Romanization
According to the MoS (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style#Spelling_and_romanization), "if there is a common English form of the name (Tchaikovsky, Chiang Kai-shek), use that form instead." Sohn Won-yil is the case. It was romanized as since 1940s. See the caption for the picture of the following link as an example: https://www.trumanlibrary.org/photographs/view.php?id=25589
- As the google search on the name shows, that romanisation for that name is not "common". Rhialto (talk) 11:31, 14 December 2016 (UTC)
- That is because there are many 손원일s. But here we are talking about one unique person, 손원일 (born in 1909), who happened to spell his name as Sohn Won-yil. Do google search for Lee Seungman (이승만). there are 1,240,000 results. And do the same for Syngman Rhee, then there are 273,000 results. The number is smaller, but the president 이승만, did spell his name as Syngman Rhee, which is not a systematically romanized name. And the wiki article is under the name of Syngman Rhee.
Please discuss this on the relevant page for the article. And feel free to use a wikipedia signature. Rhialto (talk) 11:58, 14 December 2016 (UTC)

Indian navy
Made changes in the blue water navy discussion section. Check it out.
Describing Viraat as "old and unreliable" strikes me as both POV and probably less-than-factual in any case. On the other hand, describing her as "modernised and refurbished" is also an opinion and POV. Therefore, I think it would be more appropriate to term it a "2nd generation aircraft carrier," rather how FS De Gaulle or the Italian carrier (although she is older than those) is decribed. None of those units are possibly a match for Stennis or Truman and they dont claim to be, but they are powerful units in thier own right. Also, to be honest, you don't need a Stennis or Truman or even a De Gaulle to maintain air superority over Pakistan or Bangledesh , which is the primary function of Viraat Cheers V. Joe 14:50, 21 September 2006 (UTC)
My original text was to note it as having been out of service for repairs, giving exact amount of time comissioned and amount of time under repair, and letting the reader form their own conclusion. Our Indian friend refused ot let that stand, saying it was too wordy. Since that level of detail is precise and neutral (no one has yet claimed it was pov), I7ll put it back that way. Humour
Hi there; I am sorry, I had no wish to offend you or anyone else. As the edit log shows, I did wait six minutes before adding the tag. May I respectfully suggest that, if you are creating an article which may involve some pauses for thought, you insert at the top of the page the template {{underconstruction}}? This will indicate that you are still working; I am sure you are aware that a lot of less serious editors do create articles of only a few words with no intention of adding to them. Hello. In the process of adding a foreign language link to the light-year page, your bot seems to have randomized the alphabetical order of the foreign language links. Rhialto 14:19, 15 June 2007 (UTC)
- No, I'm afraid it's you who randomized it by your changes. My bot put the links in a strictly alphabetical order... Have a look at the page now please .Benoni 00:04, 16 June 2007 (UTC)
The current version looks sorted because I edited it. Here's some of teh source from your bot's last version...
ang:Lēohtgēar ar:سنة ضوئية ast:Añu lluz bn:আলোক বর্ষ zh-min-nan:Kng-nî be:Сьветлавы год
I fail to see how zh fits between bn and be in alphabetical sorting order.
Rhialto 05:17, 16 June 2007 (UTC)
- No, it was sorted before you edited it. Now it is not sorted anymore!Benoni 15:37, 17 June 2007 (UTC)
- zh-min-nan:Kng-nî is for Ban-lam-gu... It is not the code which is important but the name of the language.Benoni 15:40, 17 June 2007 (UTC)
- Seeing as how the name of the languages are written in a multitude of different scripts, it makes no sense to sort by that data field. Russian/Chinese/Arabic/Thai characters cannot be meaningfully be sorted amongst English letters. [[1]] suggests that sorting by the 2-letter code is a perfectly valid approach. Rhialto 16:17, 17 June 2007 (UTC)
- Well, but you should read it entirely:
"There are numerous way to sort the interlanguage links. The preference is for sorting according to either the two-letter language abbreviation or the name of each language in that language. The vast majority of articles are currently sorted the second way: by order of alphabet, based on local language, as described at m:Interwiki sorting order, so new articles should be sorted in that way." And all the bots on this wikipedia (and in the other languages as well) are programmed to sort that way. So the next bot going on this page will sort it again the way my bot did...Benoni 23:54, 17 June 2007 (UTC)
fine then. ill leave sorting to the bots, since they are obviously more intelligent than me Rhialto 07:04, 18 June 2007 (UTC)

