The general practice in math is to round the number up despite what hidden nationalistic motives anyone may have. Since you wanted to get into a reversion war with KissL I stepped in with the citation from the 2001 Hungarian census. --Stacey Doljack Borsody 19:03, 30 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Altaic?

Hi, The main problem is related with the "(disputed)" tag, cause this leads misunderstanding. There exists Altaic Languages but there is going on discussion about Altaic thesis. This "(disputed)" tag causes the misunderstanding that "--- language's being Altaic is disputed". For this reason, i'm supporting to remove the "disputed" tag. The discussion should be done either in the Altaic Languages page or maybe better in the Altaic hypothesis page. e104421 3 September 2006, 20:15 (UCT)

The sentence you inserted back is a pov style sentence (reflecting the opinion authors of the references), i paraphrased it in order to make article more neutral. E104421 17:06, 3 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The sentence is a quote from a source. Quoting sources does not make the article itself POV. --Stacey Doljack Borsody 17:09, 3 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Huns

Have you ever read the contents of the link pages? 18:57, 27 November 2006 (UTC)

I'm not the one including Attila to the list. If his name stays in the list, the see also link is appropriate. For the Xiongnu article, there exists a section related with Huns. I just wondered why you really insisted on removing Xiongnu. We can discuss the issue in more detail if you want. Sorry, maybe because of the language barrier, i wrote so direct. What i want to say is the article related with Xiongnu contains material related with Huns. The see also links does not have to be directly related with the article itself. They just provide additional topics. That's it. Regards. E104421 21:03, 27 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've noticed your engagement in List of Turks. Taht article is - like most of the Turkey-related articles - flooded with POV. I've removed a few names that have nothing to do with Turkish people (see [1]) - but the article still contains countless POV claims.

Hi there. I just wanted to drop you a note. You said you were frustrated by the reversions of the "main editor" of the Dingling article. There's an official Wiki policy on "ownership" of articles: Wikipedia:Ownership of articles. I'm going to drop a hint on the talk page of Dingling and see what happens. In the meantime, if you don't want to wrestle with blockheads, there are plenty of other articles that desperately need help. Thanks for writing. Cbdorsett 05:02, 28 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The New Central Asia project page

Hi

I revised (a bit radically) the navigation system of the Wikipedia:WikiProject Central Asia. You are a member of the project, I would appreciate if you would compare with the old page and give a feedback on the talk page. I am asking this because some old members of the project expressed concerns. Thanks. cs 22:08, 1 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Could you please write a stub here - just a few sentences based on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kurów ? Only 2-5 sentences enough. Please.

PS. Article about Kurów is already on 175 languages. If your village/town/city hasn't on PL wiki, I can do article about it. Pietras1988 TALK 17:32, 30 April 2007 (UTC)

Hun CA wikiproject

You claimed that there was a concensus amongst wikiproject members in central Asia group, but nowhere else I could found any of such concensus, since you're a participant there, please enlightened me. My main consideration is that the history of early Huns are clearly illegible and a myth which cannot be taken as a historial facts, I'm suggesting an wikiproject ukraine to be replaced central asia ones. Eiorgiomugini 07:27, 11 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I wrote, Until there is consensus. In no way did I claim there was consensus. I agree with you that the article probably doesn't fall within the scope of Wikiproject Central Asia and the same can be said for Wikiproject Turkey (see Talk:Huns#WikiProject_Turkey?). But any wikiproject members are allowed to tag any article they want. The article then eventually gets assessed and if the assessment team thinks the article isn't relevant it gets removed from the project. You can bring this up with the Wikiproject Central Asia assessment team if you feel so passionate about it. Additionally, no Wikiproject Ukraine member ever tagged the article. You could add their tag to it and request assessment as well, but the fact that they haven't done it yet tells me they think Huns doesn't apply to them. You should probably keep in mind that the Wikiprojects are not attempting to classify articles, but improve them. If having the Huns article be a part of Wikiproject Central Asia or Turkey brings editors who can provide more information about the Huns, this isn't a bad thing. --Stacey Doljack Borsody 14:39, 11 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

genetic/geneological

Hi Sborsody,

Actually, a lot of linguists are abandoning the term "genetic" because of confusion with genetics, now that mainstream researchers are starting to take interdisciplinary approaches to history, combining genetics and linguistics. please justify unusual spelling

Hi, I reverted your unusual spelling of "Uriankhai" again. In the editor note to my first revert, I remarked that I can see no reason for your choice of spelling, and you still haven't provided one. This is not a matter of good or bad faith, but a normal procedure. if one of your edits gets reverted, then you need to justify it with rational arguments, not just with an exasperated complaint in your own editor note. --Latebird 18:23, 13 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Overtone singing

