G'day

G'day esteemed person who has expressed interest in Sydney based meetups at this page (I hope that's the correct wording for the formal greeting!!). You may have heard that Australia is to have its very own 'chapter' of the Wikimedia Foundation - and further, there's a meeting coming up to discuss / enact the chapter's incorporation (details here). I'm afraid that I don't know too much about the details of what this entails, other than having a private hope that we might get a secret handshake, and maybe cheap coffee at wikimania (this is a poor attempt at humour - I'm sure that the Chapter's do great work, and it's a good thing that Australia is to have one).

If you're interested in meeting up this weekend (the set date is the 20th) - or later, then please do head over here and sign up, or make a comment at the talk page... the drive to create the chapter has largely come from another town in Australia that I'm afraid I haven't actually heard much about.. and anything they can do.... right? - cheers, Privatemusings (talk) 11:11, 14 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

editing help

Hi there Enoch!

A university class I've been trying to convince to get involved in using WP in their class has today agreed to do so. In the class they rewrote the text of Religious Nationalism. I was wondering if you could have a look at it and edit it mercilessly (as the saying goes). Perhaps if you could convince others to get in on the act too that would be great.

Here is the diff of the edit they made [1].

Thanks for your help,

Witty Lama 10:36, 23 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Please note that the section Religious Nationalism has now been separated from the main article Nationalism into its own article Religious nationalism. Please join in and help bring this newly formed article up to standard. Especially important is avoiding a Systemic Bias and adding Citations.

All the best, Witty Lama 04:57, 25 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I promise to take a look when I get some time. enochlau (talk) 22:03, 25 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Drinks and a wiki chat?

G'day sydneysider - fancy a 'not quite a meetup but a few drinks' sort of thing? - We can chat about the new aussie chapter, the price of eggs and have our very own 2020 Wiki Summit! - or just sink a couple of cold ones and gass bag about the good 'ol days of wiki, when an editor could get some repsect (not a typo)! I've suggested something here so take a look and sign up if you're up for it... cheers, Privatemusings (talk) 02:28, 24 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Deleting images on Commons but not replacing them

I noticed that you deleted an image that apparently is also on Commons but did not change the link in the article that uses the image. Is this a common occurrence? Do administrators typically delete images from Wikipedia because there is a copy on Commons without replacing the actual links in the articles? --ElKevbo (talk) 15:12, 25 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I deleted that a year ago. I don't remember this image in particular, but based on the deletion reason I entered, I suspect that at the time that I deleted it, there was an exact replica of that image on Commons with the same name - in which case, yes, admins on the English Wikipedia will delete the local version, because the image link will still work (if a local image is not found, it will look on the Commons for a file of the same name). However, this image was deleted on the Commons recently [2], because it was not tagged correctly. It appears that this image was a PD-old image, so I'm happy to restore the local version on the English Wikipedia if you like - not sure why it wasn't tagged correctly on the Commons (I'm not an admin there, can't see deleted edit history). enochlau (talk) 22:01, 25 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Holy crap did that timestamp say 2007 and not 2008? Wow - color me embarrassed! If I had noticed then I certainly wouldn't have bothered you about it as it is quite ridiculous to expect anyone to remember a specific incident from back that far.
If you could please restore the local copy of the image that would be spiffy. Thanks! --ElKevbo (talk) 22:25, 25 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Done. But now it needs sources otherwise it'll be deleted locally as well. enochlau (talk) 03:26, 28 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Done. Thanks again! --ElKevbo (talk) 05:38, 28 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Dashes in the Signpost

