WikiCup 2018

So the 2017 WikiCup has come to an end. Congratulations to the winner, to the other finalists and to all those who took part. 177 contestants signed up, more than usual, but not all of them submitted entries in the first round. Were editors attracted by the cash prizes offered for the first time this year, or were these irrelevant? Do the rules and scoring need changing for the 2018 WikiCup? If you have a view on these or other matters, why not join in the WikiCup discussion about next year's contest? US Nationals

Given that you attended the previous nationals, I wonder if you're attending the US Nationals currently going on.--Jasper Deng (talk) 08:49, 2 January 2018 (UTC)

Noooo, rub it in, why doncha? ;) I wish, maybe next year. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 20:58, 2 January 2018 (UTC)
Oh I was wondering if you were attending because I am attending almost all the events this year (it's an Olympic year and friends are watching too). Maybe you'll get to see the next one!--Jasper Deng (talk) 16:38, 3 January 2018 (UTC)
Oh dang, even more rubbing in! You mean I'm also missing meeting a fellow Wikipedian? Oh that really sucks! ;) I'm watching it tonight, after I put the kids to bed.
Have a marvelous time. Is this your first time? You will have so much fun! Last year, in St. Louis, my friend and I were able to sit close to the boards for every event except for the men's long program, and our friends at home actually saw us in the stands. One friend actually taped her TV when we appeared and then posted in on Facebook. So hilarious. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 04:10, 4 January 2018 (UTC)
This is my first in-person attendance, and yes I'm having a lot of fun! I've been going every day since Monday with friends. I had a great time watching the senior ladies short program - a minor disappointment with Mirai stepping out of her triple axel, but still extremely impressive and a blast to watch. I briefly waved to the camera towards the end!--Jasper Deng (talk) 07:08, 4 January 2018 (UTC)
Good for you. Yes, I was disappointed about Mirai too, but she's only less than a point behind Bradie. I'm rooting that Mirai gets to go to the Olympics, after her disappointment in '14, but I like Bradie, too. And Ashley Wagner, who breaks my heart over and over again. It's so great being around all that greatness. I went to Spokane in 2010, another Olympic year, and it was so exciting. Hopefully, I can go to Nationals next year. After you've seen it live, watching the TV broadcasts just isn't enough, especially since they don't show everything. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 18:00, 5 January 2018 (UTC)
I'm looking forward to what the ladies have in store for me tonight. One thing I've learned is that TV doesn't catch the skaters' interactions with the judges and audience. Adam and Jason made great use of that last night. I had never heard of Bradie before but she's impressive -- skating is full of surprises!--Jasper Deng (talk) 18:17, 5 January 2018 (UTC)

Thanks

This is only a few years belated, but thanks for making Sesame Street an FA. I just randomly saw it and the fact that it was an FA made me happy. GMGtalk 01:02, 28 February 2018 (UTC)

Ah, you're very welcome. Working on The Show's articles on WP has given me lots of joy, so I'm glad that others have experienced some of that same joy. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 05:15, 28 February 2018 (UTC)

GA Review Archiving

Hey Figureskatingfan! Look who's back! I hope everything has been awesome for the past two and a bit years.

I just ran into a situation where a user edited a 5 year old review page. I'm wondering if it would be worth talking to the GA community about "mandating" that the page be archived. For example, like this. It would be a bit of a pain to find an editor willing to update a bot to do this work so I'm wondering if it's possible to create a template that reviewers just need to add (they would just add a one-liner substituting the template) after the review is complete.

Since I've been gone for a long time I was thinking maybe you know some of the more current active editors that may be able to join a discussion.--Dom497 (talk) 01:24, 1 March 2018 (UTC)

Yah, I saw that you were back. My life's been in a bit of an upheaval the past year or so, but I also returned after a kind of hiatus of extreme busyness with work and RL. I'm currently unemployed, so I have more time for WP, too. I'm still getting myself back in the loop, like starting another GA Cup, which I'd like to do starting in March. Interested in helping out?
Re: the above situation: Personally, I'd just let it go. There must be some motivation for the editor to review a 5-year old GA. After looking at the article's talk page, I see that it's part of the GAR community reassessment. GAs and FAs should be reassessed from time to time, as you know, to maintain WP's high quality. Perhaps archiving old GAs can be a discussion held at GAR.
Anyway, welcome back. Hope all is well with you. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 05:57, 1 March 2018 (UTC)
The GAR isn't even valid in my opinion but I guess the user editing a the original nomination page is a one-off situation. Regarding the GA Cup, I'm unfortunately going to have to pass on the offer. I'm "Semi-Retired" and I only expect to be online every once in a while.--Dom497 (talk) 21:30, 3 March 2018 (UTC)
No problem, no harm in asking, right? I reserve the right to ask for your assistance, though. ;) Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 04:29, 4 March 2018 (UTC)

thanks for your correction of the Maya Angelou article this is a very important part of her life

