User talk:RealGrouchy

If you want to contact me, use this page. If you respond to something I said in a talk page or on your user page, I probably won't notice it for a few months, if ever, unless you let me know about it here. This also goes for messages on sister projects (most of my user pages there redirect here). Thanks, RG>

Hello RealGrouchy, welcome to Wikipedia. Just noticed your useful edits to United Nations and Politics of (country).

Here are some useful links if you need any help:

You can sign posts on talk pages by entering four tildes (~~~~~); the system automatically inserts your username with a datestamp. Also, don't hit the Save button when you can use Show Preview; fewer interim versions makes the Page histories much easier to read. If you have any questions, see Wikipedia:Help, post a question to the Village pump, or leave a message on my Talk page. Enjoy, -- Viajero 18:18, 7 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Thanks. I already use the preview page, but I was making large blocks of changes and wanted to save to prevent data loss. I also wanted to take a break. In other cases, I am going over many pages making similar changes (i.e. redirecting links to a specific page), and as such only make a minor edit.
Was there something in particular that you believe *needs help*? Politics of (country) was my first page (and I then moved it to the proper location, List of politics by country articles, in a merged version)

Alternative Transportation Movement

Well, by putting ATM under Ecology, you're probably referring to renewable energy technologies, as mentioned in Automobile#Renewable_energy_and_the_future. Look under Transport for many issues which can be considered "alternatives" to those presently in use. Incidentally, if you intend to create a page with a specific name, you can create the page before you link something to it. (SEWilco 05:01, 30 May 2004 (UTC))[reply]

Perhaps, but I think that there is a lot more information about the efforts of people to get people to stop driving their cars, more than just a side-note in Automobile or Transport. There have been many, many people and events relating to this, and countless organizations devoted to it. RealGrouchy 15:15, 30 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Minor edits

Hi RealGrouchy. I thought minor edits are only fixing typos or so. In my view, adding a category is a borderline case. I sometimes mark it minor, sometimes not. For me, its one less click, which makes a difference when adding a category to a lot of articles. I also don't use the "minor by default". But thanks anyway for the notice. I usually check out changed articles on my watchlist regardless if minor or not. Happy editing -- Chris 73 | Talk 14:27, 10 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Stanley Cup

It may be a tournament close to your hearts, I'm not taking away that fact. Neither am I foul mouthing any sport. I am also aware of the fact that Canadians hate to be confused with Americans. You must be wondering what prompted me to pair the two countries together. Well, I had to mention it, if I had said that it is an intra-country event, some wise cracks would have pointed out that USA and Canada are two independant countries.

It may be high profiled in the mentioned countries but it isn't an international event because the teams are not officially representing their countries. There are many sports such as these, where other nations compete in a country's premier sporting event, as a separate team(s), but they are of course, unofficial matches, and hence, are not mentioned in Wikipedia main page news.

I think you have read all the points that I have mentioned. I never said delete the news article altogether, it should be in the expanded news page, not the top page. Nichalp 19:46, Jun 12, 2004 (UTC)

New Wikiproject

Hi there, just a quick note to let you know that we've started a new wikiproject! WikiProject Ottawa aims to expand the amount of articles in Ottawa, and of the articles that are there, take them from stubs to something worthy of being a feature article. We hope you'll stop by and sign up! --Spinboy 03:54, 3 Apr 2005 (UTC)

who is double-checking the validity of votes, and proper voter registration?

We all do! I have started but I don't feel very well (I have a cold) and there are so many of them. Prehaps you could help out - currently I have only taken out "red links" and votes not signed with a wikimedia users.

Hello, Will you be my friend?

Hi, Just looking around. I noticed you said something about OCtranspo hybrid bus. (are you a member of EVCO by any chance because that's what we've been talking about) http://www.evco.ca . I support your idea that there is many other vehicles out there. Now however we have a dilema. hybrid transport and hybrid vehicle... meuh? Anyways cheers. --Pat 05:32, 4 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Alex Munter

Good work on the Alex Munter article, especially getting a photo. Free images of Canadian political figures are quite rare. I might consider cropping the orange section on top of him, however, as it is somewhat distracting. - SimonP 19:33, 24 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Vandal templates

