An apology

By the way, I apologize for assuming bad faith at your MfD for No Nazis. I hadn't seen your final response to me until just now (looking for the link where I'd assumed bad faith) and I have to say that your response was warranted. I was being glib and unfriendly. Having dealt with a mountain of trolls is no excuse. You clearly have a lot to offer the encyclopedia and I hope you continue to play an active role –– even if (or rather especially because) we don't always agree. A "News media in Madagascar" article

Howdy! So a little bit ago I started a draft about Malagasy news - User:Generalissima/News media in Madagascar - and while I was able to find good information about history, I've struggled to find good sources about contemporary situation. Since you have a lot of experience with writing about Madagascar-related topics, I thought I might consult your help. I think there might very well be sources I just wasn't able to find here, and I think there might be a number that are simply in French or Malagasy. Thank you very much for your time and your good work on-wiki! Generalissima (talk) (it/she) 17:30, 5 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Generalissima I’m so flattered to be asked! Your draft is excellent—thank you for writing this! I’ll take a look and see what I can find. Zanahary (talk) 17:35, 8 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Zanahary: Hi! I just wanted to check if this was still something you wanted to work on together :) Generalissima (talk) (it/she) 20:40, 9 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Salut Generalissima! I loaded the Talk page with sources last month—I'm currently in the process of moving, but when I free up again I'd be happy to work on adding prose to the article. Zanahary 22:04, 9 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, can I just clarify what you mean by missing many countries? Alexanderkowal (talk) 10:48, 8 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Btw I see you're interested in Madagascan history, do you know of any good resources for a general history? Tbf I'm impressed by History of Madagascar Alexanderkowal (talk) 10:51, 8 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes! A great overview is Stephen Ellis and Solofo Randrianja’s Madagascar: A Short History. Zanahary (talk) 17:12, 8 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, I'll try to remember to let you know when I've done the draft to their section which might be in a month or so Alexanderkowal (talk) 17:16, 8 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Great! Do let me know; I can contribute. Zanahary (talk) 17:17, 8 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Okay will do, thank you, I read the General History of Africa and the Madagascan history was dreadfully done, my only critique with Wikipedia's history is that the kingdoms on Madagascar don't have their own pages as far as I know Alexanderkowal (talk) 17:19, 8 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It’s crazy! The Betsileo and Sakalava kingdoms are both on my to-do for creating articles. Zanahary (talk) 17:23, 8 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That's great, thank you, when you do make them please add them to List of kingdoms in Africa throughout history as it's missing loads of Madagascan ones Alexanderkowal (talk) 17:26, 8 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Will do! (And btw, the word is Malagasy—“Madagascan” is still used only in biology, e.g. “Four newly-discovered Madagascan fishes” Zanahary (talk) 17:30, 8 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Are you interested in oral tradition? I've just bought Jan Vansina's book and want to add loads to the page, do you know of any Madagascan traditions that have wikipedia pages? Alexanderkowal (talk) 17:30, 8 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I am! Check out Ibonia (especially the How to Read a Folktale source), the "Malagasy Secret" section of Jews in Madagascar and Hainteny.
It’s (I think) an unusually complex society in terms of richness of beliefs, oral mythology, ritual practice and the assignment of ritual roles in everyday life. Maybe the origin myths recounted on Savika will interest you too. Zanahary (talk) 17:34, 8 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