We want to make sure that important information such as what was placed concerning Leon Youngblood Sr, his son notable music producer Roccstar and Maya's grandson are placed where they need to be in her Wiki can you please place it where it needs to be, I ask this with the utmost respect — Preceding unsigned comment added by Andrewigfall (talk • contribs) 19:22, 17 April 2018 (UTC)

@Andrewigfall: Andrew, I understand where you're coming from. I've seen some of the videos to "Caged Bird Songs", and it's great. However, the places you've been attempting to put the content about it unfortunately aren't appropriate. For example, they don't belong in I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings because that article is about Dr. Angelou's first autobiography and the album are her poems put to music and dance. You've also tried to put it in the intro to her bio article, Maya Angelou, and that's not right, either. You also didn't include reliable sources, which is a requirement for high quality articles in Wikipedia; see WP:RS.
Instead, the better place is Poetry of Maya Angelou, a featured article that I largely wrote. Actually, that article is incomplete because it needs content about Dr. Angelou's influence on rap music. There are lots of reliable sources out there about it, including the articles written about "Caged Bird Songs." This is something I've wanted to do for some time now, but since I'm a lay person with a busy life, I haven't had the time. You see, I've been the main editor for most (if not all) of the Wikipedia articles about Dr. Angelou and her works. Most of these articles are either featured articles or good articles, and many of her articles make up a featured topic. And that took me about 7 years to accomplish. I'm proud that by the time of her death in 2014, the world was able to turn to high quality, well-written, and well-sourced articles about her and her works. It took more work than you can imagine, but I've learned a great deal, and it's made me into an Angelou expert of sorts. The week she died, her bio and the Caged Bird articles received over 6 million page views.
That being said, I remain committed to the on-going quality of these articles. I promise that in the next 2 weeks, I'll do the necessary research and add content about "Caged Bird Songs" to the appropriate articles. We may even get a stand-alone article about it. Please be patient with me. I'm gratified that there are others interested in accurate information getting out there about Dr. Angelou. As you can imagine, I admire her greatly; she's made a huge impact on my life. One of my biggest regrets is that I never got to meet her. DYK for Alysa Liu

On 24 July 2018, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Alysa Liu, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that despite earning the second-highest score in the 2018 U.S. Championships at junior level, Alysa Liu was too young to compete at the World Junior Figure Skating Championships? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Alysa Liu. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Alysa Liu), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

@Yoninah: Thanks, Yoninah. Argh, still having trouble with the little stuff, so I depend upon younger and smarter folks to help me. Please let me know if I did it right this time; if not, you have my permission to put the click in the right place so that the DYK can get on the main page on Madonna's birthday. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 01:36, 12 August 2018 (UTC)
Thanks. See how I did it there. Yoninah (talk) 12:14, 12 August 2018 (UTC)

Your sandbox...

Hi Christine, I noticed your sandbox2 is currently empty. Is it OK if I drop something in there to show you an idea I've had? I was doing a copyedit of the Background section in Original dance and thought it might be good to break it up into smaller sections to give the article more structure, and it might also make it easier to expand on the individual areas if necessary in future. Rodney Baggins (talk) 15:14, 14 August 2018 (UTC)

@Rodney Baggins: Yah, that's fine, go ahead. I have a few sandboxes, some of which I should probably delete. I don't mind sharing. ;) Looking forward to seeing what you've got. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 18:13, 14 August 2018 (UTC)
Great, thanks v. much for that... I've just copied the existing Background section of the OD article into your sandbox and I shall attempt to put my changes in next for you to look at. Watch this (that) space! Rodney Baggins (talk) 18:47, 14 August 2018 (UTC)
So I've put my suggested new version in. It might look a bit radical at first, but you'll see it has all the same information in it as before, just in a different order and some of it reworded. I corrected the time limit to 2 mins and I've removed some overlinking – OD/CD/SD/FD/ISU are already wikilinked in the lead section. You've also repeated the definitions of the segment abbreviations – original dance (OD), etc. – but as that might actually be helpful to the reader I've left it alone. Let me know what you think. I won't be offended if you hate it. Rodney Baggins (talk) 19:18, 14 August 2018 (UTC)
No, I think it's good. If you like, go ahead and replace it with what's already there, and then I'll fix the refs. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 21:09, 14 August 2018 (UTC)
OK will do. Rodney Baggins (talk) 21:35, 14 August 2018 (UTC)
Done. One other thing I've just noticed is that the category is still called "Category:Ice dancing" and even though it was speedily renamed "Category:Ice dance" on July 20th, it was just as speedily put back again. Do you know anything about that? It should surely be called "Category:Ice dance". Rodney Baggins (talk) 21:53, 14 August 2018 (UTC)
Thanks. I just checked it out; it looks like a bot made the change, and the same bot made it back again. I just requested a category name change at WP:CFDS. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 23:01, 15 August 2018 (UTC)

You replied within hours to my only Wikipedia comment which I posted on 06/02/14. That was probably the day I created my account. I read that message only today, 08/17/18 (guessing this is the second time I’ve logged in).

