that the raster file stay around forever. Calliopejen1 (talk) 22:11, 23 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- I have no issue with that, but apparently others (mistakenly) do so. That's why i'm wondering about a guideline to settle this issue and avoid individual discussions. So is there any (already)? Because with a clear guidline for most of these cases one could use speedy deletion.--Kmhkmh (talk) 23:11, 23 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- I don't think there is and I agree one should be started. I was hoping I would vectorize all the images in the Intercept theorem, but if attribution is such an issue, I don't think I can continue confidently. ZooFari 00:37, 24 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

- Attribution shouldn't be a problem. Please do continue vectorizing these images—it is a great improvement. Perhaps we don't need to keep the raster version around; I got that idea from text on the {{Vector version available}} tag, but maybe simply ensuring that textual attribution exists on the SVG description page is enough. Even if we do have to keep the old version around, it's still not a problem—just tag it with {{Vector version available}} and let it be. If bug 4421 is ever addressed, maybe someday we can merge all the various formats of the image together, so that the complete image history is preserved in a manner similar to the text history of articles. —Bkell (talk) 01:16, 24 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Thank you, Bkell, for your encouragement. I am currently using the VVA tag (vector version available), but just figured I should list the rasters here, since I thought they wern't needed no more. I don't know what will happen to them in the future, but I do wish we can group all the formats in the history like you mentioned. ZooFari 03:15, 24 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

- Question: I'm having trouble understanding. For this, and all other PNGs superceded by SVGs, should the PNGs be deleted or not? – Quadell (talk) 02:48, 29 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Keep The GFDL seems to require that the original be available, but I see no reason not to merge its history into this image. Why can't we move the image from one filename to another and then upload the new/better image to retain the original? — BQZip01 — talk 04:19, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Wait a second... why are we talking about GFDL here? The image license in PD for ineligibility. ZooFari 04:21, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- You have a point there, but at what point is there some creativity involved? Whoever created this obviously made the choice of what angles to use and how to illustrate the concept. I guess I'm saying keep based upon erring on the side of caution. — BQZip01 — talk 15:28, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Whoever is me (I'm the original author/creator) and as I pointed out already, I don't really care (meaning the file can be deleted). However in other cases the original author may not be around to ok deletion or wave his licence rights or whatever and since a desired format change potentially affects a lot files, we should have a general guideline, that outlines the appropriate steps for a format change (and what to do with the original). But the discussion for that and subsequent formulation of such a guideline taking all licence/database/whatever issues into account should not be done here but at a more appropriate place. Preferably some portal or project page that deals with image/licence issues anyhow. That's why i suggested already earlier that people interested in that issue should open such a discussion at the appropriate place. People mainly working/interested in making the desired formats available and who do not want to bother with guideline discussions can (and should) continue to do the conversions and simply leave the originals as orphans for now. As far as the discussion concerning the particular file goes, the original author/creater/owner states explicitly that it can be deleted. In other words close discussion here, delete the file and move the general discussion to a more appropriate location.--Kmhkmh (talk) 13:50, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

- Just uploading it as new version may not be that easy/obvious due to 2 reasosn. Firstly if i remember correctly WP or Commons is explicity discouraging you from uploading newer version, unless you are the original author. Secondly different formats have different filenames (extensions) in the database and hence you cannot upload them as a newer version of an old file, since that leads to identical names. Moreover in this particlular case we are talking about a now oprhanded File in WP and a replacement in Commons, so here the files are even in different databases. So as far as WP is concerned and to avoid orphaned files, the best of course of action is deletion. If for whatever reason somebody wants keep the old file, he should move it to Commons or tag for a move to Commons and cancel the deletion here. Personally however I see no need for the latter option. In any case that should not influence the desired conversion to better formats, so ZooFari by all means please continue with such conversions and the replacements in the related WP articles, independent of the original files being deleted, moved or just staying orphaned.--Kmhkmh (talk) 15:16, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- It doesn't matter if Wikipedia is "discouraging" anything (what is the source for that?). GFDL allows for any modifications, even improvement of such an image. The problem is how to handle the previous images. — BQZip01 — talk 02:10, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- not sure, why you would argue that WP policies or guidelines would "not matter". As already mentioned above i vaguely recalled that some uploader requester was stating that, however the current one does not do so, meaning my recollection was either wrong or that note is/was displayed somewhere else. Also note, that there was never an argument regarding the licence and that "derived work" (and as such technically format changes as well) is uploaded as a new file (rather than a new version of the old one). As far as the subject at hand is concerned it doesn't really matter, i was just oultining you why in such case (format change) simply uploading as a new version does not work, since currently WP treats a new format (different extension) as a different file. Meaning it does not allow you to upload a different name/extension as a new version. If you move the old file, as you suggested (I overlooked that part first), that would actually work technically, but then you would still have a format mismatch in the database, as the old jpg is now stored as svg. Which may not matter much from a practical usage point of view, but it is still garbage/inconsistent information in the database and may cause problems if somebody ever reverts to older image version or uses one for other reasons. Furthermore as pointed out above currently both files are in different databases (Commons and WP), so even if we decide to ignore format mismatch issues within the database and adopt your suggestion, we still need to move the old file to commons first and after that it can be deleted here anyhow. And how old/new versions and format changes are handled in Commons is something we cannot decide here anyway.--Kmhkmh (talk) 13:24, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

- As the creator of these files, I have no objection to the deletion of any of them, though I will point out that in one case your explanation of the proposed deletion is faulty. File:NZ-Wairoa_R(north).png should not be deleted as redundant to a standard locator map (it is not redundant as it has extra information that the standardised map would not have); it can, however, be deleted as it has been transferred to Commons as File:NZ-Wairoa R(HB).png. As such, in theory it should probably be listed separately (but since it's speediable, why bother? :) Grutness...wha? 23:09, 23 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