At the moment, the sentence gives the impression that overtone singing "comes naturally to" the Tuvan people, giving the impression they are somehow genetically predisposed to be able to do this. Also, the parts of the brain which deal with language learning are very specific and different to cognitive learning in later life, and it may be misleading to say that this form of singing is learnt in the same way as one learns to talk. Being as the article makes these claims, it should be able to justify them with a source. If I am mistaken, and the sentence is not making these claims, then it should be rewritten as I'm sure I won't be the only one to misinterpret its meaning. Walnut pin Vilmos: online works of folklorist Diószegi Vilmos in English, through translation bots

Dear Stacey Doljack Borsody,

You wrote me that You would like that more works of Diószegi Vilmos and Hoppál Mihály were available in English. I have found a complex solution:

  1. searching an online work by Diószegi in Hungarian (there are some, whole books are made available), for example in Hungarian Electronic Library (it has also an English version): they have made both books Shamanism and also Tracing shamans in Siberia online free available (in Hungarian)
  2. Choosing the HTML (or txt) format
  3. applying an online translation webpage. Google's translation service has no Hungarian option yet, but Morphologic's Hungarian-English & v.v. translation service webforditas.hu works quite well. The page has also an English version where the labels of the buttons and the explaining texts are in English. It can translate texts copy-pasted directly, or HTML pages given by URL.

I admit that translation bots are far from perfection (even the name of Diószegi Vilmos translates to Walnut pin Vilmos), but are in most cases usable.

Best wishes,

P.S. Thank You for removing the merge template from "my" articles Sound mimesis in shamanhood and Sound mimesis in various cultures, and also thank You for making their title better.

The guidelines on middle names is to use them if that is what they are called in sources. His full name gets nothing in a google news search, while just the first and last name get plenty. Wizardman 00:05, 9 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Stacey

I think this is only adding to the confusion readers may have. This article should just be merged into the Goulash article. All three dishes (bogracsgulyas, paprikas, porkolt) are stews made by braising the meat with paprika. -

That thought had crossed my mind too. But on a second thought… Articles can be too long and too complicated too. Goulash is a big article allready. There is some brief comparison made in it about the different stews with further links, See main articcle, it is not that confusing. It’s quite clear... And pörkölt and goulash soup, are more or less big articles too, also containing quite a lot of information about those dishes. There are only a few genuine Hungarian food articles. Mostly it is Spätzle (csipetke, galuska) or halusky , Klöße (szilvásgombóc), Frankfurter-style sausage (virsli), Rouladen, Palatschinken (palacsinta), Punjena paprika (töltött paprika), Cabbage roll (töltött káposzta) Kaiserschmarrn (császármorzsa), Braunschweiger (májkrém), liverwurst (kenömájas), Strudel (rétes) and so on. All with a little note “this is also a a Hngarian dish”... If we would merge Pörkölt and Gulyasleves it would be even less Hungarian food articles left.- Warrington (talk) 10:49, 22 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Saffron again

I am having trouble with a suposedly American user who thinks that saffrron is a typical Hungarian spice. He is adding saffron all the time on Hungarian spices. I am absolutely sure that saffron is not a typical Hungarian spice. Need help!!!

see his new comment on Hungarian cuisine talk page and his last change in the article. He thinks I do not know about Hungarian food!!

Many of the authentic Hungarian recipes he includes use spices like saffron. One must remember that although Hungary today is only the size of Indiana, there are different regions of the nation. The food in the Dunantul is not the same as on the Alfold. The food in the far south and Serbia is not the same as the Felvidek (north) and Slovakia

Micro-Altaic

Hi, Stacey, By the way, I am not sure Micro-Altaic is as dead as all that. What I posted on the Altaic talk page is for the public arena, where there is a terrible polemic raging over whether Altaic is a respectable category or not - the need is to get the factual points across that (a) some linguists still support Altaic and (b) those who do all include Korean and nearly all Japanese. My personal view is that, if Altaic is a valid category, there is a very good chance that it should be subgrouped into a Turkic-Mongolic-Tungusic branch and a Korean-Japonic branch, representing the first split in the Altaic family. This would bring back Micro-Altaic, though it would be part of a larger family. VikSol (talk) 21:47, 30 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Komondor

Now do you think this dog is a representative Komondor? This kid have seen this picture on Westminster Dog Show article on Wikipedia and now he is editwarring that the Komondors are small dogs and this picture is absolutely correct, just because this animal has been shown at the Westminster Dog Show, and that means that this can not be wrong. First I thougt this dog was a Puli. I was arguing miles about this stupid picture on that talk page, that it is misrepresenting the Komondor breed, and gives the wrong idea about the breed, and indeed it does. I was trying to put a remark in the picture that this is a small dog but he constantly reverts it. And keers adding Komondorok.