Greetings, Enochlau. You have probably not noticed, but I have been regularly making minor edits to articles of the Wikipedia Signpost for at least a month; in your case, I have mostly spend these on converting the hyphens between the external links and their descriptions to en dashes. The latter are much more suitable for this usage, and constitute an aesthetic improvement over hyphens—the style guidelines seem to agree with this view. Although I do not really mind continuing making these minor adjustments (and increasing my edit count in the process), it has finally dawned on me that it would be best to simply go to the source and see what the author thinks. At least I get to know if you agree with my changes (in which case I trust that you will take them up yourself) or disagree (in which case I should leave the hyphens be). In any event, that will be one thing less to worry about. Waltham, The Duke of 03:27, 24 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Umm ok. enochlau (talk) 04:30, 28 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmm... Perhaps it's more than co-incidence that you write the smallest section of the Signpost. :-D Waltham, The Duke of 05:04, 28 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
What is that meant to mean? enochlau (talk) 05:44, 28 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
A jocular reference to your two-word reply... I should have made that clearer, I suppose. Waltham, The Duke of 06:09, 28 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
lol ok :) enochlau (talk) 08:07, 28 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Well, perhaps Waltham politely backed off when challenged; frankly, I don't think you should be writing high-profile texts without having someone else copy-edit them first. Sorry to be blunt, but "in good faith" doesn't mean "don't criticise". TONY (talk) 09:03, 31 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Your deletion of Mack McLarty

Was this deletion a mistake? I noticed you deleted the page as G8, but it was not a talk page so that obviously wouldn't apply. The person is definitely notable as a past White House Chief of Staff, and surely deserves a page. I'll be restoring the page as a presumably mistaken deletion if I don't hear from you within 24 hours. Thanks, VegaDark (talk) 05:37, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oops, not sure how that happened -- obviously, I deleted the wrong page. Sorry. enochlau (talk) 15:02, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Your bad English—deal with it or don't write high-profile pieces

Look, don't write those right-ups if your English is so bad, or if you can't be bothered properly reviewing them before hitting the button. Sorry to be blunt, but it was very sloppy—embarrassingly so—and remains embarrassing since your friend Taxman (never the best writer despite his self-perception as such) has blundered in and reverted my inline queries without dealing with them. I'm not going to baby-sit what you write: I've pointed out the problems, and you're quite satisfied in leaving the crap in there for all to read. It's such a bad advertisement, for you and for the project. TONY (talk) 02:55, 31 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I can see how the first sentence is clumsy, and "overseas" is unforgivable, but I stand by the rest. enochlau (talk) 04:55, 31 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No, the rest was wanting. "... whether "it's fit for purpose, the context, the relevance, whether there's an alternative view"" was pretty bad, and discredits that organisation through its illiterate use of the language. The past tense, as I said, was wrong—it indicated that WP no longer reflects notions of the global village. You had quoted it partially in a way that rendered it false. See now. TONY (talk) 09:00, 31 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Criticisms are fine. You just need to learn how to do it in a more constructive and civil manner. enochlau (talk) 09:58, 31 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Your deletion of Developer 2.0

Was this deletion a mistake? I was writing this page to outline which is the principle of Developer 2.0 in an Enterprise Context. I don't really mind why it is blatant: advertising when: I'm writing about principles... without making reference to business. Is it maybe to the references lists. Well that's my blog too, and if you think it is advertising, ok (just remove it). To me, it's only a set of dump idea I wrote around the web and if you're thinking it's offending I would remove it. Can you resume that page without references? Developer 2.0 is an emerging idea, and what I've written is valuable (at least for me). —Preceding unsigned comment added by Fmondora (talk • contribs) 04:44, 5 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm worried how about your deletion is democratic, and how the way you do things is collaborative making spirit of writing on wikipedia when: - I wrote an article about principles there; - You deleted it without informing me - I've asked you different days ago - You've never replied

Is it democratic? Is it the base principle of Wikipedia!

I don't think so, and I believe something wrong has happened because it's unbelievable watching how you're using your power of judging only because you're a moderator.