I want to thank you for your kindness to an obvious newbie. I mentioned that Maya Angelou had spoken at my graduation from business school and you took the time to say that it must have been amazing. It was.

I’ve been looking through your user page and I think you’re pretty amazing yourself.

Welcome to the 2019 WikiCup!

Hello and Happy New Year!

Welcome to the 2019 WikiCup, the competition begins today. If you have already joined, your submission page can be found here. If you have not yet signed up, you can add your name here and we will set up your submissions page. One important rule to remember is that only content on which you have completed significant work during 2019, and which you have nominated this year, is eligible for points in the competition, the judges will be checking! Any questions should be directed to one of the judges, or left on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup. Signups will close at the end of January, and the first round will end on 26 February; the 64 highest scorers at that time will make it to round 2. Good luck! The judges for the WikiCup are Sturmvogel 66 (talk · contribs · email), Godot13 (talk · contribs · email), Vanamonde93 (talk · contribs · email) and Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs · email). Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for the calculation of the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. See User:RonBot for info on how to not get these messages. Comment on Kim Clijsters FAC?

Hi Figureskatingfan, I am planning on nominating Kim Clijsters as an FAC once it passes its GA review (hopefully in the next day or so). Maya Angelou

Given the length of time she taught at Wake Forest University, how do you NOT include the naming of a residence hall for her in her main article?

I sent myself a note two years ago to do this and just now found it. I need to do a better job with my to-do list.— Vchimpanzee • talk • contributions • 18:32, 18 March 2019 (UTC)

@Vchimpanzee: Because her main bio article isn't the place to deposit the great amount of awards Angelou's received. You were correct in taking it to the list; I should've realized that myself, but I was thinking about other stuff at the time.
I find that if I don't take care of stuff when I think about it, it simply doesn't get done. That could be age, but as my family keeps pointing out, I was that way in my 20s. I dunno about you, but my WP to-do list is WAAAY long. I'm glad you got to it, though, 'cause we can always use more Angelou experts around here. I loved how she got herself in the news this week, with the name controversy. The whole world just needs to listen to her, even after her death. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 03:31, 19 March 2019 (UTC)
I'm no expert on Maya Angelou. At the time of the article, I had serious Internet problems at home so I copied and pasted everything I needed to read when I had the chance. Ironically, I had a way to read really long emails to myself when the Internet was out. Actually, I could have read but had no access to Wikipedia, so maybe that's what happened. Seeing that I hadn't added this information to the article, I concluded I hadn't read any of this stuff even after two years, and I made the addition in what looked like the logical place.— Vchimpanzee • talk • contributions • 15:31, 19 March 2019 (UTC)

@NiciVampireHeart: Thanks for the revert, and the tip. Yes, I've been around here forever but there are still things I'm clue-less (har-har, did you see what I just did there?) about. ;) Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 04:33, 30 May 2019 (UTC)
Hey, no problem. You weren't the first to do it, and trust me, you won't be the last. That's a terrible joke and you should be ashamed of yourself :P NiciVampireHeart 15:31, 31 May 2019 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!

I met Maya Angelou in the spring of 2010, I will never forget her, it was as if I was talking to a living goddess she was larger than life, Christine Maya would have loved you...and her family who I also have met would have invited you over for dinner based on your love for her.(Andrewigfall (talk) 19:51, 14 July 2019 (UTC))

You've just such a great job trying to help out a relatively new user, especially considering the user is one who doesn't have the best attitude and has not treated you with respect. You have a high level of patience that I can only hope to be able to emulate! Aoi (青い) (talk) 20:29, 10 July 2019 (UTC)

Ah thanks, User:Aoi, that's so nice. Patience, what's that? ;) Yah, it's been a little frustrating. I'm not sure things will end well, and I wish it was going to be over soon. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 22:25, 10 July 2019 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!