Warrington (talk) 23:02, 5 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Now the kid goes and makes adits like this: (I copied his last version:)

Appearance, Size, and Proportions

The Komondors appearance is dignified and commands respect, people unfamiliar with the breed are often surprised by how quick and agile the dogs are.

The AKC Breed Standard states the following for size, weight and proportions of the Komondor:

Males 27½ inches and up at the withers; Females 25½ inches and up at the withers. Males are approximately 100 pounds and up, Females, approximately 80 pounds and up at maturity, with plenty of bone and substance. While large size is important, type, character, symmetry, movement and ruggedness are of the greatest importance and are on no account to be sacrificed for size alone. The body is slightly longer than the height at the withers. Height below the minimum is a fault.[3]

The Fédération Cynologique Internationale Hungarian Standard states the following for size weight and proportions of the Komondor:

IMPORTANT PROPORTIONS
The body length sligthly exceeds the height at the withers.
The deepest point of the brisket is approximately on a level with half of the height at the withers.
The muzzle is slightly shorter than half of the length of the head.

HEIGHT AT WITHERS
Males: Minimum 70 cm.
Females: Minimum 65 cm.

WEIGHT
Males: 50 – 60 kg.
Females: 40 – 50 kg.

The breed shows few faults in type and is largely uniform as it has always been bred with the same target.[4]

Who cares about the American Komondor Club standard? This is a Hungarian dog, and it is also as I found out a Hungarian national tresure, what adoes it matter what the Acf says. It shoul not be put there as a first referrence, and the edits are lousy, and he probably have never seen a Komondor all his life.

Warrington (talk) 13:45, 6 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Just let me add a clarification. The Komondor article is edited wery seldomly indeed, and I still think that it is strange that suddenly four newly created accounts which do not edit anything else but Komondor related topics, all of the sudden appear one after the other, and start working in the same direction, supporting each other in all ways. Because of one picture taken at Westminster Dog Show and used at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show‎ article.

And all of them are referring to a certain Komondor dog called Quincy, (which is said to be the one in that picture). All accounts try to adjust the Komondor dog article to make it sound like the breed is smaller and with a longer body, which means, to look more like the dog in that picture.

A dog the accounts and IP might be related to (thoug they deny this), or like this dog, which the accounts all call Ouincy, a smaller Komondor dog with a longer body than the international standards calls for.

User(s) repeatedly removed relevant and sourced facts.

Combined IP adress :70.121.204.57 and red link User:Meoconne assisted by User:Lynovella, repeatedly reverted edits at Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show‎ and Komondor dog breed articles, and removed facts from the Komondor article, such as: the dog breeds average height (30 inch), the fact that no upper height limit is given.[1] leaving only minimum height (and even other relevant and sourced breed caracteristics too). Both average height (sourced) has been removed, (several times), [5] [6] [7], [8] [9] [10] upper limit height (sourced) [11], [12] mentioning other similar Hugarian sheepdogs [13], which all of them are relevant information for this encyclopaedia article on this dog breed, and when I (and even ClueBot) [14] [15] [16] [17] put them back he keeps removing them again [18], and makes quite a few unhelpful edits instead [19], removing reference title, [20] without any consensus.

This is both Wikipedia:Edit war, and disruptive editing [21], [22].

This edit was also copright violation, an exact copy from the FCI Komondor Standards [23], poorly formulated edit added upper case The above mentioned newly created new red link user accounts are all editing the same articles, Westminster Kennel Club Dog ShowKomondor and nothing else.

They are all concentrated on the same issue at Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show‎ and Komondor dog breed, trying to adjust the article to show that Quincy is a perfect dog according to the breeds standards.

This user(s) was editing the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show‎ and the Komondor dog article as an IP adress, IP adress 70.121.204.57, than under one username, User:Meoconne [24] He or she probably also edits the Komondor article and talk page as User:Lynovella and continues in the same time as IP adress 70.121.204.57. It is also possible that the account User:Goldie102 has been created to support this issue around this dog, see edit [25].

They were trying to ignore breed standard, other sources and pictures presented in argumentation on the talk page .

This breed being fairly unknown, not many people check that article, or try to defend it from bias .

