- Propose merging Category:Sociology of World War II to Category:Cultural history of World War II

- Merge for now, without objection to recreate the categories when more articles about these topics are published. Marcocapelle (talk) 07:50, 4 January 2024 (UTC)

- Propose merging Category:FAQ to Category:Technical communication
- Nominator's rationale: Upmerge for now. It's unhelpful for navigation to only have two pages in a category. Mason (talk) 23:31, 3 January 2024 (UTC)

- The result of the discussion was: merge. (non-admin closure) Qwerfjkltalk 19:41, 11 January 2024 (UTC)
- Propose merging Category:Computer error messages to Category:Computer errors
- Nominator's rationale: Arbitrary distinction - the articles in both categories are about both the error message and the circumstances that cause the error to trigger. * Pppery * it has begun... 21:33, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
- i.e there's no relevant difference I can see between Out of memory (in the "error messages" category) and Segmentation fault (in the errors category). Ditto Guru Meditation (in error messages)/Blue screen of death (in errors). Ditto Not a typewriter (in error messages)/lp0 on fire (in errors). Unless you can explain why each of those pairs is where it is and not in the other category then they need to be merged. * Pppery * it has begun... 21:37, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
- Merge, it is a sort of a WP:SHAREDNAME issue, where articles have been collected together with the literal error message as the article name. Marcocapelle (talk) 07:59, 4 January 2024 (UTC)

- Propose merging Category:Museums in Malibu, California ( | talk | history | links | watch | logs) to Category:Buildings and structures in Malibu, California, Category:Museums in Los Angeles County, California, and Category:Tourist attractions in Malibu, California
- Nominator's rationale: Narrow intersection with only 2 articles. Merge for now. –Aidan721 (talk) 20:07, 3 January 2024 (UTC)

- The result of the discussion was: rename to Category:People from Puntland. (non-admin closure) Qwerfjkltalk 19:43, 11 January 2024 (UTC)
- Propose renaming Category:Puntlanders to Category:People from Puntland
- Nominator's rationale: Typically people categories are either FOOian people or People from FOO Mason (talk) 00:26, 26 December 2023 (UTC)
- Comment, "Puntlanders" is a plausible real-life denonym. Marcocapelle (talk) 07:37, 26 December 2023 (UTC)
- Rename - we use 'from' for people in subdivisions of countries (without exception AFAIK). Perspicax (talk) 11:25, 27 December 2023 (UTC)
- Rename but to Category:Puntland people. Puntland is not a subdivision like Category:People from Somalia by region, but a breakaway entity. The category name should match subcat Category:Puntland politicians, and if that form is chosen then it will also follow Category:Somaliland people. – Fayenatic London 16:38, 1 January 2024 (UTC)
Relisted to generate a more thorough discussion and clearer consensus.
Please add new comments below this notice. Thanks, Qwerfjkltalk 18:18, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
- Rename to Category:People from Puntland per original nomination. Main article clearly state that Puntland is a federal state of Somalia, and claims to be that. Although it may largely run its business on its own seen the current weakness of central power in Somalia, the situation has not much to do with that of de facto independent Somaliland. Place Clichy (talk) 13:48, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
- Rename per nom and redirect per WP:Category names#Residence. –Aidan721 (talk) 17:11, 4 January 2024 (UTC)

- The result of the discussion was: rename. (non-admin closure) Qwerfjkltalk 19:45, 11 January 2024 (UTC)
- Propose renaming Category:National Broadcasting Company to Category:NBC
- Nominator's rationale: This is C2D but because the title is ambiguous I'm bringing it here. While this category is using the full name, every one of the sub-categories is using "NBC" so this inconsistency isn't helping. Gonnym (talk) 17:57, 3 January 2024 (UTC)

- Propose merging Category:Universities and colleges in Germany by location to Category:Universities and colleges in Germany
- Propose merging Category:Universities and colleges in Brazil by location to Category:Universities and colleges in Brazil
- Nominator's rationale: Unnecessary layer. –Aidan721 (talk) 17:29, 26 December 2023 (UTC)
- Merge, redundant category layer with only two subcategories each. Marcocapelle (talk) 20:31, 26 December 2023 (UTC)
- Keep: unless the nominator also includes the larger Category:Universities and colleges in the United States by location and similar ones; rationale: the smaller languages have potential for growth and the nominated categories are helpful for inter language links.fgnievinski (talk) 12:53, 29 December 2023 (UTC)

