Francophone fortnight

Thanks for the thanks... I had a look around at likely topics and found Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/French speaking African authors, then when I went to the letter "R" I found that the first woman listed, with 2 red links was already in en.wiki! So I created two new redirects for her, from Ntyugwetondo Angèle Rawiri and Rawiri, Ntyugwetondo Angèle (supported by the source used in that list). So instead of a contribution to Francophone fortnight, perhaps I should list her in WP:WIR-301! I've got my eye on another couple of possibilities, French-writing women with "R" names. I'll just do one of them, to show willing. PamD 22:01, 11 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@PamD: I will resist the urge to thank you for thanking me for... (etc) :) that redlist is a great find, I'll add it to the event page. Thanks so much for your contributions and putting the work in! Chocmilk03 (talk) 23:09, 11 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Potiki

On 16 March 2024, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Potiki, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Patricia Grace did not intend for her novel Potiki, about the impact of land development on an indigenous community, to be seen as political? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Potiki. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Potiki), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Ben Schrader

Hi Chocmilk03, I just created this Wikidata item for Ben Schrader a housing historian and writer on Wellington as well as New Zealand history. I think he is notable for the purposes of Wikipedia as books he has written have won awards and his social historian work is significant and has also resulted in him being given awards including the JD Stout fellowship. Given your extensive experience of writing Wikipedia articles for New Zealand writers I just thought I'd put him on your radar as a potential candidate for a Wikipedia article. Ambrosia10 (talk) 23:32, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks @Ambrosia10, I've added him to my list. :) Hope all is well with you! Chocmilk03 (talk) 08:49, 16 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks @Chocmilk03, I really appreciate that. We've managed to get a photo of Ben onto Wikicommons as well. I'm doing great atm, although extremely busy! Lots and lots of projects but I'm enjoying myself. Hope you are well and happy too! Ambrosia10 (talk) 18:15, 16 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Ambrosia10: FYI, just published Ben Schrader. :) I would be surprised to hear you were anything less than extremely busy, haha, glad to hear all is well! Chocmilk03 (talk) 00:00, 18 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Fabulous! Thank you SO MUCH! Ambrosia10 (talk) 00:25, 18 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks

Hi Chocmilk03, not sure if this is the right way to do this but wanted to than kyou for helping with the page I did on Ray Thorburn. I'm still pretty new to all this and see what you mean about the quotes. Have cut them back as suggested. Thanks again for your help. Manymanydogs (talk) 00:50, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Manymanydogs: thank you for the kind message! You are most welcome, I remember learning about that policy when I was relatively new to Wikipedia too; there's a lot to learn but you're clearly picking things up quickly. Thanks also for your photo contributions, we are really lacking in photographs of New Zealand writers and artists! Look forward to seeing more of your work. :) Chocmilk03 (talk) 01:01, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

COI declaration

Have you had a look at the presentation that I gave yesterday? Either way, it's a good idea that you've also put this onto your user page. I read on the subject article's talk page: "He's sent me signed copies of his books." That was enough for triggering COI, as a picky editor could have seen that as a kind of payment. And no, I'm not suggesting that you need to disclose paid editing; what you've written down is plenty good enough. Schwede66 05:05, 27 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Schwede66, I did indeed and found it very helpful, thank you, especially the point about disclosing edits made at the request of someone with a COI in the edit summary. It seems obvious now, but I hadn't previously known this was required; occasionally article subjects or their contacts have reached out to me directly to request corrections or additions, and while I have sometimes referenced this in the edit summary (one recent example), I'm not sure I always have, especially when the edit seems uncontroversial.
Re: the signed copies of books, eek, it hadn't even occurred to me that they could be seen in that light. It's fortunate I was well-advised at the time about being upfront in making a declaration and going through the AfC process. :) Cheers, Chocmilk03 (talk) 08:10, 27 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Betty Guard

Hi Emma! Betty's surname caught my attention so I clicked the link and read her biography and learned about a remarkable life. Thank you so much for creating improving this article. When I got to the last section, regarding the book, I thought: This should be its own article with its own set of wikilinks and categories, so that there are additional ways readers might reach it and ultiatemly Betty. My first impulse was to make the split myself -a common enough practice of mine- but I didn't want to step on your toes (maybe you don't want the split; maybe you'd want to make the split yourself). In any case, thanks for what you do around here, AND, wishing you all the best! -- Rosiestep (talk) 15:32, 19 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Rosiestep (talk) 15:36, 19 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Rosiestep, thank you so much for the feedback and the kind words! I had just read Kidman's (excellent) novel and felt she deserved a much more complete Wikipedia entry. I thought it was especially cool how some of the details in the novel like the tortoiseshell comb that saved her life were in fact historically accurate.
The novel certainly deserves its own article also, and I'd be very happy if you were to make the split; it's probably not something I'd get to for a while! :) Thanks again and best wishes, Chocmilk03 (talk) 00:21, 20 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Split it! Thanks again for improving the biography and adding all the information regarding the novel. :) --Rosiestep (talk) 00:54, 20 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Vernice Wineera

Hi, Wineera lived in Hawaii since 1960, hence I put the dates in the US style. The-Pope (talk) 16:27, 8 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@The-Pope, hiya, thanks for updating her page. I don't have any issues if you want to change the style, but you'll just need to update the page template at the top which is currently 'Use dmy dates'.
(I think there's valid arguments for either US or NZ style. As you say she had close ties to the US but a big part of her notability is that she was the first Māori woman to publish a book of poetry. And I'm in NZ myself so that's why I defaulted to the latter.) Cheers, Chocmilk03 (talk) 18:17, 8 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