Kozhuuns

Hi, Stacey! Glad you asked.

I would actually be against such a move, because the current titles of the kozhuun articles are what they are per our romanization guidelines, which, in turn, are based on BGN/PCGN romanization of Russian; the latter being the most common romanization system used in the English language. So, as far as the academic standards go, the existing titles are correct.

As for the sources you mentioned, note how they all come from Tyva and are written by Russian/Tuvan speakers. I can very well imagine how they would not be aware of the BGN/PCGN conventions, nor are they expected to comply with it if they did, so, when writing in English, they would be using the spelling which sounds least alien to them—which in this case happens to be transliterated Tuvan. Problem with that approach is, what sounds least alien to them would not necessarily be the best choice for our target audience—the Anglophones seeking encyclopedic information. Hence the guidelines.

That said, I think it would still be a good idea to set up the transliterated Tuvan names as redirects to the existing titles—the more variants we can collect, the better.

I would also consider moving those articles from "Fooysky Kozhuun" to "Fooysky District". Kozhuun is not an English word (at least not according to the criteria laid out in WP:RUS), and it pretty unambiguously translates as "district" (not to mention the fact that the Tuvan law on the administrative-territorial structure equates the two corresponding Russian terms), so as per WP:UE, it makes sense to change that part. Before that's done, however, the kozhuun article itself needs to be merged into raion (which is an English loanword).

Anyway, I hope I addressed your query to your satisfaction. I'll be more than happy to hear more on this from you should you have further questions or ideas. Cheers,—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); June 17, 2010; 13:26 (UTC)

WP:RUS is actually very specific on the choice of the source language--see item 7 of the "Place names" section. The explanation given there is a bit lame and incomplete, but it is true nevertheless—geographic names are always romanized from Russian, because that's an accepted practice (and not just for Tyva). Our WP:UE→WP:RUS guideline chain complies with that practice, which is the way it should be. Furthermore, a handful of online sources (such as Tuva Online or a local news agency) are not indicative of "established English usage", especially considering the fact that neither of those sources is independent of the subject and that they likely operate using their own ideas of what "proper usage" should be. That may be fine for their purposes, but it certainly is not fine for ours—our guidelines are supposed to be rooted in specific, documented, and preferably widely adopted practices. BGN/PCGN romanization is one such practice. What Tuva Online et al. use is not.
We shouldn't be looking at each kozhuun name individually and cross-check whether it matches the majority of spelling used by some outside websites; that would simply defeat the purpose of standardization and lead to all kinds of different problems later on (what if Tuva Online switches to different spellings one month from now? What if different sources use widely different spellings equally? Which sources are acceptable to borrow a spelling from and which are not? The list goes on and on...). Does this help clarify my point?—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); June 18, 2010; 13:59 (UTC)
I was going to do that myself next week, but thanks for volunteering :) Would you be interested in doing the same for ulus (term) (and moving the articles about the Sakha uluses accordingly? Also, a quick pointer (in case you didn't know, it'll save you time and effort)—you don't need to change the existing redirects (and there are quite a few of those), because they'll be taken care of by the bot. Cheers,—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); June 18, 2010; 15:04 (UTC)
One can't rename a category. You need to list it on WP:CfD. If you are not comfortable doing it, please let me know, I'll list it myself when I return next week. Thanks much for doing the rest of the cleanup!—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); June 18, 2010; 20:31 (UTC)
Thanks. If you want me to do it instead, just holler :)
Regarding the kozhuun article, I am a bit hesitant to leave it there. It's not good to have an article under a title which is not even a valid English word. Perhaps, if the Tuvan administrative aspect is merged into raion and the historical aspect is merged elsewhere (a subsection in history of Tuva perhaps), then it would make sense to have a disambig there, but an "article"... I don't know. What do you think?—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); June 21, 2010; 19:20 (UTC)
Well, yeah, but existing poor practices are not a good enough reason to proliferate them even further. If there's a way to get rid of at least some of those, we should be pursuing it. With dzongkhags, for example, the existing article on the term could work great as an intro to the districts of Bhutan list, especially if one wanted to make the latter featured some day. This exact approach might not work for other similar articles, but there are always other ways to handle this if mind is put to the task.—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); June 21, 2010; 19:52 (UTC)
Let me sit on it for a couple more days and think. Unless some great idea shines on me, I'll probably merge it into the administrative divisions of Tuva article ("districts of Tuva" would just be its subset, and the "administrative divisions" deals mostly with the districts anyway), while retaining a short blurb in the raion article as well. In the meanwhile, if you have any other ideas, please let me know. Cheers,—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); June 21, 2010; 20:28 (UTC)