- Propose renaming Category:9th-century French priests to Category:9th-century French clergy
- Propose merging Category:10th-century French priests to Category:10th-century French clergy
- Nominator's rationale: There's no reason to call the irish categories priests, when the rest of the categories are called clergy. Clergy is more broad. Mason (talk) 03:23, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
- Oppose - I oppose because priest is an official title within the Catholic church hierarchy as seen in this ref. The Eloquent Peasant (talk) 04:12, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
- But Category:Irish Roman Catholic priests will not be changed by this nomination, and there is no intention to change it in future. – Fayenatic London 16:29, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
- Support in principle. I am glad that this has come up, because I was intending to make a larger nomination of Category:Priests by nationality, which is a case of WP:SHAREDNAME among clergy categories mainly for Anglican, Catholic, Lutheran, Hindu and ancient Roman priests. Many national priests categories contain only 1 subcat for RC priests. Category:Sri Lankan priests contains subcats for RC & Anglican priests, which are already within sibling Category:Sri Lankan Christian clergy, and 3 articles on Hindu priests, so would be more useful if split to that and Category:Sri Lankan Hindu priests. I had tried putting all of Category:6th-century Irish priests into Category:6th-century Christian clergy but Mason reverted me on the grounds that "not all Irish people were Christian"[1] – even though all the member pages and subcats were about Christians. I suggest that renaming to e.g. Category:6th-century Irish Christian clergy would be more helpful in allowing valid parenting in the Christian clergy hierarchy. – Fayenatic London 16:29, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
- I'm equally fine with the alternative rename of christian clergy, as I agree that everyone in the category does happen to be christian. Mason (talk) 21:45, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
- Support conversion to Christian clergy, I agree that having Christian, Hindu and ancient Roman priests together in a category does not make a lot of sense. Marcocapelle (talk) 08:36, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
- @Fayenatic london, I assume for your proposal Category:10th-century French clergy and Category:15th-century Irish clergy will need to be merged into the rename targets, and thus need to be tagged as well. Is this correct? Qwerfjkltalk 20:01, 11 January 2024 (UTC)
- Category:10th-century French priests should be renamed to Category:10th-century French Christian clergy, not merged; the parent Category:10th-century French clergy should be kept separate, as it includes rabbis. Category:15th-century Irish clergy is part of a series in Category:Irish clergy by century with siblings from C12 to C21, which should all be nominated together for renaming with "Christian", but a follow-up nomination may be better than adding them all here. There is plenty of follow-up work needed, e.g. merging Irish priests to Irish Christian clergy; I intend to see this through. So merge Category:15th-century Irish priests as originally nominated, and rename all the others to Christian clergy. – Fayenatic London 11:12, 12 January 2024 (UTC)