I'm sure it's the last time I'm writing on wikipedia... —Preceding unsigned comment added by Fmondora (talk • contribs) 05:19, 7 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry for the delay in replying - I have been busy in real life. The article as deleted read like a promotion, looking at the tone and the lack of emphasis on what it is as opposed to why it is great. The three links to your blog didn't help either. If you believe that this is a legitimate concept that deserves a place on Wikipedia, I encourage you to rewrite it, focusing on especially on these issues: verification (WP:VERIFY), especially with finding references that come from a variety of reputable sources, and tone (WP:TONE, WP:Spam#How_not_to_be_a_spammer). For the record, two other users expressed their concerns with the article before I deleted the article. enochlau (talk) 06:49, 8 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I don't like how the conversation is going and your judgment until people can read only your judgement and not my tones... It is still not democratic! Maybe it is a good strategy for driving people to different business target. By the way, I want my content back because its mine. I think it was a better policy to help authors growing in writing their ideas instead of deleting. I'm really afraid to see how a public service like wikipedia is not so public and how the only thing will remain public is your judgment without any evidence. Can you send back me by email my deleted content?
Sorry to break the news to you, but Wikipedia is not a democracy. Regardless, given the borderline nature of this case, I have restored the content of Developer 2.0, and added tags that represent what I believe to be problems with the article as it stands. Please try and rectify the problems to the best of your ability, and please request assistance from other users familiar with enterprise software principles to help you understand how to write your article. If the article still reads like an advertisement in a few days' time, the article may be considered for deletion again (by me or others). enochlau (talk) 16:13, 8 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I really appreciate the way you tagged, and in these days I'll work more on it. I'll come back next to you to feel your impression s. Thanks for all! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Fmondora (talk • contribs) 05:47, 11 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion of Baunt

This shows you deleted the redirect to the Bount page. First off, mispelling it with 'a' instead of 'o' is a plausible mistake. It is not an implausible typo or mosnomer. There is discussion on the talk page of the article here by Dekimasu as to the alternative spelling based on the German references of the clan. 'Baunto' is listed on the page and it is unclear as to whether adding the 'o' is a way to pluralize it for the entire clan, meaning Baunt could refer to a single individual. I do not see the harm in redirecting Baunt there, could it be restored? Tyciol (talk) 14:03, 15 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I use the plugin myself, so I know what it is. However, the issue then, as now, is that the article makes no reference to why it's notable enough for inclusion into Wikipedia. Is it popular? If so, how popular? enochlau (talk) 08:14, 18 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You could have had the decency to wait for an answer from me before proceeding with the speedy deletion. I, unlike you, can't imagine why you want to delete an article about a useful piece of software. Maybe an article about it could make it notable. BTW, you probably will want to delete also the article about Moji extension I also wrote (sarcasm).

My apologies: it wasn't you who added the template. urashimataro (talk) 11:12, 18 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I didn't delete it, nor tag it the second time. But as deleted, you still hadn't addressed the problem of notability. Notability of a subject is a precondition for an article; so "Maybe an article about it could make it notable" doesn't make sense. enochlau (talk) 18:24, 20 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The Lowlifes Page

Hi. I had just finished off the page for the band The Lowlifes and in a flash it was deleted. I don't understand the reason for this saying that the band is unimportant and stuff. Everything in the brief article was factual and I was doing it for a good friend of mine who is the founder member of the band. When I deleted it, it merely contained a message saying that it's being written - such a message is able to be deleted. Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Country Club Resort, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Country Club Resort is blatant advertising for a company, product, group, service or person that would require a substantial rewrite in order to become an encyclopedia article.

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Dotfuscator.png)

Thanks for uploading Image:Dotfuscator.png. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Use of your photo

Hi Enoch,

I used one of your images as an album cover for a performance by five guitarists who use electronics in various combinations. The performance was staged on August 2, 2008 at The Nave Gallery, so being clever, they called themselves "Five Knaves at The Nave." Your image was not so much altered as simply "framed." with some text. You can find the cover art and performance at: http://www.jamendo.com/en/album/32210 . About your photo of an orrery

Hi Enoch,

I'm a science teacher in secondery school (12 to 17 years old) in Montreal, Canada .I am about doing a project on the orrery. I was wandering if you could tell me where I can find one of those. If I can't get one from here (Montreal), could you send me one (of course I would give you the money necessary to send it)?

Here's my e-mail : profguillaume@gmail.com

Thanks!

A Sydney Meetup

G'day all - I'm dropping this note in to let you know that there's to be a Wiki Meetup the week after next, on Tuesday, 21st at 18:00 at The Paragon in Circular Quay. If you've ever thought about popping along to one of these, but haven't had the chance - now's the time! If you love the idea, but the time and / or place don't quite work for you, please do feel free to wiki edit away at the meetup page and I'm sure we can sort something out :-) Meetups are a great way to share wiki-thoughts, meet wiki-friends, and generally learn how to prefix all areas of your life with wiki- :-)