After mulling this over for the past week or so, I decided to add a source to the kozhuun line in the raion article and merge the contents of the former kozhuun article into administrative divisions of Tuva (to which "kozhuun" now redirects). I hope this is an acceptable solution. Please let me know if this works for you (and feel free to take your time if you need to ruminate about this for a while). If it does, I'll do something similar to the ulus (term) article. Cheers,—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); June 30, 2010; 14:23 (UTC)

P.S. I also meant to ask you if you think creating the articles about the nine historical Tuvan kozhuuns is a feasible task?—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); June 30, 2010; 14:23 (UTC)

I don't mean to hurry you, but are you still thinking about how to go best about the uluses or have you simply lost interest in this subject? Either is fine, of course, but I would appreciate it if you could let me know. Thanks!—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); July 20, 2010; 13:37 (UTC)
Honestly, I forgot about responding. I've been focused a lot on work (because I work for myself in my free time). I saw you merged kozhuun and I agree that the same should be done elsewhere. Sorry for not responding earlier. --Stacey Doljack Borsody (talk) 23:42, 21 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Not a problem; thanks for a response! I'll merge the ulus article when I get a chance. Best,—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); July 22, 2010; 13:10 (UTC)

Photos of notable Tuvans

Hmm, let me dig around, but I'm afraid I have no clue where something like this can be found. As for Toka and Kuular, it is likely that the PD photos of them exist (under the terms of commons:Template:PD-old-70), but, again, no idea if any would be available online.—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); October 25, 2010; 13:44 (UTC)

Notification: changes to "Mark my edits as minor by default" preference

Hello there. This is an automated message to tell you about the gradual phasing out of the preference entitled "Mark all edits minor by default", which you currently have (or very recently had) enabled.

On 13 March 2011, this preference was hidden from the user preferences screen as part of efforts to prevent its accidental misuse (consensus discussion). This had the effect of locking users in to their existing preference, which, in your case, was true. To complete the process, your preference will automatically be changed to false in the next few days. This does not require any intervention on your part and you will still be able to manually mark your edits as being minor in the usual way.

For established users such as yourself there is a workaround available involving custom JavaScript. With the script in place, you can continue with this functionality indefinitely (its use is governed by WP:MINOR). If you have any problems, feel free to drop me a note.

Thank you for your understanding and happy editing :) Editing on behalf of User:Jarry1250, LivingBot (talk) 18:50, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Need help in discussion for an article nominated for Afd

Hello Sborsody,

This is regarding a post of "Janos Boros" the Ex-Vice Mayor of Kolozsvar. You might not remember me, I am Kiran, an Indian by Szarmazas. My Magyar is a bit rusty, so I have to write in English. In 2009 there was nominated under Afd by some Romanian users. It was finally decided as "keep". It seems some RO Users have decided to nominate it again. I got the decision reviewed and the Admin was gracious enough to open it for discussion again. If you have the time, please do participate.

Tuva Task Force

Tuvan topics naturally fall under the remit of WikiProject Mongols, as Tuvans are Mongols. WPCA's connection is not much more concrete. If WikiProject Central Asia has an interest in the talk pages other than just by virtue of being Tuva's (former) parent, then those banners can be re-added, but your own reasoning should not permit you to remove the Mongols banner. Shrigley (talk) 05:14, 25 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Well, as long as you accept that WikiProject Mongols can have an interest in Tuvans, then I hope we can reach some agreement acceptable to everyone about the status of Tuva. Shrigley (talk) 05:50, 25 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I agree that such move (e.g. from Tuva Task Force to WikiProject Mongols) should not be done without proper discussion. Shrigley's move was kind of unilateral as well as being controversial, which I don't really support as well. Sorry if I haven't noticed the discussion at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Central_Asia/Tuva_task_force earlier (I never came to that page before), but I fully agree with your remarks there, including the point to keep the discussion visible. Last but not the least, I'd like to say Happy New Year to you too. Thanks a lot. --Chinyin (talk) 00:52, 29 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

HighBeam

Hello, I am sending this message to editors who signed up for the Women's History Month Edit-a-thon. Please help spread the word. HighBeam Research--an online, pay-for-use search engine for newspapers, magazines, academic journals, newswires, trade magazines and encyclopedias has agreed to give free, full-access, 1-year accounts for up to 1000 Wikipedia editors to use. HighBeam has access to over 80 million articles from 6,500 publications, most of which are not available for free elsewhere on the internet. Aside from a free 7-day trial (credit card required), access to HighBeam would cost $30 per month or $200 per year for the first year and $300 for subsequent years, so this is a wonderful, free, no-strings-attached opportunity. To qualify, editors must have at least a 1 year-old account with 1000 edits. Please add your name to the WP:HighBeam/Applications account sign-up page if you are interested. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 18:53, 18 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