thank you, I'm just amazed by how much depth they have, the traditions of the Ghana Empire are thought to have content from prehistory although much has been lost, I try to also talk about the oral traditions when writing African history Alexanderkowal (talk) 18:30, 8 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You might be interested in the Kingdom of Simien and Gudit Alexanderkowal (talk) 18:36, 8 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Just that it’s got lots of sections for countries within eras that say “this section is being written”, which is too unfinished for B-class Zanahary (talk) 17:11, 8 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That's fair, honestly I'd put it lower lol Alexanderkowal (talk) 17:15, 8 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Haha yeah it could also be Start-class. I put my own article Split of Christianity and Judaism, which is similarly full of holes, as a Start. Zanahary (talk) 17:16, 8 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'll put it as start as it is very much under construction Alexanderkowal (talk) 17:16, 8 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I think I'm gonna do the Swahili coast and Madagascar next, is it alright if I write a bit and do the base for the narrative and then send it over for input? Alexanderkowal (talk) 10:18, 25 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
For sure! Zanahary 12:52, 25 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, bit niche but I'm having some trouble with discerning when and how Zebu were introduced. I've seen some say Tamil merchants, some say the first wave of Bantu migrants c. 1000, some say they were imported from South India Kowal2701 (talk) 16:31, 7 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Kowal2701 I believe they were brought by Bantus—I remember reading something when researching for Savika about it. But if there seems to be a variety of theories, without an apparent best source giving a definitive one (or if it’s not clear that it’s a development in scholarship, e.g. the Tamil theory isn’t presented in newer sources), then you should describe the various theories. Hi, this is what I've got so far, are there any changes you'd make or anything that you would like to add? User:Kowal2701/sandbox/History of Africa: East Africa#Swahili coast, Madagascar, and the Comoro Islands Kowal2701 (talk) 18:04, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The next section from 1500-1870 is going to be Madagascar's time to shine, I've tried to give the Swahili coast primacy here prior to Portuguese conquest Kowal2701 (talk) 18:15, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Zanahary Hi, just pinging in case you missed this, no worries if you're not interested Kowal2701 (talk) 21:31, 18 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Kowal2701! I am definitely interested, but I am very overloaded with real life stuff right now. If you have any specific inquiries, I would be happy to do my best to help, but I can't do a broader review right now. Zanahary 08:33, 19 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That’s completely fine, don’t worry, I’m going to add it to the page now but I’m not happy with the Madagascar paragraph. I wanted to do a few sentences giving a cursory view of the antecedents of the groups but couldn’t find the information Kowal2701 (talk) 12:13, 19 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Btw, there definitely should be an article on Darafify imo, even if it is just a stub Kowal2701 (talk) 23:13, 19 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I totally agree! Zanahary 23:14, 19 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I know you've got a lot on your plate, but would you be interested in joining a wikiproject on oral tradition? Kowal2701 (talk) 17:33, 24 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Absolutely! Zanahary 19:49, 24 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Do you know of anyone else that might be interested? I have 5 at the moment, 6 is recommended Kowal2701 (talk) 19:57, 24 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe try notifying a bunch of wikiprojects relating to sociology, anthropology, mythology, folk tradition, and specific groups like Native Americans, Aboriginal Australians, and other large ethnic wikiprojects like China and Iran? Zanahary 16:10, 25 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Good idea, I'm currently notifying active editors who have created/contributed to oral tradition articles. It's more likely it's going to be a sub project to WP:Anthropology rather than an independent one Kowal2701 (talk) 16:14, 25 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I think it’s a fantastic idea! Zanahary 16:15, 25 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah I'm excited about it, I'd like to have some useful sources for people intrigued but not familiar, Jan Vansina's Oral tradition as history seems like a good recommendation. I 'd also like to tag different articles to different regions, as I imagine a lot of people would just be interested in a particular region Kowal2701 (talk) 16:19, 25 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I've sent Lemurbaby an email in a vain hope Kowal2701 (talk) 19:03, 4 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hah, I emailed her earlier this year. I hope she returns to us. Zanahary 19:04, 4 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
She probably did leave for a reason, but man she's done some amazing work, every Malagasy ethnic group article was practically written by her Kowal2701 (talk) 19:08, 4 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Are you able to comment

