Gavin. Thanks for your message and for expanding the stub on Holbrook Gaskell II. I was interested to read that there were more than 3 HGs. I used "II" and "III" because I had been writing a series of articles on the pioneers of the chemical industry in Widnes and Hardie's book refers to them as I, II and III — so I copied him. By the way could you add inline citations to all your additions (including what you have written about HGII). (You also seem to have lost my references but I will replace them when I get the time.) It seems a bit excessive when one is new to Wikipedia, but in the long-term as articles get expanded, if inline citations are not there, the article has to be re-written more or less from scratch. You can get advice on this from WP:CITE (or more or less copy what I have done — that's how I have learnt a lot about the necessary techniques). In addition if you write something about yourself on your user page, you will get an official welcome and some guidance on where to go for the information you will need. Best wishes. Peter. Peter I. File permission problem with File:Photo of Hillary Lappin-Scott.jpg
Thanks for uploading File:Photo of Hillary Lappin-Scott.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.
If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either
- make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
- Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.
If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.
If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read the Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 19:29, 25 July 2013 (UTC)
Possibly unfree File:Photo of Hillary Lappin-Scott.jpg
A file that you uploaded or altered, File:Photo of Hillary Lappin-Scott.jpg, has been listed at Wikipedia:Possibly unfree files because its copyright status is unclear or disputed. If the file's copyright status cannot be verified, it may be deleted. You may find more information on the file description page. You are welcome to add comments to its entry at the discussion if you object to the listing for any reason. Thank you. Stefan2 (talk) 21:35, 27 December 2013 (UTC)
License tagging for File:Microbiology Society.png
Thanks for uploading File:Microbiology Society.png. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information.
To add a tag to the image, select the appropriate tag from this list, click on this link, then click "Edit this page" and add the tag to the image's description. If there doesn't seem to be a suitable tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia. For help in choosing the correct tag, or for any other questions, leave a message on Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Thank you for your cooperation. --ImageTaggingBot (talk) 00:05, 23 September 2015 (UTC)
Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Contacting Editors from the Ada Lovelace Editathons
Hi GavinThomas,
I hope you don’t mind me contacting you via your talk page. I’m a new Editor to Wikipedia, part of a small research team based at the University of Birmingham in the UK. I’m getting in touch as we’re trying to contact all the Editors who were involved in the Ada Lovelace Editathons in Oxford or London. If you have been, or still are, involved in editing, whatever the scale of your involvement, we would be very grateful for the opportunity to talk to you about your experiences. In the first instance, we’ve set up a short (10 minute) survey, which you can access via my User Talk Pages. If you are interested in helping with our research project, please can you drop me a line?
Thanks, RuthPage (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 08:56, 11 June 2016 (UTC)

Wikipedia and copyright
Hello GavinThomas, and welcome to Wikipedia. All or some of your addition(s) to Microbial Genomics (journal) have been removed, as it appears to have added copyrighted material without evidence of permission from the copyright holder. While we appreciate your contributing to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from your sources to avoid copyright or plagiarism issues here.
- You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and cite the source using an inline citation. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
- Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. (There is a college-level introduction to paraphrase, with examples, hosted by the Online Writing Lab of Purdue.) Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
- Our primary policy on using copyrighted content is Wikipedia:Copyrights. You may also want to review Wikipedia:Copy-paste.
- If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. However, there are steps that must be taken to verify that license before you do. See Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
- In very rare cases (that is, for sources that are public domain or compatibly licensed), it may be possible to include greater portions of a source text. However, please seek help at the help desk before adding such content to the article. 99.9% of sources may not be added in this way, so it is necessary to seek confirmation first. If you do confirm that a source is public domain or compatibly licensed, you will still need to provide full attribution; see Wikipedia:Plagiarism for the steps you need to follow.
- Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you can, but please follow the steps in Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia.
It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. /wiae /tlk 20:37, 11 April 2017 (UTC)
Microbial Genomics (journal)
Hi GavinThomas. I saw that User:Blythwood put a Speedy Deletion tag on the above article, but I don't think it was correct, as the journal is peer reviewed and as such is notable within Wikipedia and deserves an article, so I have removed it Please ensure the article has all copyright material removed. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously and if the article is not cleaned up quickly it may still be deleted per WP:AFD by User:Blythwood. scope_creep (talk) 23:14, 11 April 2017 (UTC)
- Note to article creator and to Scope creep: being peer-reviewed is absolutely not sufficient to declare a journal notable. I have looked at this journal and as far as I can see, it fails all criteria of WP:NJournals (the inclusion criteria for academic journals) and WP:GNG (the general notability criteria). I have put a "PROD" template on the article and will take it to AfD should that be removed. Thanks. --Randykitty (talk) 13:55, 12 April 2017 (UTC)
The article Microbial Genomics (journal) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
- Non-notable new journal. Not indexed in any selective databases, no independent sources. Does not meet WP:NJournals or WP:GNG.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Randykitty (talk) 13:51, 12 April 2017 (UTC)
Microbial Genomics (journal)
Hi GavinThomas. I sorry, but I understand that your journal article is heading for the WP:AFD for deletion, since the last PROD tag has been removed. The fact that it is peer reviewed does not make it notable apparently, which I thought it would have. Sorry for misleading you.scope_creep (talk) 00:26, 13 April 2017 (UTC)
Nomination of Microbial Genomics (journal) for deletion
A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Microbial Genomics (journal) is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.
The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Microbial Genomics (journal) until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.
Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article. Randykitty (talk) 13:31, 13 April 2017 (UTC)
- Hi, I understand your frustration, article creation is one of the harder things to do here. Meanwhile, I've brought the article on mBio up to our standards, removing all the promotional stuff and a lot of unencyclopedic trivia. Compare it now to the article on Microbial Genomics... Some good tips on how to write good articles on scientific journals can be found in our journal article writing guide. Hope you won't give up. WP can be frustrating, but in the end also very rewarding. --Randykitty (talk) 15:58, 15 April 2017 (UTC)