WP Languages in the Signpost

The WikiProject Report would like to focus on WikiProject Languages for a Signpost article. This is an excellent opportunity to draw attention to your efforts and attract new members to the project. Would you be willing to participate in an interview? If so, here are the questions for the interview. Just add your response below each question and feel free to skip any questions that you don't feel comfortable answering. Multiple editors will have an opportunity to respond to the interview questions, so be sure to sign your answers. If you know anyone else who would like to participate in the interview, please share this with them. Have a great day. -Mabeenot (talk) 04:36, 26 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Motto of the Tuvan People's Republic

I am looking for the the motto(s) the the Tuvan People's Republic. It was "Workers of the world und supressed peoples of the east, unite!" until 1939 and later only "Workers of the world, unite!", in the Tuvan languag, of course You find it on the emblems here or at File:Coat_of_arms_of_Tuvinian_People's_Republic_(1930).jpg. Can you type the text as well as in latin as in cyrillic script (or use Google to find it)?--Antemister (talk) 20:24, 18 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The text is already in the old Tuvan latin-based script. There's no real standard for modern Tuvan Cyrillic transliteration to latin script so I use one that I think is somewhat readable for English speakers. --Stacey Doljack Borsody (talk) 20:54, 18 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
PYGY TELEGEJNIŅ PROLETARLARЬ POLGAŞ TARLATKAN ARATTARЬ KATTЬƵЬŅAR! PYGY TELEGEJNIŅ PROLETARLARЬ, KATTЬƵЬŅAR!
All the world's workers and oppressed peoples, unite! All the world's workers, unite!
Бүгү делегейниң пролетарлары болгаш дарлаткан араттары каттыжыңар! Бүгү делегейниң пролетарлары, каттыжыңар!
Bügü delegejniŋ proletarlary bolgash darlatkan arattary kattyzhyŋar! Bügü delegejniŋ proletarlary, kattyzhyŋar!

Oh, thanks for that fast answer. The first, bold text is the original text, isn't it? Can also write it in capital letters? Is "suppressed peasants" the literal translation of the text?--Antemister (talk) 21:06, 18 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You're right. Should be oppressed. The Russian translation is угнетённый. Arat is a bit idiomatic too. An arat is a nomad/peasant, but in this context it really refers to "people" in a non-national sense. Normal Tuvan words for "people" include chon, kizhi, and ulus. --Stacey Doljack Borsody (talk) 16:53, 21 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Tuvan language

Can you also read the tuvan language in mongolian script? What is the text here and at File:Flag of Tuvinian Peoples Revolutionary Party (1921).jpg and File:Tprpflag.PNG--Antemister (talk) 08:54, 29 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

As far as I know, there is no evidence that Tuvan was ever written with the Mongolian script. Tuvan was not a written language prior to the invention of the old Tuvan Latin alphabet. Mongolian was used as the administrative language. According to Manchen-Helfen in "Journey to Tuva", only 2% of the population spoke it: Buddhist monks and wealthy elites; the same people who very likely made that flag. I don't read the old Mongolian script. I'd be surprised to learn if the flag were indeed written in Tuvan with Mongolian script. --Stacey Doljack Borsody (talk) 14:41, 29 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, sorry forget that fact that any text from Tuva before 1930 should be written in the mongolian language. I asked those who speak that language, will tell you what they read.--Antemister (talk) 15:02, 29 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
BTW, is there another book in wetsern language about that country than OMHs excellent but 80 years old report?--Antemister (talk) 15:03, 29 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Can you add the tuvinian name (latin and cyrillic) of the Tuvan People's Revolutionary Party?--Antemister (talk) 19:39, 5 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I don't have any good answers for you at this time. I'm sure I have the Tuvan name of the TPRP somewhere, yet I can't recall seeing it. For books, I can only think of "Tuva or Bust" and "Where Rivers and Mountains Sing". --Stacey Doljack Borsody (talk) 03:33, 6 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Tuva, again