Are you able to comment on Talk:Lakana#Complete work of fiction? It may be that this is an article that should be put up for deletion, so if that is wrong, I really need to find other editors who will say so. Also, if there are RSs out there for an article on the traditional watercraft of Madagascar (I don't seem to be able to find any), I think that would be an interesting article.

Not a problem if this is not one for you, but thanks if you can help. ThoughtIdRetired TIR 21:26, 6 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I just wanted to say thank you for your work and inclusion of a sample of akazehe in the respective article. It deeply brightened my night to stumble across. AfD noms

Hi Zanahary, I don't usually work in AfD but I think you're noming a lot of articles for deletion lately that could clog up the system a bit. I also think that a lot of the articles meet WP:NSONG with it meeting the ranked on national charts criteria (granted it does say that it doesn't guarantee notability). I also think a bit more reasoning could be given outside the blanket "Fails NSONG, should be redirected", Especially with articles like Fire (Kids See Ghosts song) (which is a GA) or Epiphany (Taylor Swift song). Could you please reconsider some of them?

Anyways, thanks for the incredible amount of interesting DYKs you've made, happy editing! Justiyaya 04:21, 5 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Justiyaya, the WP:NSONG criteria is actually stricter than the typical subject-specific criteria: it says that charting, awards, etc. are just a positive indicator that a search for significant coverage will be successful—it doesn't say that charting lowers coverage requirements (as some other SSCs at least leave open to interpretation). Zanahary 04:24, 5 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Mhm, I'm not that familiar with how it is actually applied in AfDs. I do think the rate that you are nominating is faster the amount of time it take a thorough before search to be made and I'd be much more cautious about nominating GAs or B-class articles where another editor has clearly put a lot effort into it. Justiyaya 04:33, 5 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I assure you I'm doing research before nominating, though sometimes I get it wrong. Zanahary 04:35, 5 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Zanahary, I saw this comment from Justiyaya when I came to your talk page earlier, and seeing you've continued with the AfD nominations based on failing WP:NSONG, I wanted to offer my two cents. It seems that virtually all of these AfD noms (except perhaps a few that have missing sources not yet included in the article, like Femininomenon or TTPD) hinge on the same question: if an article does not pass WP:NSONG, but does pass WP:GNG because it has substantive coverage within album reviews, which policy governs? The 2024 AfD result for The Tortured Poets Department (song) embraced the interpretation that WP:GNG can be passed by album reviews even if WP:NSONG fails, but other nominations like that of Shadow of a Man by Leafy46 resulted in a deletion per WP:NSONG even despite substantive album review coverage. There is clear inconsistency here. I think it would be better and more tenable for the community if we resolved this discrepancy through an RFC, as opposed to such a large volume of AfD noms which all boil down to the same core guideline interpretation question. Would you be willing to consider pausing or withdrawing these AfD nominations and seeking an RFC clarifying WP:NSONG instead? FlipandFlopped 16:58, 5 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Flipandflopped I don't think it would be that helpful. I think notability is quite clear that even SNGs are not met, the article is still presumed notable when GNG is met. WP:SUBNOT offers an exception when either/both critiera is met and the article is unlikely to grow beyond a stub. I think the AfDs are largely due to the inverse, from presumed notability from SNGs being met from mostly the charts criteria and the debate is between whether there is enough information from the sources to merit an article. Justiyaya 17:22, 5 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
If that’s the case, then a change is needed, because having a policy stricter than GNG for songs makes no sense when any song that meets GNG is notable and kept. There does not exist a song that meets NSONG but fails GNG. In general, these AfDs go either way, and I think some of that leeway makes sense for the community and the subjectivity of notability. But maybe an RfC will be held in the future to change the SNG’s content or treatment, because the status quo is vague at best. Zanahary 17:24, 5 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
In the context of article review, the SNGs serve as a good way to quickly evaluate articles in a highly backlogged area. Sunglasses (Black Country, New Road song) is probably an example of GNG being met without charting. Most the articles you've nominated meets the charts criteria of WP:NSONG. Regardless, it's all worded with "presumed" anyways and I've haven't the experience in AFD in how it is applied. Justiyaya 17:31, 5 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
NSONG is quite specific that charting is only a positive indicator that a search for coverage will be successful—it does not contribute to notability. Zanahary 17:32, 5 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I guess, but so is how the lead is worded in probably notable with basically the WP:GNG criteria. I think that's what you are referencing with the previous message, most SNGs include that somewhere like WP:ORGCRIT and WP:BASIC Justiyaya 17:37, 5 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Notability is probably the most confusing part of Wikipedia and I rarely participate in deletion, especially on singles in an album. I'm still frequently confused after four years of editing so eh I could be wrong. Justiyaya 17:25, 5 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Zanahary, I saw you were giving people talk page notices - thanks! For transparency, I just went through the WikiProject deletion sorting page for songs and music, as well as everyone who had contributed to the two AfD nominations referenced in the post. Feel free to notify whoever else I may have missed. FlipandFlopped 18:15, 5 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Flipandflopped Thanks for the RFC, I don't know how I misinterpreted your message at the very beginning, sorry about that. Justiyaya 04:32, 7 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
No problem at all, Justiyaya. Feel free to give your opinion on the RFC if you wish, but also no worries if you don't feel interested/suited to contributing. FlipandFlopped 17:26, 7 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I'm curious as to why you thought that creating 52 AfDs in the same topic area in just over an hour was a good idea? Do you believe that anyone has the time or energy to try to answer all of these within one week, or was the idea to maximize your efficiency and overwhelm participants to achieve maximum effect? Do you expect anyone to believe that you attempted a WP:BEFORE check on any of these before moving at such a rapid pace? You might want to consider a less drastic approach in the future. BOZ (talk) 20:21, 8 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

