Marley Quote

Sorry for getting back to you a bit late. I had not checked the earliest provenance of the quote (maybe that's something that should be asked to the wider wiki community), but almost every source I checked - that was at least RS - attributed the quote to Marley. The best source I found just now, with the accompanying text as follows:

"Don’t be deceived by the war rhetoric — Marley was a peacemaker. He nearly gave his life for it in 1976. Political tensions between Jamaican PM Michael Manley and opposition leader, Edward Seaga, were thick. A peace-building concert was organised and Marley was scheduled to play. Two days to the concert, gunmen attacked his home, seriously injuring his wife and manager. Marley got away with minor injuries and defiantly went ahead to play at the concert without the terrified Wailers. “The people who are trying to make this world worse aren’t taking a day off. How can I?” he said thereafter, before going on self-exile in the UK till 1978."

- Jack Sebastian (talk) 17:40, 20 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Jack Sebastian: The article was posted in 2021; the quote was posted back in January 2009 by a retired Wikipedia user. If you can find one source that predates January 2009, then I can keep the quote. Yoshiman6464 ♫🥚 19:12, 20 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Can you explain your reasoning for needing an earlier source for the quote? My understanding that the litmus for inclusion of verification, not truth. I think it fulfills both, as the quote, in every appearance, is attributed to Marley. Even the National Geographic considers it to be a quote by him 1. - Jack Sebastian (talk) 14:47, 21 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

UTC)

Just because it was posted by a reliable source doesn’t mean it’s the correct information. Least we forget about the Brazilian Aardvark debacle from 2008-2014? The New Yorker covered it. It’s a great example of circular reporting. THAT’S why I need an article before January 2009. Yoshiman6464 ♫🥚 15:17, 21 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Respectfully, I would suggest that you both re-read my previous post and understand that - in comparison to other situations - OSE. I get what you are saying about circular reporting, but that isn't up to us. Your opinion on truth of the quote doesn't matter, and that is not meant to hurt your feelings, but instead to remind your that, in Wikipedia, THE LITMUS FOR INCLUSION IS VERIFIABILITY, NOT TRUTH.
If you are as deeply concerned about the verifiability of the quote, do more research yourself. I have provided several RS sources; you are completely free to research further, as in actually reading one or more of the books written about him. The quote is widely enough known that it might have turned up in some form there. I think it bears mentioning that in the article, one of the references are Issue 230 of Rolling Stone magazine, published 13 January, 1977. That seems pretty solid to me - and well before the Millennium, but the Help Desk might be able to check the magazine itself for the quote if you are concerned with the veracity of the quote.
If you want, you can suggest an RfC, A 3O, or jump on up to an admin board for their opinion on the matter. I have no dog in this fight, but removing fairly well-documented and reliably-sourced information does present a problem for me. Seeing as we are apparently in disagreement, widening the circle on the issue
@Jack Sebastian: I will let the admins know about it. Also, I read through the cited Rolling Stone Article that you mentioned. The purported quote is nowhere to be found. Yoshiman6464 ♫🥚 05:05, 22 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I had requested access to the issue and article from my local library, but I hadn't heard back just yet. Could you be so kind as to link me to your source for the magazine and article?
I've also emailed you about the admin stuff as well as reached out to some higher ups at Wiki-En about it, so I'm not going to talk about it here. - Jack Sebastian (talk) 14:53, 22 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Jack Sebastian: Thanks for reaching out to me and the admins. As for the Rolling Stones source, I used a website that copied and pasted the original article. I couldn’t find the quotation here.
In my discussion on the Bob Marley page, one user found a pre-2009 source. The Will Smith movie I Am Legend - found in this clip. Yoshiman6464 ♫🥚 15:04, 22 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the link. You're right; it doesn't seem to be there. And thanks for the link to I Am Legend clip.
I would ask that you strike the inference in the article discussion page that suggests that the quote was fabricated by a Wikipedia user or added disingenuously; it muddies the waters of the discussion, seems snarky, and isn't germane to the discussion, as well as for other reasons which I outlined in the email to you. I will confine my comments about Marley to the article discussion there. - Jack Sebastian (talk) 15:17, 22 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I removed all mentions of any Wikipedia users in my side of the Bob Marley talk page. And thanks for understanding my point of view on the subject. I completely apologize for coming off as antagonistic. Yoshiman6464 ♫🥚 15:27, 22 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I appreciate your actions on the matter and hope we can continue to edit collaboratively. I think Oversight will handle the rest. - Jack Sebastian (talk) 16:12, 22 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Introduction to contentious topics

You have recently edited a page related to gender-related disputes or controversies or people associated with them, a topic designated as contentious. This is a brief introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.

A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators have special powers in order to reduce disruption to the project.

Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:

  • adhere to the purposes of Wikipedia;
  • comply with all applicable policies and guidelines;
  • follow editorial and behavioural best practice;
  • comply with any page restrictions in force within the area of conflict; and
  • refrain from gaming the system.

Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics procedures you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard or you may learn more about this contentious topic here. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{Ctopics/aware}} template. Note: This notification was triggered due to your recent edits to Sweet Baby Inc.

A tag has been placed on File:PhilSaviano.png requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a non-free file from a commercial source (e.g. Associated Press, Getty Images), where the file itself is not the subject of sourced commentary. If you can explain why the file can be used under the non-free content guidelines, please add the appropriate non-free use tag and rationale.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Luigi

Forgot to put an edit note - I don't particularly care whether he's in the list, I don't know the policy well enough, but he should not be referred to as an "assassin" nor should his name be linked as he doesn't hjave his own article. ~Darth StabroTalk  Contribs 17:53, 10 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Darth Stabro: In my edit note, I highlighted this, per WP:PEOPLELIST - "If the person is famous for a specific event, the notability requirement need not be met. If a person in a list does not have a Wikipedia article about them, a citation (or link to another article) must be provided to: a) establish their membership in the list's group; and b) establish their notability on either BLP1E or BIO1E". When I submitted Luigi's name - I linked the article he was heavily featured in. Since you mainly have an issue with him being described as an "assassin", I think it's better to add him back as a "suspect". Luigi in question was also charged with second-degree murder in a Brooklyn court. I'll add Luigi back unless you want to discuss it further. Yoshiman6464 ♫🥚 19:10, 10 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Go ahead and re-add him - my main thing is about properly linking and phrasing. ~Darth StabroTalk  Contribs 19:38, 10 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Reagan (2024 film), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Variety.