The Original Barnstar
I truly appreciate your hard work, seven years it had me emotional because of what you have been dedicated and committed to, my wish is that you would keep your word and write a stand-alone article which is well deserving about Maya's I know why the caged bird sings and how Leon Derrick Youngblood SR, and his son , in fact they are the first father and son to go number one on billboard after collaborating on a song with Chris Brown's album Indigo..see Wikipedia under Indigo and song # 18 , since I know everything needs to be sourced...albeit Roccstar who is now one of the biggest music producers in the country and his father put together her incredible poems to music, the fact that people don't know this exists is mindboggling, I waited months to see if you would create the article and add the appropriate information as it is a travesty for this generation to have no clue that her poems have been put to rap and hip hop music, her influence on rap is huge,,, can you please I ask out of pure respect for Maya and her family and fans do the article Andrewigfall (talk) 19:41, 14 July 2019 (UTC)

Erroneous revert

You (hopefully) didn't do what you intended to do in this edit. All you did was revert my typo fix, thus restoring the incorrectly spelled word. MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 16:06, 20 August 2019 (UTC)

Yah oops sorry, I reverted and was going to fix it but time got away from me today. I'll go fix it now. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 22:11, 20 August 2019 (UTC)

WikiCup 2019 September newsletter

The fourth round of the competition has finished in a flurry of last minute activity, with 454 points being required to qualify for the final round. It was a hotly competitive round with two contestants with over 400 points being eliminated, and all but two of the finalists having achieved an FA during the round. Casliber, our 2016 winner, was the highest point-scorer, followed by Enwebb and Lee Vilenski, who are both new to the competition. In fourth place was SounderBruce, a finalist last year. But all those points are swept away as we start afresh for the final round.

Round 4 saw the achievement of 11 featured articles. In addition, Adam Cuerden scored with 18 FPs, Lee Vilenski led the GA score with 8 GAs while Kosack performed 15 GA reviews. There were around 40 DYKs, 40 GARs and 31 GAs overall during round 4. Even though contestants performed more GARs than they achieved GAs, there was still some frustration at the length of time taken to get articles reviewed.

As we start round 5, we say goodbye to the eight competitors who didn't quite make it; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia, and we hope you will join us again next year. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them (some people have fallen foul of this rule and the points have been removed).

If you are concerned that your nomination, whether it be for a good article, a featured process, or anything else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. WikiCup 2019 November newsletter

The WikiCup is over for another year! Our Champion this year is Better far to live and die / Under the brave black flag I fly Adam Cuerden (submissions), who over the course of the competition has amassed 91 featured pictures, including 32 in the final round. Our finalists this year were:

  1. Better far to live and die / Under the brave black flag I fly Adam Cuerden (submissions) with 964 points
  2. England Lee Vilenski (submissions) with 899 points
  3. Norfolk Island Casliber (submissions) with 817 points
  4. Wales Kosack (submissions) with 691 points
  5. Washington (state) SounderBruce (submissions) with 388 points
  6. Antarctica Enwebb (submissions) with 146 points
  7. United States Usernameunique (submissions) with 145 points
  8. Indonesia HaEr48 (submissions) with 74 points

All those who reached the final will win awards. The following special awards will be made based on high performance in particular areas of content creation. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, these prizes are awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round, or in the event of a tie, to the overall leader in this field. Awards will be handed out in the coming weeks. Please be patient!

Congratulations to everyone who participated in this year's WikiCup, whether you made it to the final rounds or not, and particular congratulations to the newcomers to the WikiCup who have achieved much this year. Thanks to all who have taken part and helped out with the competition, not forgetting User:Jarry1250, who runs the scoring bot.

We have opened a scoring discussion on whether the rules and scoring need adjustment. Please have your say. Next year's competition will begin on 1 January. You are invited to sign up to participate; the WikiCup is open to all Wikipedians, both novices and experienced editors, and we hope to see you all in the 2020 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners, and thank all participants for their involvement! DYK?

May I have your blessing to nominate Fred Rogers for DYK? Did you mean to nominate it yourself? --- Coffeeandcrumbs 21:50, 13 November 2019 (UTC)

User talk:Coffeeandcrumbs Yes of course, you do. I was going to nominate it myself, but I'd be honored if you did it yourself. Would you mind, though, asking that it be put on the main page on Nov. 22? That's when the Tom Hanks is coming out. Thanks! Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 03:27, 14 November 2019 (UTC)
Nominated at Template:Did you know nominations/Fred Rogers. I will do the required work but feel free to suggest a different hook. --- Coffeeandcrumbs 06:17, 14 November 2019 (UTC)

DYK for Fred Rogers

On 22 November 2019, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Fred Rogers, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Fred Rogers's 1969 testimony (video shown) resurfaced in 2012 and 2017 to counter calls for defunding PBS and similar non-profit arts-related organizations? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Fred Rogers. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Fred Rogers), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.