These were really easy to do BEFORE on, and indeed I did it for each before nominating. No, it's not a tactic, because I don't think there's really any argument for keeping almost any of these. Zanahary 20:24, 8 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It couldn't have been much of a BEFORE check with 2 minutes or less between each nomination. See again my point about overwhelming participants, who may not have the same kind of time or energy to look through these that you did to nominate them in the first place, and keep that in mind if you would like others to view your actions with good faith. Regardless of whether you think anyone can come up with a good reason to keep an article, respondents are entitled to try, and doing this much in a short time makes it unnecessarily challenging for other editors to keep up with what you are doing. BOZ (talk) 20:33, 8 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I did the source checks before mass-nominating. Zanahary 20:35, 8 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Please don't miss my point about how this kind of activity overwhelms other editors. Even the people that would agree with you will undoubtedly experience frustration at having to go through each of these individually to post their responses. I see the first notice at the top of this thread points out that "you're noming a lot of articles for deletion lately that could clog up the system a bit" so I hope that you do not intend to keep mass nominating articles in this fashion. BOZ (talk) 20:42, 8 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Avoiding further debate on Femininomenon AfD page

Firstly, I want to make sure we don't get off on the wrong foot - I do sincerely regret any tension in our passionate debates in the past, as I'm sure I played a part in it by reacting negatively. I do admire your commitment to zealous enforcement of our notability policies and can see you are applying it quite broadly across a large volume of topic areas (I just am happening to overlap with you more recently because I am keenly interested in LGBTQ+ pop culture articles).

With that being said, I'm wondering if it's ok if I collapse part of our debate on the Femininomenon AfD nom for readability and that we can engage in further dialogue here so as to avoid clogging up the AfD discussion. I think it might be better to move to a talk page at this point. I did add a collapse template already, but if you disagree with how I set it up, please do just feel free to revert.

Lastly, I wanted to let you know also that I added this article from Stereogum about a mashup into the Femininomenon article as well (maybe this one will finally meet your NSONG interpretation standards - but that's ok if not too, lol). I really do feel strongly the song is notable and there are more sources out there, so I intend to continue my efforts to further improve the article this weekend. I will stay away from the AfD nom as much as possible now as I continue to enhance the article, so as not to WP:BLUDGEON, though. Cheers, FlipandFlopped 06:17, 5 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, well, you beat me to it by withdrawing. I appreciate that, Zanahary. I hope I did not pressure you into anything. I look forward to working with you in the future at AfD and elsewhere. FlipandFlopped 06:20, 5 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
No, not at all! If I'd seen the sources you found, I wouldn't have nominated the article. Zanahary 06:20, 5 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Flipandflopped, it seems that I withdrew my nom in response to the good work you did finding and employing sources to establish that song's notability while you were writing me this message. No hard feelings about tensions—it can be easy to get annoyed at people here when all you see of them is a narrow band of their behavior (in our case, it's my nominating articles that fall within your interests for deletion). Thank you! Zanahary 06:20, 5 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia talk:Notability (music) has an RfC for possible consensus. A discussion is taking place. If you would like to participate in the discussion, you are invited to add your comments on the discussion page. Thank you. FlipandFlopped 17:56, 5 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Zanahary, thank you for the record for your assistance in reformatting the RFC! I think we actually both agree that there is currently a lot of ambiguity about whether WP:GNG or WP:NSONG governs and that clarification is needed, so I'm appreciative that your edits have helped save what might have otherwise been a failed RFC.