It's a very friendly bunch, and we're hoping to be able to formally collect membership fees and details for the Australian Chapter (did you know that we're the only current english speaking chapter? Join now for kudos and future bragging rights!) - as well as just generally have a good 'ol time. I look forward to seeing you there :-) best, Privatemusings (talk) 07:48, 10 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi all, it's Meetup time again :-) - Hopefully you'll be up for meeting on April 22nd at about 6pm at The Paragon, a pub in Circular Quay. It'll be the usual round of drinks and chit chats, with no particular agenda, just some friendly faces, and a shared interest in Wiki stuff. If you've thought about coming along before, but haven't made it - we'd love to see you - it'll be a relaxed, social chin wag about all things wiki - bring anyone along you fancy, and I hope you can make it :-)

Celebrations for 2nd Anniversary of Wikimedia Hong Kong

Sydney Meetup

I think you may have been notified by email, but I thought it was worth my dropping in a note anywhoo, to let you know that Sydney Wikipedians are having a meetup this coming Tuesday, the 4th August. As you'll see on that page, we have two folk flying in from the Wikimedia Foundation who will be attending, and we have a great crowd of wiki types signed up to come along.

If you've never been to a meetup before, this wouldn't be a bad one to kick off with (we're all very friendly, interesting, and great looking folk ;-), and if you have, well come along again, why don't ya! If you've any questions you can flick the aussie mailing list an email on wikimediaau-l@lists.wikimedia.org aussie mailing list, or drop me a note on my talk page. Hope to see some of you there!

ps. If you've already signed up, and received an email, and a phone call, and a door knock, and are getting a bit frustrated with constant advances from enthusiastic australian wiki types, then I'm told you can print this message, and bring it along to use as a 'free beer' voucher, redeemable by our esteemed Vice-President of WMAU on the night...... ;-) Privatemusings (talk) 22:05, 31 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

CDSCC "telescope"

Hi Enochlau,

I just thought I would send you a note about a referance to an Antenna (DSS-43 in this case) as a telescope.

All the Deep Space Stations (DSS) are parabolic antenna's, and as they are capable of performing radio astronomy, their primary role is communication (transmit/recieve). I thought I would let you know and let you change the note. It would just make the page more accurate.

Hi all,

It's meetup time again in Sydney - hopefully you'll be able to come along for friendly chat and drinks about all things wiki - topics will no doubt include the Chapter - perhaps with planning for the upcoming AGM, the general state of wiki-play, and the traditional candle lighting to encourage the mythical flagged-revisions extension to make its way on to the wiki. At this point, I usually mention that sitting wiki arbitrators are compelled to buy everyone a drink, but one of our number has taken a rather extreme route in avoiding this duty - if you have no idea what I'm talking about then you're probably busy writing and maintaining articles - but come along anyways on the 21st October, from 18.30 til late, to find out :-) cheers, Privatemusings (talk) 21:31, 1 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Article WiZiQ deleted: Bringing it back

Hi Enochlau,

Just a quick FYI article WiZiQ was deleted:

08:37, 17 September 2007 Enochlau (talk | contribs) deleted "WiZiQ" ‎ (nn web)

I created a new article called Wiziq discussing the website (which I believe meets notability requirements)

However, the actual name of the website is more accurately WiZiQ with the W, Z, and Q capitals and the i's lowercase, so I'm going to have Wiziq redirect to WiZiQ which will be restarted.

Suspension of admin privileges due to inactivity

Following a community discussion in June 2011, consensus was reached to provisionally suspend the administrative privileges of users who have been inactive for one year, meaning administrators who have made neither any edits nor any logged actions in over one year. As a result of this discussion, your administrative privileges have been removed pending your return. If you wish to have these privileges reinstated, please post to the Wikipedia:Bureaucrats' noticeboard and the userright will be restored per the re-sysopping process (i.e., as long as the attending bureaucrats are reasonably satisfied that your account has not been compromised and that your inactivity did not have the effect of evading scrutiny of any actions which might have led to sanctions). This removal of access is procedural only, and not intended to reflect negatively upon you in any way. We wish you the best in future endeavors, and thank you for your past administrative efforts. re-submission of wiki page for "Noughts and Exes"

Hey there. i'm new to wiki and am trying to start a wikipedia entry for a band i headline "Noughts and Exes". Someone apparently tried to make a wikipedia page for the band before but it was contested citing "doesn't indicate importance/significance)" as the reason for it's deletion.

