Help us improve wikimeets by filling in the UK Wikimeet survey!

Hello! I'm running a survey to identify the best way to notify Wikimedians about upcoming UK wikimeets (informal, in-person social meetings of Wikimedians), and to see if we can improve UK wikimeets to make them accessible and attractive to more editors and readers. All questions are optional, and it will take about 10 minutes to complete. Please fill it in at:

History of Medicine editathon

Hello again, Eoinho!
Apologies for taking so long to get back to you after last week but am just recovering from the flu. Thank you so much for taking part in the History of Medicine editathon. Just so you know, we uploaded in excess of 500 images to Wiki Commons (including a few from your good self), created 4 brand new articles on Wikipedia, and improved a further 56! For the event page, click here or to see the whole illustrated story of the event then you can click here: Storify: ILW editathon 2016
I hope that you enjoyed the day, and that we'll see you on Wiki again soon.

Now that you've learned - or refreshed - the basics of editing using Wikipedia’s Visual Editor, I hope that you'll stay logged in and edit or create more articles. I've added some booklets and some links below that you may find useful.

If you're not feeling bold enough to write an (other) article straight away, why not try a small edit first, or adding a link? Don't worry about being perfect, Wiki is a constantly evolving entity. Fortunately there's a whole team of editors just like you who can help.

Welcome! Now have some cake...

You can't break Wikipedia, but in case you're still nervous here are some pages that you might find helpful, especially the first one which covers the main things to remember about using Visual Editor.

The next up-and-coming Wikipedia event is this one run by Sara Thomas, Wikimedian in Residence at Museums and Galleries Scotland. Details here: Modern Scottish Women 2 - Art & Feminism

The University of Edinburgh are also looking into running an editathon for International Women’s Day on (or near) 8th March 2016 – details are still to be confirmed but will be updated on my project page here: Wikipedia:University_of_Edinburgh
I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Remember, if you are writing on a talk page, please sign your name using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your name and the date.

If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or place {{helpme}} on your talk page and ask your question there. Keep in touch and hopefully see you soon! Stinglehammer (talk) 01:17, 24 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Userpage

Likewise, I dunno if I'm really noteworthy enough for folks to visit. However I really have a thing about userboxes. Possibly to a degree that's unhealthy and obsessive, but that's another matter.Catsmeat (talk) 22:04, 25 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

This is a bit weird Catsmeat - having a discussion across talk pages. I have never gotten into userboxes; your's were very informative. Raspberry Pi, linux and an aviation theme being of common interest.

A page you started (Jeffery Collins) has been reviewed!

Thanks for creating Jeffery Collins, Eoinho!

Wikipedia editor Blythwood just reviewed your page, and wrote this note for you:

I've added some more categories and explained what positions he held - having held notable positions like a professorship is worth noting to demonstrate notability by Wikipedia standards. Hope that's OK.

To reply, leave a comment on Blythwood's talk page.

Speedy deletion nomination of George Robin Henderson (mathematician)

Hello Eoinho,

I wanted to let you know that I just tagged George Robin Henderson (mathematician) for deletion, because the article doesn't clearly say why the subject is important enough to be included in an encyclopedia.

If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to work on it, you can , but please don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.

You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions. TushiTalk To Me 15:06, 1 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

(mathematician)

You shouldn't call an article George Robin Henderson (mathematician) unless there is at least one other Wikipedia article on someone named George Robin Henderson, or at least red links to such an article, and you need to distinguish this one from the others who share that name. I've changed the title to George Robin Henderson. Michael Hardy (talk) 18:15, 7 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Ways to improve Sigrid Augusta Green

Hi, I'm Teblick. Eoinho, thanks for creating Sigrid Augusta Green!

I've just tagged the page, using our page curation tools, as having some issues to fix. More references would help, but you also need to include more from your existing sources. What are the dates of her birth and death? Those should be basic for a biographical article. Also, tell about the recognition that she achieved (as indicated in the article from the Daily Mail).

The tags can be removed by you or another editor once the issues they mention are addressed. If you have questions, you can leave a comment on my talk page. Or, for more editing help, talk to the volunteers at the Teahouse.

Hidden Gems - thanks for coming!

Heya! Thanks so much for contributing to Hidden Gems - great to see that new article. Hope all's well with you? Lirazelf (talk) 11:01, 12 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Lirazelf, a small contribution on my part. I found a great CC image on flickr but it took Ewan at the Ada Lovelace Day to point out it was non-commercial and so the flickr2commons tool refused to import it. Things are going well with me, a little tired from many days of back to back goings on. When is your next event?

Question about your edit in Kim Philby

Hi Eoinho, In your edit HERE can you please tell me if your citation is correct and not vandalized? (I couldn't find the reference and I think the current source isn't related to the subject) Averroes82 (talk) 06:57, 5 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Averroes82 (talk), Indeed I can not see any reference to the Bedouin in the Paris Review cited. I have either given the wrong citation or the article has been updated. Thinking back, there was but one unsubstantiated mention of this time in his life. A quick google reveals https://www.theguardian.com/theobserver/2016/dec/04/kim-philby-observer-spy-robert-mccrum mentions the Bedouin. Maybe there are further references within that article which unfortunately I do not have the time to follow up. Eoinho (talk) 11:57, 5 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

ArbCom 2018 election voter message

Hello, Eoinho. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 3 December. All users who registered an account before Sunday, 28 October 2018, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Thursday, 1 November 2018 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2018 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:42, 19 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Notice

The article David Houston (zoologist) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

A search for references failed to find significant coverage in reliable sources to comply with notability requirements. This included web searches for news coverage, books, and journals, which can be seen from the following links:
David Houston (zoologist)news, books, scholar
Consequently, this article is about a subject that appears to lack sufficient notability. Please see the plain-language summary of our notability guidelines.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.