- The result of the discussion was: manual merge. (non-admin closure) Qwerfjkltalk 17:32, 12 January 2024 (UTC)
- Propose merging Category:Writers from British North America to Category:Writers
- Propose merging Category:Lawyers from British North America to Category:Lawyers
- Propose merging Category:Medical doctors from British North America to Category:Physicians
- Nominator's rationale: This is an unhelpful category that encourages individuals being removed from their defining FOOian medical doctor category. This is not defining as people are not described as medical doctors from British North America Mason (talk) 01:04, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
- See Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2023 September 16#Category:Medical doctors from the British Empire for discussions about this same issue for categories diffusing by empire as well as concerns about removing people from the defining category @Bearcat and Marcocapelle: previous participants. - Delete. As previously, British North America was not a unified transnational polity that people were citizens of, such that "British North America" would have ever been considered their nationality — it was merely an umbrella term for a lot of different places that had their own separate nationalities, not one giant thing. A person from Upper Canada/Canada West or Lower Canada/Canada East prior to 1867 was very much still a Canadian, for instance — just because Canada wasn't fully independent yet doesn't mean Canada and Canadians didn't exist yet. It was kind of like "Leeward Islands" today: sure, that's a geographic term that encompasses a specific set of places, but all of said places also have their own more specific names and identities. You wouldn't say that a person from one of them was Leeward Islander, you'd say they were Virgin Islander or Kittitian or Antiguan or Guadeloupean or Puerto Rican or Montserratian.
All of that said, upmerging the contents doesn't seem to be strictly necessary here. JPL mostly seems not to have done that with this set, as far as I can tell, but he used to have a habit of incorrectly replacing Canadian categories with "British North America" or "British Empire" categories instead of merely adding the British stuff as extras — so some caution should be used to ensure that nobody gets completely decategorized here, but at least among the articles I checked they were all still in appropriate and correct Canadian categories and thus don't need to be upmerged to the stated targets. Bearcat (talk) 15:01, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
- @Bearcat: before 1867, was "Canada" in use as a synonym of British North America excluding the Bahamas, or was it used for Upper Canada and Lower Canada together? Marcocapelle (talk) 08:18, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
- Upper and Lower Canada, but what difference would that make to what I said? "All of British North America" wasn't a thing at all, it was just a geographic descriptor that had no more relevance to or bearing on anybody's nationality than "Leeward Islands" does. A person from Canada was a Canadian, not a British North American; a person from the Bahamas was Bahamian, not British North American; and on and so forth. Bearcat (talk) 16:22, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
- @Bearcat: it matters for people outside Lower Canada and Upper Canada while Canada did not exist yet as a political entity. Were people outside Lower Canada and Upper Canada considered to be Canadians too? Marcocapelle (talk) 19:02, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
- No, but they each had their own standalone demonyms and still never substituted "British North American" in any sense. And since every contemporary Canadian province already has its own "Pre-Confederation X people" category for people who lived there before it was a Canadian province, they never need generic "British North America" categorization since they already have more specific subcats. Bearcat (talk) 19:08, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
- Manually merge to an occupation in North America category, e.g. Category:North American writers, insofar subjects were not Canadians, per above discussion. Marcocapelle (talk) 08:30, 5 January 2024 (UTC)
- Manually merge individuals, then delete category coming here to comment on the BNA lawyers category. I agree with Bearcat that BNA is too broad a category, but I don’t think the BNA lawyer category should be merged with the even broader "Lawyer" category. There already are categories for lawyers in each of the Canadian provinces. I think the individuals who are currently in this category could be moved to those provincial categories, then the empty BNA Lawyer category be deleted. I’ve taken a quick skim and several of the individuals were called to the bar prior to Confederation in 1867 but continued to practise after confederation, so I don’t see any inaccuracy in putting them in the provincial category, even if the bulk of their practice time was prior to Confederation (eg Papineau, Cartier). Lower Canada / Canada East and Upper Canada / Canada West are special cases. I would make a sub-cat in the existing Quebec and Ontario lawyer categories for lawyers who practised in those provinces prior to Confederation and ceased to practise before 1867. They never practised in the provinces of Quebec and Ontario, but there is clear continuity in the practice of law in those jurisdictions, so sub-cats make sense. Mr Serjeant Buzfuz (talk) 12:27, 10 January 2024 (UTC)
- This would be a good alternative too, avoiding deletion and also avoiding that articles are moved too high up in the tree. Marcocapelle (talk) 21:48, 10 January 2024 (UTC)
- Here’s the Canadian lawyers category I mentioned: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Canadian_lawyers You’ll see that it has sub-cats for all the provinces: Pre-Confédération lawyers could be put in the appropriate provincial sub-cat: Nova Scotia lawyers, New Brunswick lawyers, etc., with sub-cats for Lower Canada in the Quebec category, and Upper Canada in the Ontario category. - Nominator's rationale: Upmerge for now. There's only one person in here, which isn't helpful for navigation Mason (talk) 00:20, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
- Merge for now, without objection to recreate the category when more articles can be added. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:51, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
- Merge to Category:Laotian people of Vietnamese descent only. There is nothing in Kaysone Phomvihane's biography that indicates that his politics were Vietnamese in any special way, so Category:Politicians of Vietnamese descent is not a defining characteristic for him per WP:EGRS.