Regarding our many vandal templates, I agree they are a pain in the ass. I'd suggest The RC patrol script listed at WP:RCP#Rollback_scripts. It allows quick and easy reporting of vandals to AIV. I can't recommend it enough. The next script will also give you a rollback button which is handy for dealing with vandals (though not good faith edits). Cheers!--Kchase T 21:08, 17 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, thanks for the link! I probably won't use the script, but now I at least know that I can go to #vandalism-en-wp to report vandalism. Usually I don't mind manually reverting, but this guy had a few dozen edits at least, so I wanted to report it to a higher authority. Cheers. --RealGrouchy 21:31, 17 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I saw that you signed up as a participant. Would you be interested in helping to get the Chapter going? We're seeking approx. 10 members to help out get things rolling. Leave a note on the WM Can page or on my talk page. v:User:Historybuff 18:17, 13 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Took a bit of detective work, but I think it was you that left a message about being too busy to help out at this time with Wikimedia Canada. You did remove your name from the participant list, but I think I got your info from a talk entry you had left. Sorry for the bother, and do feel free to drop by and join/participate/lurk when you do have time in the future. v:User:Historybuff 23:01, 15 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Spoken article quality assessment

Thanks for contributing to the spoken project, RealGrouchy. I've made an attempt at constructive criticism of your first spoken article in this review, which hopefully you'll find useful. To sum it up, you've got all the technical stuff right, ie. there's no background noise, voice is clean-sounding (your mic really doesn't sound crappy at all) and the level's good. On top of that, you have a great narration style; pacing is even throughout, enunciation is clear, there are pauses in the right places, etc. In short, you seem to be pretty good at this.

Don't forget to add your recordings to Wikipedia:Spoken articles. Cheers! -- Macropode 05:59, 1 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks so much for pointing out the problems with that article. You listed it in exactly the right place, and the copyright violation has been removed. I wanted to ask you, for future cases when you may list an article at WP:CP, to please tag it either with {{copyvio}} or {{copypaste}}, as appropriate. (Steps for using either can be read by following the wikilinks.) That gives the contributors to the article a chance to address it before an administrator arrives to intervene. It's not a tremendous problem in this case, as the copyright violation could be removed rather easily and it did not involve the entire article, but there are cases where an administrator can't take action until the article has been tagged for 7 days, and that can delay closure. Anyway, thanks again for pointing it out. We do appreciate it. :) --Moonriddengirl (talk) 12:46, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Notification: changes to "Mark my edits as minor by default" preference

Hello there. This is an automated message to tell you about the gradual phasing out of the preference entitled "Mark all edits minor by default", which you currently have (or very recently had) enabled.

On 13 March 2011, this preference was hidden from the user preferences screen as part of efforts to prevent its accidental misuse (consensus discussion). This had the effect of locking users in to their existing preference, which, in your case, was true. To complete the process, your preference will automatically be changed to false in the next few days. This does not require any intervention on your part and you will still be able to manually mark your edits as being 'minor'. The only thing that's changed is that you will no longer have them marked as minor by default.

For established users such as yourself there is a workaround available involving custom JavaScript. If you are familiar with the contents of WP:MINOR, and believe that it is still beneficial to the encyclopedia to have all your edits marked as such by default, then this discussion will give you the details you need to continue with this functionality indefinitely. If you have any problems, feel free to drop me a note.

Thank you for your understanding and happy editing :) Editing on behalf of User:Jarry1250, LivingBot (talk) 18:37, 14 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

We wanted to let you know that we've used one of your pictures in a project of ours: http://litpics.tumblr.com/post/8187344777/lit-in-the-ranks-of-the-c-i-v-by-erskine

We created a computer program to generate random pairings of sentences from public domain texts and public domain / creative commons images. Some of the pictures we've selected come from the Wikipedia Commons. All the pictures we select ourselves, but the pairings and the text are random. Of these pairings that are generated, we only post the most interesting combinations.

We welcome any feedback about our site.

Thanks for sharing your pictures,

Invite to Join WikiProject for Spoken Wikipedia

Hi RealGrouchy! I am Galendalia and I have revived the WikiProject for Spoken Wikipedia. I noticed that you signed up at some point to be a participant and as I am reviving this project, one of my tasks is to get the participant list in order. Would you please go to the Participants List and add your name and language(s) you speak? If you are already there and do not want to be, please move yourself to the inactive list at the bottom of the page. If you want to remain, please put remain next to your name (this way you are not moved). If I do not see anything from you by May 30, 2020, I will move you to the inactive participant list. It would also be great if you would be willing to join the task force for Pronunciation that would be awesome, as there are troublesome words we run into.

Thank you for considering joining us. If you decide to leave, I will be sad to see you leave as so many people have done a great job on the recordings and any work you have done makes a significant difference.