Changing the names of the Maltese village articles
There is currently an ongoing debate about whether the articles on Maltese villages should be given their English names. Kyarichy has already gone and renamed a bunch of articles such as as Kalkara citing these changes from an old obsolete paper and http://www.geody.com, even though these names are no longer in use.
The naming conventions clearly state that foreign location names commonly used in English should be used as the article names.
It would be appreciated if you could assist us in this discussion. ~ ► Wykebjs ◄ (userpage | talk) 11:00, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
Please don't indiscriminately delete when you haven't been following the history of the discussion. That taklk page has been plagued by an anonymous IP ranter about the genetic inferiority of evil European Jews for a number of months, and it would have been much better to just revert his recently-added rant, rather than deleting a whole section which contains some perfectly legitimate comments. - In which article? Rhialto (talk) 15:26, 16 June 2009 (UTC)
- If you mean Blue-water navy, then no. Ballistic missile submarines are effective tools for controlling land (or at least, for control foreign policy with threats of ballistic missile strikes), but not for controlling contested waters. Their sole aircraft carrier has a history of reliability issues. Rhialto (talk) 16:11, 16 June 2009 (UTC)
Quinqueliteral (5-letter) roots in Maltese
Hi Rhialto! Could you maybe help me out: I would like to know if the Maltese language exhibits any roots with five or more consonants – also if they only exist only in slang. If it does, are these roots inflected as verbs, as nouns, as adjectives etc.? Are these inflections problematic? How does the National Council for the Maltese Language address these roots? How do speakers of Maltese regard these roots? Any information (and many examples!) would be greatly appreciated! Please write me . Thanks very much, Dan ☺ 12:51, 1 May 2010 (UTC)
You are receiving this because you have commented on either Autogynephilia, Homosexual transsexual, or Blanchard, Bailey, and Lawrence theory in the past two years; all such commenters have received this notice. It has been proposed to merge these three articles to eliminate WP:Redundancy, WP:UNDUE, WP:POV, and to keep the focus on the specific Blanchardian theory of M2F transsexuality (in contrast to Transsexual sexuality, which would be to focus on the subject in general). Please feel free to comment on the proposal at Talk:Autogynephilia#Merger proposal. -- 70.57.222.103 (talk) 19:59, 8 September 2010 (UTC)
This is regarding my change that you have undone on Feb 20th with comment "Undid revision 596300596; actually, it does: http://www.iau.org/science/publications/proceedings_rules/units/" -
- The content of this IAU site is either inaccurate or more likely obsolete. As an example - Astronomical Unit has an exact definition in metres (149,597,870,700m as of 2012) but the site shows old incorrect approximate value. It has the same inaccurate data for Parsec. So, my comment is accurate that lightyear and AU have exact definitions in metres. That is not (yet) true for Parsec. Even PI (3.14...) Parsec is approximately (but not exactly) equal to 180x60x60=648000 au, because Tan(1sec) is approximately (but not exactly) equal to 1". This makes AU and lightyear different from Parsec in terms of exact vs. approximate value in SI metres. Let me know if you still disagree or need more information - Wikipedia pages on AU and lightyear have accurate data and substantiating evidence and I can provide more if needed.
Please revert your-Feb 20th-undone and add my comment back into the page. Thanks.