I'm here to ask that we might set up the page again as we're very much an active working band. We've been given acclaim in the following publications : Time Magazine http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,2043327,00.html Timeout Magazine (HK, Shanghai & Beijing) http://www.timeout.com.hk/music/features/39005/chinas-best-albums-of-2010.html South China Morning Post, HK Magazine and many others.

we've recently signed to Spectra Records : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spectra_Records

and our recent music video was featured at the LAPAFF, Relevant Magazine and various other online magazines and sites.

We've also played at various international music festivals including Midi Festival in China, Baybeats in Singapre and Envol et Macadame in Quebec. We have released two albums which have received airplay on several TV programs such as MTV cribs, The Real World, Keeping with the Kardashians and a Microsoft commercial and Shangri-La Hotel Video.

We have also just concluded a number of tours around Asia and Canada.

There is more to add but i don't want to bore you with all the details.

Would really love it if we could have our wiki page reactivated please. thanks so much mate

Please keep an eye on the Takis Fotopoulos article

I have noticed disruptive editing by user:John sargis, who keeps trying to remove referenced additions made to the article simply because they do not flatter Fotopoulos. The additions, mind you, were taken from Inclusive Democracy's own website (I'm talking about the Greek branch) and show that Fotopoulos and his followers have embarked on a smear campaign against Indymedia, Democracy Now!, Fairness and Accuracy In Reporting, even against Free Software. I have also noticed that they have trolled on various Greek blogs and they have gone so far as to claim that Amy Goodman is pro-zionist and that everyone who disagrees with them is a lackey of the Israeli Embassy. Quite disturbing, to say the least, and not at all befitting a philosopher who is considered somewhat of a sacred cow among Greek leftists. As for how democratic these actions are, draw your own conclusions. Elp gr (talk) 18:48, 12 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The article FinePrint has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Lack of notability established by the in-line citations referencing independent reliable sources with in-depth coverage with implication of notability.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. — Dmitrij D. Notice of change

Hello. You are receiving this message because of a recent change to the administrator policy that alters what you were told at the time of your desysopping. The effect of the change is that if you are inactive for a continuous three year period, you will be unable to request return of the administrative user right. This includes inactive time prior to your desysopping if you were desysopped for inactivity and inactive time prior to the change in policy. Inactivity is defined as the absence of edits or logged actions. Until such time as you have been inactive for three years, you may request return of the tools at the bureaucrats' noticeboard. Modern klystrons are amplifiers, not oscillators

A small nit regarding your 2004 picture of the klystron at the Canberra Deep Space Network station: all modern klystrons are amplifiers, not oscillators. The tube you photographed amplifies a relatively weak signal from a low power transmitter called an "exciter" to the high power levels that actually go to the transmitting antenna. The same klystron tubes are used in many UHF TV transmitters; I ran one back in the 1970s. They're also used in many particle accelerators (CERN, Fermilab, SLAC, etc) to produce the electrostatic fields that drive the particles.

In contrast an oscillator usually has no signal input. Karn (talk) 08:56, 15 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation

There is a backstage pass coming up to be followed by an editathon in the State Library of New South Wales on 23 November. This is the first time that an Australian cultural institution has opened its doors to us in this way and will be a special opportunity because the Library is providing: one of its best rooms; its expert curators (along with their expertise and their white gloves); a newly launched website (containing new resources); and of course, items from its collection (including rare and usually unavailable material) which we can look at, learn from, and use, to improve WP articles. For example, on the chosen topic (Australia and WWI), the Library holds many diaries and manuscripts from the period.

As you can see from the Library's project page, they have connected this editathon with their own work. They have already set out a wide range of resources to make things easier for us. Please sign up on the editathon project page if you can participate either online or in person with other Wikipedians. Hope to see you there! You previously closed a proposed move back to Dragon Boat Festival from an editor's bold "Duanwu Festival" move because "Proponents of neither side have gathered convincing, conclusive evidence to support their case." I am curious if you would consider revisiting that given your own searches, those provided by the other editors, and my current ones, which include sourcing that "Dragon Boat Festival" (all capped) is in fact the official translation used by the PRC in English documents and media publications and broadcasts.