Once again, another question to the motto of the Tuvan's People's Republic: A german source claims that the text on File:Coat of arms of Tuvan People's Republic (1943-1944).jpg is is "All the world's workers and farmers and oppressed peoples of the east, unite!" Is that true, or is it the same text which appeared on the older emblems? See # Motto of the Tuvan People's Republic, where you already told me something about that topic.--Antemister (talk) 18:50, 23 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Well, there are only two subject nouns in the Tuvan sentence: "proletar" and "arat" and the word "east" does not appear. It sounds like the German source is being idiomatic. Proletariats are both industrial and farm laborers who don't own the means of production. Usually it is rendered just as "workers" in English. An "arat"[26] is a Mongolian word (arad) that means a nomadic herder, peasant, or commoner. Since an "arat" is not the kind of peasant most Europeans picture, but one tied to eastern lifestyles, in this sense it could mean "peoples of the east". Why make the distinction though?
Bügü(all) delegejniŋ(world's) proletarlary(proletariats) bolgash(and) darlatkan(oppressed) arattary(peoples) kattyzhyŋar(unite)!

--Stacey Doljack Borsody (talk) 20:20, 23 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

OK, your explanation makes sense. If several western and russian sources use this translation, it's better to ask someone who speak the Tuvan language. By teh way, is it possible to add the Tuvan name (both in latin and cyrillic letters) of the Tuvan People's Revolutionary Party?--Antemister (talk) 21:01, 23 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Tuvan Emblem

Again a question to Tuva's emblems. A talented graphist recently drew File:TUVAN PEOPLES REPUBLIC coa (1943-1944).svg. Is the text on that drawing really the same as here (right picture)? And for the left one, is "PYGY TELEGEJNIŅ PROLETARLARЬ POLGAŞ TARLATKAN ARATTARЬ KATTЬƵЬŅAR!" correct?--Antemister (talk) 20:23, 18 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Antemister. As you suspect, File:TUVAN_PEOPLES_REPUBLIC_coa_(1943-1944).svg doesn't say the same thing as in the heraldicum link. In [27] it says "PYGY TELEGEJNIŅ PROLETARLARЬ POLGAŞ CӨӨN CYKTYŅ TARLATKAN ARATTARЬ KATTЬƵЬŅAR!"/"БҮГҮ ТЕЛЕГЕЙНИҢ ПРОЛЕТАРЛАРЫ БОЛГАШ ЧӨӨН ЧҮКТҮҢ ДАРЛАТКАН АРАТТАРЫ КАТТЫЖЫҢАР!". Now I see where the German translation you asked about earlier comes from. "CӨӨN CYKTYŅ/ЧӨӨН ЧҮКТҮҢ" means "eastern". So this line says essentially, "All the world's workers and eastern oppressed peoples unite!" (oppressed peoples of the east). --Stacey Doljack Borsody (talk) 19:32, 21 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Population update project

Hi. The 18th edition of Ethnologue just came out, and if we divide up our language articles among us, it won't take long to update them. I would appreciate it if you could help out, even if it's just a few articles (5,000 articles is a lot for just me), but I won't be insulted if you delete this request.

A largely complete list of articles to be updated is at Category:Language articles citing Ethnologue 17. The priority articles are in Category:Language articles with old Ethnologue 17 speaker data. These are the 10% that have population figures at least 25 years old.

Probably 90% of the time, Ethnologue has not changed their figures between the 17th and 18th editions, so all we need to do is change "e17" to "e18" in the reference (ref) field of the language info box. That will change the citation for the artcle to the current edition. Please put the data in the proper fields, or the info box will flag it as needing editorial review. The other relevant fields are "speakers" (the number of native speakers in all countries), "date" (the date of the reference or census that Ethnologue uses, not the date of Ethnologue!), and sometimes "speakers2". Our convention has been to enter e.g. "1990 census" when a census is used, as other data can be much older than the publication date. Sometimes a citation elsewhere in the article depends on the e17 entry, in which case you will need to change "name=e17" to "name=e18" in the reference tag (assuming the 18th edition still supports the cited claim).

Remember, we want the *total* number of native speakers, which is often not the first figure given by Ethnologue. Sometimes the data is too incompatible to add together (e.g. a figure from the 1950s for one country, and a figure from 2006 for another), in which case it should be presented that way. That's one use for the "speakers2" field. If you're not sure, just ask, or skip that article.

Data should not be displayed with more than two, or at most three, significant figures. Sometimes it should be rounded off to just one significant figure, e.g. when some of the component data used by Ethnologue has been approximated with one figure (200,000, 3 million, etc.) and the other data has greater precision. For example, a figure of 200,000 for one country and 4,230 for another is really just 200,000 in total, as the 4,230 is within the margin of rounding off in the 200,000. If you want to retain the spurious precision of the number in Ethnologue, you might want to use the {{sigfig}} template. (First parameter in this template is for the data, second is for the number of figures to round it off to.)