I have no fault with your recent correction to the parsec article - in English-language countries, 10^12 km is indeed a "trillion km" and not a "quadrillion km" although it is a "quadrillion (or 10^15) m". The problem is that, in most countries where English is NOT the principle language, a quadrillion is 10^24 instead of 10^15, a trillion is 10^18 instead of 10^12, and a billion is 10^12 instead of 10^9, as noted in long and short scales. Hence the recommended solution is to use either an appropriate thousand / million combination (such as "31 million million km") or, even better, a less-wordy SI prefix as is already done in the next paragraph ("30.857 petametres" or Pm). In fact, the Spanish, who in numbers use a period for our comma and vice versa, call the parsec "30.857 mil millones kilómetros" (30,857 thousand million km). Although admittedly, you'll still see the American press refer to Congress as currently dealing with a "$14 trillion" deficit and neither a "$14 million million" or a "14 teradollar" deficit. Those reporters are not the Wikipedians we are. —— Glenn L (talk) 12:56, 14 December 2010 (UTC)
- That's great. I really feel those people who don't have English as their first language have every opportunity to use localised versions of WP in their own language. The English WP is written for people whose native language is English. WP is primarily a facts repository, not a language-learning tool, and so should not need to be simplified to account for non-native speakers, especially since WP also exists 9or can exist) in many other languages, including theirs. Twenty-foot equivalent unit: Equivalence
Looking at your recent change to the TEU article, I wonder whether it might be better to use a consistent number of significant figures as below rather than the currently inconsistent 1 or zero decimal places since, as is stated in the article, "the TEU is an inexact unit, and hence cannot be converted precisely into other units."

Widening table for class=wikitable
The class=wikitable has another problem, with the narrowed width reduced to 98%. I have updated the essay text and added an example in essay "wp:98 percent table width anomaly". If wikitables are nested, then the 98% width leaves margin space for an outer table. However, for large tables, the 98% width should be overridden by style="margin-right:0" or such, to allow more space per WP:ACCESS for readers with narrow windows and larger text size. Thanks for asking about this issue. -Wikid77 (talk) 05:18, 10 May 2012 (UTC)

"Not a real word"
I'm sure you're well meaning enough, but it does create less needless work for the rest of us if you look things up before you "correct" them. "Stade" is not only an English word, it's four separate ones. (Of which the primary is the anglicized form of the Greek stadion which is not identical to the Old English furlong, which was based on a separate rod/acre system.) Granted, it's increasingly common to simply leave the Greek untranslated, but go run the numbers at Google Scholar and ngram and post it to the talk page. — LlywelynII 15:46, 6 April 2015 (UTC)
"stade" exists only as an archaic and obsolete anglicisation of the ancient Greek unit that nowadays is translated as the stadion. It has no more place in a modern encyclopaedia as words such as "verily" or "forsooth". Which is to say, only when writing an article about the word itself. Rhialto (talk) 13:51, 7 April 2015 (UTC)

For precise conversions, this "xconvert" will show 1 inch as 2.54 cm, 1 US gallon as 128 oz, 1 mile as 1.609344 km or 1 metre (39.370078740157 in), and 1 mile (160,934.4 cm) not as now "160,000 cm". Other examples for the proposed "{xconvert}" template:
- {{xconvert|1|m|ft}} —>
- {{xconvert|1|uspt|ml}} —>
- {{xconvert|1|km|mi}} —
- {{xconvert|1|atm|psi}} —>
- {{xconvert|14.7|psi|kPa}} —>
- {{xconvert|1|AU|km}} —>
See more examples at: User:Wikid77/Template:Xconvert. -Wikid77 (talk) 18:23, 26 February 2017 (UTC)
What level are you?
I found your name at Category:User js (probably because you posted the corresponding userbox on your user page), in the level-unspecified list of JavaScript programmers.
I was wondering how experienced you are at JavaScript, and whether you might be interested in getting involved with developing user scripts, hobnobbing with other JavaScript programmers, and organizing and improving JavaScript articles and support pages.
We do all of that and more at the JavaScript WikiProject.
Scripts undergoing development, and the state of JavaScript on Wikipedia, are discussed on the talk page.
For an overview of JavaScript coverage on Wikipedia, see Draft:Outline of JavaScript and Index of JavaScript-related articles. For everything on user scripts, see User:The Transhumanist/Outline of scripts.
The WikiProject also organizes every resource it can find about JavaScript out there, such as articles, books, tutorials, etc. See our growing Reference library. If you know of any good ones, please add them.
If you would like to join the JavaScript WikiProject, feel free to add your name to the participants list.
Hope to see you there! The Transhumanist 16:58, 12 May 2017 (UTC)