Dates will often need to be a range of all the country data in the Ethnologue article. When entering the date range, I often ignore dates from countries that have only a few percent of the population, as often 10% or so of the population isn't even separately listed by Ethnologue and so is undated anyway.

If Ethnologue does not provide a date for the bulk of the population, just enter "no date" in the date field. But if the population figure is undated, and hasn't changed between the 17th & 18th editions of Ethnologue, please leave the ref field set to "e17", and maybe add a comment to keep it so that other editors don't change it. In cases like this, the edition of Ethnologue that the data first appeared in may be our only indication of how old it is. We still cite the 14th edition in a couple dozen articles, so our readers can see that the data is getting old.

The articles in the categories linked above are over 90% of the job. There are probably also articles that do not currently cite Ethnologue, but which we might want to update with the 18th edition. I'll need to generate another category to capture those, probably after most of the Ethnologue 17 citations are taken care of.

Jump in at the WP:LANG talk page if you have any comments or concerns. Thanks for any help you can give!

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Panel discussion at a recent Wikipedia & Journalism event.

The last Wednesday evening of every month, wiki enthusiasts in the San Francisco Bay Area will gather to collaborate, mingle, and learn about new projects and ideas. We have two brief presentations lined up for our kickoff event in downtown San Francisco:

  • Photojournalist Kris Schreier Lyseggen, author of The Women of San Quentin: The Soul Murder of Transgender Women in Male Prisons, will tell us about her work and how she researched the topic.

We allow time for informal conversation and working on articles. Newcomers and experienced wiki users are encouraged to attend. We will have beverages and light snacks.

Please note: You must register here, and bring a photo ID that matches your registration name. The building policy is strict on this point.

Find out more about resources your public library provides to help with editing (hint, it's more than just books!)
Special announcement (secret for now but come and find out more!)
  • Join in on an in person Wikidojo!
Are you curious how your peers approach writing a Wikipedia article? This exercise, pioneered by Wikipedians Nikola Kalchev and Vassia Atanassova in 2015 and conducted in many places around the world, will help us all - from first-time wiki users to veteran Wikipedians - share ideas, while building an article together. If you have ideas (relating to Bay Area history, ideally) about a new article we could build (stubs and short existing articles are fine), please submit them ahead of time to coordinator Pete Forsyth. (User talk page or email is fine.)
Announcements and impromptu topics are welcome, too!

We would like to invite you to this month's Bay Area WikiSalon. The last Wednesday evening of every month, wiki enthusiasts gather to collaborate, mingle, and learn about new projects and ideas.

We make sure to allow time for informal conversation and working on articles. Newcomers and experienced wiki users are encouraged to attend. Free Wi-Fi is available so bring your editing devices. We will have beverages and light snacks. We will also have a brief presentation for your education and possible enjoyment:

  • Former EFF intern Marta Belcher will discuss crowdsourcing her Stanford Law School graduation speech using a wiki. Please note: You should register here, and bring a photo ID that matches your registration name. The building policy is strict on the I.D. part. This also helps us figure out how much food and drink to bring in! Feel free to stop by even if only to say a quick hello, but you might have to give us a last minute call if you forget to RSVP. Europe 10,000 Challenge invite

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Europe/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like Germany, Italy, the Benelux countries, Iberian Peninsula, Romania, Slovenia etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. If you would like to see masses of articles being improved for Europe and your specialist country like Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon, sign up today and once the challenge starts a contest can be organized. This is a way we can target every country of Europe, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant and also sign under any country sub challenge on the page that you might contribute to! Thank you. --MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 21:09, 7 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

ArbCom 2020 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2020 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 7 December 2020. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2020 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 01:14, 24 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation to Local Wikimania Event in San Francisco this Friday

Hi!

Wikimania is happening and hopefully you're enjoying the sessions. While it's fairly last minute, you're warmly invited to participate in the local Wikimania-themed meetup in the Wikimedia Foundation office this Friday (tomorrow!). You will have to register in advance, but we would love to see more people from the WikiSalon community participate! For more information and registration, please check out meta:Wikimania 2022/San Francisco Meetup.

The event will involve hacking, teaching, learning, and celebrating and we'll have snacks. We will have the opportunity to watch live sessions at Wikimania together in the afternoon. The rest of the day we'll have opportunity to participate in the hackathon, and we may have some on-demand workshops/learning sessions.

In case we run out of space, it's first-come-first-serve so let us know soon! Hope to see you there.
